A Century of Faith on Pelham Street: Marsh Corner Community Church in Methuen, MA

Non-Denominational/Evangelical Church in Methuen, Massachusetts

Marsh Corner Community Church is a non-denominational church in west Methuen, MA, working to connect all generations to Jesus through a 10:30am blended worship service, full children's and student programs, small groups, and a worldwide missionary support network.

About Marsh Corner Community Church

A Church at the Corner, Now Across the Generations

On a quiet stretch of Pelham Street in west Methuen, Massachusetts, the people of Marsh Corner Community Church gather each Sunday around the same conviction that has shaped this congregation since a snow-blown December morning in 1922: every generation needs Jesus, and the church exists to bring each one to Him. The motto on the front of the building is short and direct - Connecting All Generations to Jesus - and the life of the church is built to do exactly that, both within the walls at 317 Pelham Street and out into the surrounding neighborhoods.

Marsh Corner grew out of a Sunday School that first met in the old Marsh Corner Schoolhouse in 1914, organized in 1918 as the Marsh Corner Union Sunday School Society, and formally constituted as Marsh Corner Community Church on January 1, 1923. A century later, the church has celebrated its 100th anniversary, expanded its buildings several times, and sent missionaries across the globe - all while remaining a community church in the plain sense of the word. New faces and longtime members are welcomed the same way, with the same words: Come by soon. We look forward to meeting you face to face.

Sundays at Marsh Corner

A Sunday at Marsh Corner has a familiar rhythm that begins well before the worship service begins. Sunday School for all ages starts at 9:00 a.m., with adults in the church library, teens in the Senior High Room, and children from kindergarten through sixth grade in the Children's Ministry Center. The program continues year-round, with a few weeks off during summer and around major holidays, and uses Bible stories, singing, and crafts to teach the Scriptures.

At 10:00 a.m., the doors open for Fellowship Time, when coffee, tea, and snacks are served and newcomers find a natural way to meet people. The main Worship Service begins at 10:30 a.m. and lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes. Services are a blend of traditional and contemporary, with singing, Scripture reading, a time of giving, and a message from the Bible. Visitors are invited to come as they are - dressed up or dressed down. The services are also livestreamed on the MCCC YouTube channel for those who cannot attend in person.

The main door to the building faces the parking lot. The walk is the center walkway, and the Marsh Corner Community Church banner hangs above the entrance. Inside the sanctuary, pews face a stage and screen where the preaching team leads the congregation through expository series, often working straight through a book of the Bible. Recent and ongoing series walk through the Gospel of Mark with Pastor Jared Carline, while Pastor George Stephens has led series on the Old Testament prophets, the kings of Israel, Israel in captivity, the Gospel of Luke, the letter to Philemon, and Advent. A full sermon archive with downloadable notes goes back several years and is searchable by series, topic, scripture, and speaker.

Children at Marsh Corner: MarshKids

Marsh Corner takes seriously the call to welcome the youngest members of a family. Infants through preschoolers are cared for in the Nursery and Preschool Suite on the lower level of the main building, which the staff describes as a safe, loving place for the youngest ones to learn about God's love. The nursery is open during all regularly scheduled church services.

Children in kindergarten through sixth grade have their own dedicated space in the Children's Ministry Center - the original 1918 church building, redesigned in 1924 by Lawrence architect T. E. Martin and remodeled in 1977 for children's education. Sunday School here begins at 9:00 a.m., and during the 10:30 worship service, children are dismissed before the sermon to Children's Church in Room 107 for a lesson geared to their age.

On Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., September through May, the same space fills with the cheers and games of AWANA, the children's discipleship program. Sparks welcomes boys and girls in kindergarten through second grade, and Truth and Training (T&T) covers third through sixth. Older students in grades 7 through 12 can continue in Trek and Journey, an AWANA track designed for teens. Every volunteer who works with children or youth has completed the church's Children and Youth Worker's Orientation Class and a CORI background check, and at least two volunteers are present in every room.

Vacation Bible School is a highlight of the summer, with themes such as Mystery Island bringing Bible teaching, games, crafts, and snacks together for a week of fun. Recent MarshKids events also include the Grand Prix, Trunk or Treat, and Christmas Cookie Outreach.

Student Ministry for Teens

The student ministry at Marsh Corner works to nurture teens and their individual relationships with Jesus. Youth Group meets on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Evenings are typically divided into thirds: game time, lesson time, and small groups. The staff works hard to create an environment that challenges mature students while still feeling open to a friend visiting for the first time. Sunday mornings offer a separate student Sunday School at 9:00 a.m. in the main building's lower level, where teens study real-world topics through the lens of Scripture.

The student ministry calendar is full of one-off events that build relationships beyond Wednesday nights. Recent and upcoming events include tubing trips, the Deep Freeze weekend at Camp Berea in Hebron, New Hampshire, a spring midnighter with pizza and laser tag, hayride nights, and youth serve days in nearby communities. The Deep Freeze weekend in particular has become a yearly high point - a weekend of high-energy, snow-filled fun set against big teaching and lasting life change.

Young Adults

For young adults, Marsh Corner offers a ministry built around the idea of building into one another, connecting, and supporting each other as Jesus calls. Devotion and Prayer nights meet regularly at the church in Room 104, and social events - apple picking, group dinners, pumpkin carving in the Fellowship Hall - fill out the calendar. Elise and Conor Smith facilitate the ministry and welcome new faces by name. Email updates keep young adults in the loop on what's happening each week, and the gathering intentionally reaches across the typical Sunday morning routine.

Men's Ministry

The men's ministry exists to give men regular exposure to Scripture and encouragement to live by it. The backbone of the ministry is a weekly Bible study on Thursday mornings at 6:15 a.m. in the Welcome Lobby, currently working through the book of Exodus. The early hour is intentional - men grab a coffee, open a Bible, and dig in together before the day begins.

Beyond the weekly study, the men gather for a monthly Saturday gathering at 7:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. A breakfast prepared by Chef Jim typically anchors the conversation, and a suggested donation of five dollars covers the food. Pastors and guest speakers share a short word from Scripture, and the table is open to sons, grandsons, neighbors, and friends. Men's retreats, service projects, and special breakfasts round out the year.

Women's Ministry

The women's ministry aims to give women of all ages and stages a place to fall in love with the Lord and to create a daily desire to worship Him. A long-running Ladies Bible Study meets Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in Room 107, walking through books of the Bible and topics such as the Proverbs 31 woman, studied not as a checklist but as a portrait of godly character. The Gathering Table meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in Room 107 for an evening study around a shared meal, picking up a new book each season. A Ladies Breakfast each fall brings women from the teens through the senior saints together for fellowship and a look ahead at the year.

The women's ministry team - Elisha Baker, Krystal Diaz, Eunice Devers-Vicente, Joy Gallagher, and Amanda Smart - leads retreats at places like Camp Berea in New Hampshire and the Monadnock region, along with seasonal events such as the Ladies Princess Tea and a winter board party. Photo archives from these gatherings go back years.

Senior Saints

The Senior Saints group is the older generation of the Marsh church family. Lillian McGinty and Carol Rousseau lead the group, which gathers for special outings and events - recent meet-ups have brought them to Salisbury Beach pavilion for an afternoon together, and the calendar typically includes a late-summer gathering each year.

Small Groups

Small groups are the easiest doorway into real community at Marsh Corner. The groups meet on a biweekly basis to get to know each other better, pray for each other, study God's Word together, and share a meal. Several groups are currently meeting in Methuen and in Salem, New Hampshire, with days and times arranged by each leader. Group leaders include the Lewis family, the Norton family, the Stephens family, and the Diaz family, among others. Visitors and newcomers can sign up through the small groups page, and a group will be matched based on schedule and location.

Discipleship and the Design for Discipleship Series

Marsh Corner teaches that discipleship is the work of becoming a fully committed follower of Christ - learning to walk through the Bible and a discipleship resource with another believer who knows more than you do, challenging each other, learning from each other, and holding each other accountable. The church recommends the Design for Discipleship (DFD) series from NavPress as the discipleship resource it uses across ministries. The seven-book series can be picked up free of charge from the church office.

  • DFD 1 - what it means to accept God's love for you, keep Christ at the center of your life, and live in the power of the Spirit.
  • DFD 2 - being filled by the Spirit so that obedience, prayer, Bible study, fellowship, and witnessing become natural and meaningful.
  • DFD 3 - five vital aspects of living as a strong and mature disciple, including the promises of God and knowing God's will.
  • DFD 4 - the internal qualities and values that should drive a disciple's life.
  • DFD 5 - a disciple's perspective on God, His Word, the Holy Spirit, spiritual warfare, and Christ's return.
  • DFD 6 - growing as a disciple by sharing the blessings received from God.
  • DFD 7 - a study of 1 Thessalonians that teaches comprehensive analysis of a book of the Bible.

The church encourages members to work through the series in one-on-one pairs, in small groups, or individually, and the books are designed to spark the kinds of questions that move a Christian from hearer to disciple.

Baptism by Immersion

Marsh Corner practices baptism by immersion as one of the two ordinances Christ gave His church, the other being the Lord's Supper. Baptism is taught as a believer's step - a public, physical declaration by a person who has personally trusted Jesus as Savior. The church reads every New Testament instance of baptism as the baptism of an adult who has made a personal statement of faith, and so the practice at Marsh Corner is to baptize adult believers, not infants. Baptism does not solve the problem of sin; only faith in Jesus does. Immersion pictures death to self and sin, identified with His burial, and the hope of resurrection and everlasting life. Baptisms are typically held on Easter Sunday and at a summer beach baptism each year.

Becoming a Member: Connections Class

Membership at Marsh Corner follows two steps. The first is identification with Jesus Christ through faith and public baptism by immersion. The second is a commitment to the local church. To help new people understand what membership means, the elders offer the Connections Class, an eight-session series available on the MCCC YouTube channel. The class spells out the church's strategy, structure, beliefs, and view of salvation in Christ. A downloadable PDF of prompts and questions accompanies the videos. After completing the class, prospective members meet with the elders, fill out a membership application, and sit for a membership interview.

What Marsh Corner Believes

The doctrinal statement of Marsh Corner Community Church is rooted in a conviction that the Bible is the complete, inerrant, verbally-inspired Word of God and the church's ultimate authority for life and practice. The church confesses belief in one God existing in three Persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and in the absolute deity and perfect humanity of the Lord Jesus Christ: His virgin birth, His substitutionary death, His bodily resurrection, and His ascension into Heaven.

The church believes in the personal return of Christ for His church and His visible, glorious return with His church to set up His Kingdom, and in the deity and personality of the Holy Spirit, through whom believers are regenerated, convicted, baptized, indwelt, and empowered. The church also confesses belief in the reality and personality of Satan, the fall of man, and the necessity of the new birth through faith in Jesus Christ.

Marsh Corner teaches that Christ instituted two ordinances for the church: baptism by immersion and the Lord's Supper, which together commemorate Christ's death. Finally, the church believes in the bodily resurrection and eternal life of the righteous, and the bodily resurrection, judgment, and eternal punishment of the wicked.

Core Values: A Church That Revolves, Relies, Rejoices, Resolves, and Reaches

The congregation describes itself through six short phrases that have shaped the church's ministry for years.

Revolving on Christ. Rather than adding Jesus to a to-do list, the church makes Jesus the center from which every part of life and ministry radiates - affecting vision for the world, relationships among Christians, families, marriages, and the use of money.

Reliant on Scripture. The Bible informs daily living and addresses every area of human life. Marsh Corner teaches that Scripture speaks to those who do not yet know Jesus as well as to those who do, and is the church's ultimate authority and measure of truth.

Redeemed by Grace. No one is satisfactory to God on their own, and salvation is offered freely through what Jesus did. The church takes Jesus to where people are, in expectation of where Jesus will take them.

Rejoicing in Community. The Christian life is personal but never private. The church enjoys God together and enjoys the journey of faith alongside one another.

Resolved to Grow. Life with Jesus is a journey, not a destination. The longer believers walk with Him, the more they come to know Him and the more He reveals about Himself.

Reaching Others. The church reduces Jesus' commands to two: love God and love neighbor. Reaching all means going into the world to make disciples and sharing the powerful salvation from sin that Jesus offers freely to anyone who calls on Him.

Outreach: Local and World Missions

Marsh Corner takes the command to bring God's love beyond its walls seriously, both in its own backyard and across the globe.

Local ministry partners

  • Awana missionary to the Northeast - Doug Schoenheit, helping churches refocus on relational, scriptural, and experiential child discipleship.
  • Chosen People Ministries - Mitch Forman, a ministry that exists to pray for, evangelize, disciple, and serve Jewish people everywhere.
  • New Hope Correctional Ministry - Danny Croce, providing chaplain services to correctional facilities through spiritual care for inmates, staff, and the surrounding community.
  • Open Air Campaigners - the McKinley family, an evangelistic ministry preaching the Gospel and mobilizing the body of Christ, primarily through open-air outreach.
  • Pregnancy Care Center - a local resource that helps women know and understand all of their pregnancy options, with services that are free and confidential.

The church also runs its own outreach events in the community. Past and recurring outreaches include Christmas By Candlelight, Trunk or Treat, Vacation Bible School, the Christmas Cookie Outreach, the Marsh Grammar School Staff Breakfast, and 5 Day Clubs.

World mission support

Marsh Corner supports twelve missionary families serving across the globe. The church highlights one missionary family each month and circulates their prayer updates and newsletters.

  • Dino and Nanette Butler - serving in New Mexico with NAIM (North American Indigenous Ministries).
  • Jerry and Beth Crosby - serving in Oregon with InterAct.
  • Rich and Ann Hoyt - based in Illinois, serving the peoples of Chad, Africa with TEAM.
  • Josh and Abby Rattin - based in New Hampshire, serving the peoples of Uganda, Africa with Disciple the Nations.

  • Dylan and Maria Williford - serving with European Missionary Fellowship in Spain.

The church also sends short-term mission trips every other year, with the first one going in 2006 to Panama with a team of eighteen.

The Building and the Campus

The Marsh Corner campus tells the story of the church's growth in bricks and mortar. The original building - the 1914 schoolhouse at Marsh Corner - still stands and is now used as the Children's Ministry Center, with its entry portico, raised basement, and 1924 cornerstone a reminder of how the congregation first gathered. The cornerstone was set in a ceremony led by Alvan T. Fuller, Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, on May 4, 1924.

The current sanctuary and office wing were completed in 1968 under the leadership of Pastor Miles Gelatt, allowing the congregation to leave the cramped original building for a larger space. In 1977, the original schoolhouse was completely remodeled into a children's educational building, and the nursery facilities were expanded. An educational wing and fellowship hall followed in 1984, providing immediate space for youth and adult ministries. The late-1990s Building on Faith campaign raised more than $800,000 above regular offerings, allowing the church to finish the lower level of the educational wing with modern nursery, preschool, and youth facilities, add a new lobby and entrance area, install an elevator, and enlarge the office and administration center. The work was dedicated on June 11, 2000.

The sanctuary itself received a significant renovation in March 2022, refreshing the space where the 10:30 a.m. worship service meets. The whole campus sits on Pelham Street in west Methuen, with parking off the main entry walkway that is marked by the church banner.

Pastoral Leadership and the Year of Prayer

In 2026, the congregation called Rev. Jared Carline as its new senior pastor. Pastor Jared and his wife Emily, along with their children Noelle and Jameson, joined Marsh Corner and now share the preaching duties on Sunday mornings. The transition was significant enough that the elders called the entire congregation into a 2026 Year of Prayer, distributing a prayer outline for unified prayer across the church.

Senior pastor emeritus Rev. George Stephens (Pastor George) served the church from 2012 to 2025 and continues to preach. Pastor George is joined by his son, Pastor Jeremy Stephens, an associate pastor from 2013 to 2023, and the two record the popular Inside the Pastors' Study podcast together, available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and the Anchor.fm feed. The podcast features the director's cut on sermons, cultural application, ministry leader interviews, bad puns and dad jokes, coffee analysis, and church foyer conversations.

The leadership of the church also includes a board of elders adopted under the 2007 church constitution. The current elders are Luke Norton (Elder and Finance Team Chairman), Erik Tupper (Elder and Treasurer), and the deacons Andres Diaz and Josh Stephens. The Marsh Corner leadership team is supported by an office staff of Joy Gallagher (Administrative Assistant), Sue Martis (Bookkeeper), and Julie Tupper (Administrative Assistant).

A Century on Pelham Street

Marsh Corner Community Church has been part of the Methuen landscape for more than a century. From that first winter Sunday in 1922 when the pastor had to walk from the Junction because the electric cars would not run, to the Easter baptisms at the beach, the AWARADAIGN clubs on Wednesday nights, and the Thursday morning men's study in the Welcome Lobby, the church has continually renewed the same vision: bring every age group, from nursery to senior saints, into a real walk with Him. Visitors are invited to stop in for a cup of coffee at 10:00 a.m., stay for the 10:30 a.m. worship service, and discover for themselves why this community on Pelham Street has been gathering around Jesus for a hundred years.
