Sunday Morning Rhythm

The Ruth Beale Circle
The Ruth Beale Circle is Lyndale's women's missions group, and it has its own monthly rhythm. Members meet on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 PM to talk about missions at home and abroad, to pray, and to plan hands-on projects. The Circle is the driving force behind the church's annual Back-to-School Supplies Drive, collecting notebooks, pencils, crayons, and other basics and delivering them to a local elementary school so that children can start the year prepared. It is one of the clearest examples at Lyndale of how a small group of people, meeting faithfully, can change the start of a school year for a lot of families.
The Little Yellow Blessing Box
Outside the church there is a small yellow Blessing Box that operates as a free, no-questions-asked food pantry for anyone in the neighborhood. It is open every day, and alongside the canned goods, dry staples, drinks, and snacks, there are flyers with information about local resources and support opportunities. There is also a prayer box tucked inside, so anyone who stops by can leave a prayer request and know they are being cared for in more than one way.
The Blessing Box is restocked daily by volunteers, and donations are easy: a few extra non-perishable items from the grocery store can be dropped in the plastic tub beside the church door. Monetary gifts can be designated to the Blessing Box fund online or by mail. The list of most-needed items includes canned fruits and vegetables, chicken, tuna, soups, pasta and sauce, crackers, cereal, boxed mac and cheese, instant potatoes, coffee, tea, and juices.
Changing Lives, One Sandwich at a Time
On the first weekend of every odd-numbered month - January, March, May, July, September, and November - the Changing Lives ministry turns the church into a sandwich-making operation. Volunteers gather on Friday evening at 6:00 PM to prepare more than 150 bagged lunches, then return on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM to pack them for delivery. The lunches go to four nearby shelters that serve women, children, families, and veterans who are staying there temporarily.
Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and the church keeps the time commitment light enough that busy schedules can still fit. The most-needed supplies for the lunches include salty snacks like small bags of chips or crackers, individually packaged cookies or Rice Krispie Treats, fruit cups or applesauce, and 2-liter bottles of soda. Free Community Dinners on the Second Friday
On the second Friday of each month from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, the church opens its doors for a free Community Dinner. The meal is open to anyone who needs a warm plate of food, a place to sit for a while, or simply a friendly face. There are no requirements, no paperwork, and no strings attached. Members of the church prepare and serve the food alongside prayer partners who are available to pray with anyone who would like it, making the dinner both a literal and a spiritual offering to the neighborhood.
Pennies for Heaven
On the second Saturday of each month at 7:30 AM, the Pennies for Heaven ministry team meets at the church to assemble personal-hygiene bags and deliver them to people who are homeless and to neighbors in need around the area. Each bag carries basic items - a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, bar soap, disposable razors, washcloths, shampoo, and socks - along with the quiet message that the recipient matters and has not been forgotten.
Donations of hygiene items are welcome year-round, and volunteers can join the team on any second Saturday morning. Monetary gifts can be designated to Pennies for Heaven online.
Partnering with the Southminster Food Closet
Lyndale also partners with the Southminster Presbyterian Church's Food Closet, which serves more than 300 families a year. Members of Lyndale are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food in the baskets in the western foyer of the church building. The most-needed items at the Southminster Food Closet include canned vegetables, canned fruit, beans, soups and stews, canned chicken and tuna, pasta and sauce, rice, cereal, oatmeal, crackers, snacks, Hamburger and Tuna Helper, instant potatoes, boxed mac and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, baking mixes, pancake mix and syrup, coffee, tea, and juices. Personal hygiene items - from toothbrushes and toothpaste to shampoo, deodorant, razors, toilet paper, diapers, and feminine hygiene products - are accepted alongside the food.
Seasonal Ministries Around the Year
Three seasonal efforts round out the year at Lyndale. The Back-to-School Supplies Drive, organized by the Ruth Beale Circle each summer, gathers backpacks, composition books, sharpened pencils, crayons, dry-erase markers, highlighters, folders, scissors, glue sticks, hand sanitizer, tissues, disinfecting wipes, Ziplock bags, paper towels, and a list of grade-specific items for students at a nearby elementary school. Donations are dropped off in the Community Resource Room in the East Wing.
Beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving each year, the Lyndale Christmas Tree Lot opens on the church grounds. Selling Christmas trees is a way for the congregation to fund mission trips and support outreach projects in the community, across Virginia, and beyond. Buying a tree from the lot means more than taking home a piece of the season; it is one of the church's main fundraisers for the year.
Each Christmas, Lyndale also takes part in the WMU Christmas Store, partnering with the Chesterfield County School Social Worker office so that parents facing tight budgets can still put gifts under the tree for their children. The Thanksgiving season brings the CCHASM Thanksgiving Meal Program, in which the congregation assembles meal bags and contributes grocery gift cards for neighbors in need across Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, Hopewell, Petersburg, and Prince George.
WMU and HerMission
Lyndale is active in the Woman's Missionary Union and its Virginia expression, HerMission (formerly WMUV), which traces its roots in Virginia missions work back to 1874. Through WMU and HerMission, the church connects with a wider network of women and men engaged in missions discipleship, leadership development, and compassion ministries. The church participates in statewide events, retreats, and conferences through HerMission, and supports CrossRoads Camp in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, where campers and guests of all ages experience God through nature, worship, and fellowship in a Christ-centered setting.
Lyndale also takes part in the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions, an annual offering run jointly by the Baptist General Association of Virginia and WMUV. The offering supports missions and ministry across the Commonwealth. The Nannie Bland David Associational Local Missions Offering, gathered through the Middle District Baptist Association, supports community ministries, local outreach, and church planting across the region.
