A Family-Style Church on San Jose Boulevard
Mandarin Lutheran Church sits on San Jose Boulevard in the Mandarin neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, where it has built a reputation as a casual, warm, and welcoming congregation. The church is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) within the Florida-Bahamas Synod, and it opens its doors to people of every background. Members and visitors are invited to gather each Sunday at 9:00 a.m. for worship, fed by the Word of God, and sent out to serve the world around them.
The congregation describes itself with five core values that shape everything from Sunday morning to weekly outreach. It is God Centered, trusting that all things are in God's hands; Relationship Driven, respecting the uniqueness of every person; Adaptable, ready to respond to a changing world without giving up its foundation; Compassionate, serving Christ by serving neighbors; and Ethical, living with transparency, integrity, and compassion. Those values flow from a single mission statement: "Living in God's grace, we Make disciples, Love our neighbors, and Care for the world."
Sunday Morning at 9:00 a.m.
Worship is held each Sunday at 9:00 a.m. at 11900 San Jose Boulevard, and the atmosphere is intentionally relaxed. The church encourages first-time visitors to come as they are, in a setting that feels more like family than a formal sanctuary. For those who cannot attend in person, the service is livestreamed each Sunday morning on the congregation's Facebook page.
Worship is Christ-centered and blends traditional and contemporary music. Pastoral leadership is shared with the people of the congregation, and lay assistants serve as lectors, greeters, ushers, and acolytes. Music is led by the congregation's long-time keyboardist Roger Feingold, who has anchored every service for the past fifteen years and began studying piano in Boston at the age of six. Today he is a Jacksonville native who has taught music since the age of sixteen and brings a deep family connection to his work, including a grandson named Jackson.
Children are welcome in worship and are also invited forward each week for a children's time with the pastor. After the service, the building stays busy: Sunday School for younger children begins at 10:15 a.m., following the Holy Moly curriculum, and Teen Sunday School gathers at the same time to explore Scripture alongside current events and culture. Both programs run from August through May.
A Multi-Voice Music Program
Music is one of the most distinctive parts of life at Mandarin Lutheran. Three ensembles carry the ministry, and each one welcomes new members without auditions.
The MLC Choir praises God through more traditional arrangements of songs and hymns. Reading music is helpful but not required, and the group rehearses each Monday evening at 7:15 p.m. J.C. & the Sonshine Band, the congregation's guitar group, rehearses every Monday at 6:30 p.m. and draws on traditional hymns, country and folk Christian favorites, and more contemporary praise songs played with basic chords. Skill levels range from novice to experienced, and everyone is welcome. The MLC Bell Choir rehearses seasonally, immediately following Sunday worship, and prepares music for special services. Sue Brown coordinates the music ministries and is the contact for anyone interested in joining any of the three groups.
The Baby Pantry at the Heart of Outreach
Perhaps the most visible expression of the church's call to love its neighbors is the MLC Baby Pantry, which supplies local families with baby care items at no cost. Diapers, wipes, bath needs, rash cream, ointments, and gently used clothing are distributed on the first and third Sunday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to noon, on a first-come, first-serve basis. Families are asked to bring proof of residency and proof that the child is theirs or in their care; need is taken on the honor system, and no proof of income is required.
The Baby Pantry focuses on items that families cannot purchase using WIC or EBT benefits, and it points visitors in need of financial help, formula, food, pregnancy testing, or other prenatal services to a network of local partners. Those partners include Lutheran Social Services, the Mandarin Food Bank, Jewish Family and Community Services, United Community Outreach Ministry, Cribs for Kids, First Coast Women's Services, the Early Learning Coalition of Jacksonville, WIC Florida, the Mandarin Presbyterian Clothes Closet, Baby Luv, the Inn Ministry, the United Way of Northeast Florida, the NE Florida Community Action Agency, and Downtown Ecumenical Services. Donations of diapers, wipes, and other supplies can be dropped off at the church Monday through Thursday between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and pick-ups can be arranged by phone or email.
Hands-On Community Service
Beyond the Baby Pantry, the church runs several other outreach teams that turn faith into action. The Ongoing Collections Team coordinates year-round drives for food for the Mandarin Food Bank, aluminum can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, Boxtops for Education, pet supplies for Ana's Angels, bottle caps, and grocery bags for the Spirit of Life Food Pantry. The Special Collections Team organizes seasonal efforts such as the annual school supply drive in July and August, Thanksgiving boxes for the Mandarin Food Bank, the Christmas Giving Tree, the Lutheran Social Services Backpack Food Program, Foster Closet support, and veterans and military drives.
The Homeless Care Team works independently and with local agencies to provide items and volunteers for the homeless and displaced populations of Jacksonville, including assembling care bags. The Sit 'N Stitch Team knits, crochets, and sews prayer shawls, baby blankets, quilts, pillowcases, stuffed dolls, quiet-time Communion play sets, and banners, supporting charities that range from Palms West Children's Hospital NICU and Project Linus to Dolls of Hope International and local safehouse sites. The Gleaning Team partners with the Society of St. Andrew to pick leftover produce from recently harvested fields, and in 2019 and 2020 alone MLC participants gleaned more than 6,000 pounds of potatoes, beans, citrus, corn, and broccoli for Waste Not Want Not of OP and the Mandarin Food Bank.
The church's Community Partnerships also include One Cop, the Mandarin Food Bank, the Society of St. Andrew Gleaning network, and Scout Troop 101, which calls the church home.
Growing in Faith Together
Faith formation at Mandarin Lutheran is designed to span the generations. Children's Sunday School uses the Holy Moly curriculum, and the weekly children's time with the pastor keeps younger kids connected to the worship service. Teen Sunday School is a discussion-based class that pairs Scripture with the realities young people are facing. Every three years the ELCA gathers senior high youth for a week of service, worship, and fellowship with 30,000 other young Lutherans, and the next major ELCA Youth Gathering is on the church's radar as a marquee formation event.
Adults have their own rhythms of study and fellowship, including the music ensembles that double as small-group communities, the Sit 'N Stitch gatherings, and the church's many service teams.
What the Church Believes
Mandarin Lutheran teaches the historic Lutheran understanding of the Christian faith. Lutherans are Christians who hold that the Holy Scriptures reveal Jesus Christ as the core and foundation of the faith. The church teaches that no person can be made acceptable to God on the basis of their own good works, and that forgiveness of sin, right standing with God, and eternal life come only as a loving gift of God through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. That gift is received by those whom the Holy Spirit has gifted to believe and trust in Christ.
Pastoral Leadership and Visiting
The congregation is currently served by Pastor Ross Worch. Pastor Ross first joined Mandarin Lutheran as an interim pastor in 2024 and became the church's pastor in 2025. A native of Groveport, Ohio, he graduated from Ohio State University, served as a commissioned officer in the Army, earned a master's degree in Human Resources Management from Pepperdine University, and later answered a call to ministry at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, where he graduated and was ordained in 1998 with a Master of Divinity. He has previously served congregations in Branson, Missouri; Belleville, Texas; Gallipolis, Ohio; Camdenton, Missouri; Hot Springs Village and Hot Springs, Arkansas; and two interim appointments in Florida.
Visitors to 11900 San Jose Boulevard will find the church office open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the phone line at 904-268-4591 and email at office@mandarinlutheran.org. Sunday School runs from August through May, the Baby Pantry opens on the first and third Sundays of each month, and music ensembles rehearse on Monday evenings. Giving is available online through Tithe.ly, the congregation can be supported through Amazon Smile, and a sermon archive is kept on the church's Facebook page. Mandarin Lutheran Church invites anyone seeking an ELCA Lutheran home in Jacksonville to come as you are, join a service at 9:00 a.m., and find a place at the table.
