Lyndon Christian Church has stood on LaGrange Road in the heart of the Lyndon neighborhood of eastern Louisville since 1954, set right next to Robsion Park and within minutes of Hurstbourne Parkway, Westport Road, and I-264. Its mission is captured in a single line that runs across its materials: "Helping People Find Hope & Restoration in Jesus." An independent Christian church with roots in the Restoration Movement, Lyndon Christian Church teaches the Bible as its sole authority and aims to be a Bible-teaching home for families across the 40222 and 40242 zip codes, including the nearby communities of Hurstbourne, Westport, and St. Matthews.
Rooted in the Restoration Movement, Independent Today
Lyndon Christian Church is, in its own words, "an independent Christian Church" that draws its heritage from the Restoration Movement and shares common values and beliefs among the brotherhood of Christian Churches. The church is unambiguous about what it is and is not: "We are not affiliated with any denomination. We are not the only Christians, but we are Christians only." That independence is a matter of principle, not of distance. The church belongs to a wider fellowship of Restoration Movement congregations that share its convictions, but it does not answer to any national denominational body.
Inside its own walls, the church describes itself as elder-led, staff-driven, and volunteer-powered. A team of elders provides spiritual oversight, vision, and guidance; a small paid staff runs day-to-day operations; and every ministry program at the church, from Sunday School classes to the food pantry, is carried out by volunteers.
A Sunday Morning at Lyndon Christian
The Sunday rhythm at Lyndon Christian Church is built around two morning gatherings. Sunday School meets at 10 a.m. in a class-style setting where participants read the Bible together and talk through how it applies to their personal lives. Classes are offered for every age, from nursery through adult, so the whole family can learn at the same hour.
At 11 a.m., the congregation gathers for the weekly worship service. The service opens with a time of contemporary praise songs led by Music Director Caroline Johnson. The Lord's Supper is observed every Sunday as a reminder of Christ's redemptive work on the cross, followed by a biblical message that the church works hard to keep rooted in Scripture and relevant to daily life.
There is no dress code. Visitors are invited to wear whatever they would normally wear in a public setting. During the 11 a.m. worship hour, the nursery remains available for the youngest children, and a separate Children's Church is offered for elementary-age students. Visitors who have filled out the church's personalized-experience form online are welcomed by name and helped to find their way around.
Children and Youth: From Nursery Through High School
Children's ministry at Lyndon Christian Church is structured around four age groups that meet during the 10 a.m. Sunday School hour:
- Nursery - birth through 2 years old
- Preschool - 2-year-olds through 4-year-olds
- Elementary - kindergarten through 5th grade
- Youth - middle school and high school
The nursery stays open during the 11 a.m. worship service, and Children's Church is offered for elementary-age students during that hour as well. The aim is the same one that shapes the rest of the church: to teach the Bible plainly and let it speak into the everyday lives of the next generation. A baptistry is kept ready every Sunday for anyone ready to take that step of faith, and the church offers a free copy of Baptism According to Scripture by Bobby Harrington to anyone who wants to study baptism in more depth.
Wednesday Small Groups
Small groups meet at the church on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. These gatherings carry the Bible teaching of Sunday morning into a smaller, more conversational setting, a place where members can ask harder questions, share what is going on in their lives, and pray for one another. Small groups are a regular part of the church's rhythm and an open door for anyone wanting to get connected beyond Sunday morning.
The Food Pantry: A Monthly Outreach
On the third Friday of every month from 10 a.m. until noon, Lyndon Christian Church opens its food pantry to neighbors in need. Meat and fresh fruit are available while supplies last. The pantry accepts donations of ground beef, sausage, bacon, chicken breast, fruit cups or canned fruit, applesauce, paper products, and fresh fruit, with fresh fruit accepted on the Wednesday or Thursday before distribution only. Anyone wanting more information can call the church office.
Mission Partners Across Louisville and Beyond
Lyndon Christian supports a network of mission partners who share its commitment to the gospel and to serving people in practical ways. The list includes Crossroads Missions, In His Name Ministry, Kentuckiana Christian Mission, GO Ministries, B-Side U for Life, White Mills Christian Camp, Lifeline (a pregnancy resource center), and Pinehaven. These partnerships put the church's "Be the Bridge" value into action, working alongside other ministries to lead people to Christ in Louisville and beyond.
What Lyndon Christian Church Believes
The Statement of Faith lays out the church's convictions in detail, with the Scripture references behind each one.
Lyndon Christian teaches that there is one God who exists as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, sharing one essence. God created the visible and invisible universe, and his power and glory are self-evident through what he has made. He is good, sovereign, loving, and just, and he is unbounded by time or space.
Human beings are created by God in his image. The church teaches that life begins at conception, that all people are created with only two distinct gender categories, male and female, and that biblical marriage is the union of one man and one woman. Each person is made up of body, soul, and spirit, and each person also falls into sin, which the Bible defines as lawlessness. Sin corrupts every part of a person and makes a Savior necessary.
Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. He died on the cross as the atonement for sin, paid the penalty for sin, and rose again from the grave, a resurrection that inaugurated his kingdom and proved he was God. Salvation is available to all and comes only through faith in Jesus Christ. Faith at Lyndon Christian is understood as both intellectual assent (agreeing that the claims about Jesus are true) and reliant trust (living as though you agree that those claims are true). Reliant trust expresses itself in repentance, verbal confession, baptism, and perseverance in the faith.
Baptism is a defining mark of the church. Lyndon Christian teaches that baptism is essential for salvation, is administered by full immersion, and is reserved for those old enough to consciously put their faith in Christ; the church does not baptize infants. The church teaches that water baptism and Spirit baptism are one and the same event, and that the regeneration of a person's spirit occurs in the moment of baptism.
The Holy Spirit is God. Christians receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit at baptism, and the Spirit inspired the authors of Scripture. Before conversion, the Spirit convicts sinners to repent. During conversion, the Spirit regenerates the new creation in baptism. After conversion, the Spirit sanctifies believers and gives them gifts to serve others.
The Bible is the inspired Word of God and the sole authority for all matters of faith and doctrine.
Four Core Values
Alongside its Statement of Faith, the church identifies four core values that shape its daily life together.
Serve Where You're Called. Every believer has a unique calling from God. Lyndon Christian Church works to equip people to discover and use that calling, their personality, skills, abilities, and opportunities, in service to God's kingdom.
Be the Bridge. The church understands its mission as standing in the gap between humanity and God, united in the sole task of leading people to Christ by sharing the gospel. The church prepares people to take the message of the healing power of Jesus Christ out into the community around Lyndon and across Louisville.
Live Differently. The church is a people set apart by the way they live. Lyndon Christian aims to train disciples who live in accordance with the moral teaching of Scripture and who grow into maturity as followers of Jesus.
Love the Family. The church is God's family. Members are called to love one another the way a tight-knit family does, and the church works to be a catalyst for the deep, meaningful relationships that grow through genuine fellowship.
Leadership: Elders and Staff
Lyndon Christian Church is led by Senior Minister Evan Hardwick, who also serves as the primary writer of the church's Bible teaching articles. Caroline Johnson serves as Music Director. The board of elders, Mark Carter, Lex Stewart, and Ted Brumleve, provides the spiritual oversight, vision, and guidance that shape the church's direction. Together, the staff and elders oversee a ministry team made up entirely of volunteers who carry out every program, from Sunday School to the food pantry.
Giving, Sermons, and Staying Connected
There are three ways to give to Lyndon Christian Church. An offering box sits to the left of the sanctuary entrance for in-person giving on Sunday mornings. Online giving is available through PayPal, with options for one-time gifts or recurring auto-payments. Donations can also be mailed directly to the church at 8125 La Grange Rd., or sent through a bank's online bill-pay system.
Sermons are shared on the church's YouTube channel, where visitors can catch up on recent messages. A Google Calendar is available for service announcements, event reminders, and small-group scheduling.
For those who want to stay in touch between Sundays, the church sends text messages about worship services, schedule changes, weather-related closings, events, small groups, volunteer needs, prayer requests, pastoral follow-up, and giving reminders. Subscribers can opt in through a form online, a connect card at the church, or by texting the keyword to the church's number, and can opt out at any time by replying STOP.
