Lyall Memorial Federated Church: A Millbrook Congregation Open to Every Christian

Non-Denominational/Evangelical Church in Millbrook, New York

An interdenominational federated congregation in the village of Millbrook, New York, known by the motto 'A Church whose only label is Christian and whose only head is Christ,' with a long-running Meals on Wheels program, food pantries, daily Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, a concert series, and Sunday worship led by the Reverend Thomas W. Fiet.

About Lyall Memorial Federated Church

A Church Whose Only Label Is Christian

On Maple Avenue in the village of Millbrook, in Dutchess County, a gray-shingled sanctuary has gathered neighbors for worship since 1927. Lyall Memorial Federated Church is known by its motto: "A Church whose only label is Christian and whose only head is Christ." The congregation welcomes visitors of every denomination, or none, and describes itself as an interdenominational community guided by the scriptures and centered on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The church's mission, in its own words, is "to know, love, and serve God in our worship, music, teaching, and fellowship and in caring for each other, our community, and the world." Outreach and pastoral care are part of daily life at Lyall. Nearly fourteen thousand people in twelve-step recovery cross its threshold each year through the church's home to Alcoholics Anonymous, while volunteers staff food pantries, deliver hot meals to homebound neighbors, and host a monthly community lunch.

Sunday Morning at the Sanctuary

Two distinct services shape Sunday at Lyall. A Quaker Meeting gathers in the church library at 9:00 AM; in summer months the meeting moves to the historic Nine Partners Meeting House. The main Worship Service follows at 10:25 AM in the sanctuary and is livestreamed by video and audio for members and friends joining from elsewhere. Worship is led by the Reverend Thomas W. Fiet with support from a Worship Committee, a Board of Spiritual Life, and a strong musical tradition that carries everything from hymns to choral concert works.

In the congregation's own words, "Through praise and worship, we come to understand God, others and ourselves. Through the witness of the Word, we come to understand and embrace our callings." Sunday bulletins pair traditional hymns with liturgical readings, and after worship parishioners have gathered for "Post Worship Chats," an informal discussion time that has been part of the rhythm at Lyall since 2015.

A Federated Heritage Since 1926

Lyall Memorial Federated Church was incorporated in 1926, and the sanctuary was dedicated the following year. Initially the congregation was formed as a federation of the Reformed Church in America, the United Methodist Church, and the Society of Friends, the three traditions whose roots still shape its life. Many members come from other denominations or none, and the church emphasizes that "one thing that we all claim to be is Christian." Three links on the church's online resources point visitors to the wider bodies: the United Methodist Church, the Reformed Church in America, and the New York Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends.

The church's name extends beyond its sanctuary walls. The historic Nine Partners Burial Ground is associated with Lyall, and the Superintendent of the Nine Partners Burial Ground Association is available through the parish office.

Music, Concerts, and Choir

Music is woven into nearly every corner of life at Lyall. A Junior Choir meets on Wednesday afternoons and an Adult Choir rehearses on Thursday evenings and Sunday evenings. The Music at Lyall concert series brings five free performances each season to Millbrook, with past guests including soprano Robin Clifford, the Larry Ham Trio, jazz bassist and vocalist Nicki Parrott, the Lotus Chamber Music Collective, and pianist Maryna Kysla. Each concert is followed by a reception where audiences can meet the performers.

A Community Festival Choir presents several concerts a year, often featuring works by local composer Daniel Michael Koch, who set a Nativity Song Cycle for the church and has conducted performances of choral works from Schubert's Mass in G to Vivaldi's Gloria. A video archive of past concerts is available online, and Sunday worship itself is carried live each week.

Christian Education Across the Lifespan

Christian Education at Lyall is described by the church as "positive, affirming, and integrated with the church community," with the goal of helping every age learn to read the Bible, the world, their neighbor, and themselves. Nursery care is offered for infants and toddlers during Sunday morning worship. Children ages 3 to 7 gather around the Bible using a semi-Montessori approach rooted in the work of Sonja Stewart and Jerome Berryman, while children ages 8 to 13 explore biblical narratives alongside matters of worldview, justice, peace, and community. Youth ages 14 and older may enter a confirmation experience of about three months with the pastor and trusted sponsors, taking up mature themes such as the integration of science and faith, the reality of human suffering alongside a good God, and the responsible reading of scripture.

Adults at Lyall can join inductive Bible reflection groups, community-building seminars, grief groups, and "works-in-progress gatherings." A Spanish-language brochure for the children's program is available from the church office. Church Re-Imagined, an intergenerational Saturday program of activity-based exploration followed by a child-friendly worship celebration and a shared meal of pizza, salad, and ice cream sundaes, is also part of Lyall's family ministry when in session.

Pastoral Care, Recovery, and Bible Study

Lyall's pastoral care ministry includes Stephen Ministers, trained lay listeners who meet with someone going through a difficult life passage once a week for up to a year. To learn more about Stephen Ministry, callers are encouraged to reach out to the pastor. Grief Circles are arranged on request, gathering participants to name and speak to the transitions that come with loss and, as Lyall puts it, "to find our way to a more profound integration and gratitude."

Recovery at Lyall is a centerpiece of the church's hospitality. Alcoholics Anonymous meets in the Gathering Room of the new wing every day of the week. The congregation frames that work broadly: "Here at Lyall, we speak the language of recovery applying it to all of us and to all areas of our lives." Crisis calls are referred to the Dutchess Stabilization Center, open twenty-four hours, seven days a week, three hundred sixty-five days a year, for free professional help with mental health and substance concerns.

Bible Study is offered in regular sessions led by Pastor Thom and Jim Demus, meeting both in the Sanctuary and by livestream. The Monday morning and Wednesday evening rhythms have drawn newcomers who want to explore the texts with others. Prayer requests may also be shared directly with the pastor.

Food, Meals, and Outreach in Millbrook

Meals on Wheels Millbrook, sponsored through Lyall, delivers meals three days a week to elderly and homebound residents of the Town of Washington and the Village of Millbrook, with service extended to neighboring areas when possible. Short-term help is also available for those recovering at home from surgery or hospice care. Marona's Market in Millbrook contributes bread and baked goods to the program's weekly preparation.

Two food pantries serve neighbors in need. Food For Folks, the church's short-term emergency pantry, is available by appointment. First Harvest Pantry runs Tuesday mornings from 8:30 to 10:00 AM during the growing season, May through October, offering fresh produce in the Gathering Room from a partnership with Stonewood Farm. Lyall Lunch, a community meal of homemade soup, sandwich, and dessert, is held on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, with all welcome and a freewill offering appreciated.

An Anti-Racist Study Group meets on Mondays at 12:30 PM on Zoom, reading books chosen to deepen understanding of the lived experience of immigrants and others at the margins of U.S. society. Dinner and Homework Help, an afterschool program held on Wednesdays, pairs a hot meal with tutoring and community for local students.

The Pastor and the Building

The Reverend Thomas W. Fiet is in his second decade of ministry at Lyall, having joined in January 2015. A native of Fruitland Township near Lake Michigan and a graduate of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, he holds a Master of Divinity from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, where he also completed a fellowship at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam and interned at The English Reformed Church in the city center. Pastor Thom has served congregations in California (the Crystal Cathedral), at Hyde Park, and at Pleasant Plains Presbyterian Church. He has written: "I believe Jesus to be the Christ, the Lord, The Messiah of God. But the more I consider his life, the stranger and more confounding he becomes."

Pastor Thom works alongside a Board of Trustees chaired by Bob Reid, with Cat Greenstreet as Church Council President, and a Board of Spiritual Life whose members include Kristen Reid, Linda Wiltse, Nick Hudak, Marisa Strange, Sue Hennelly, Emily Herberich, Linda Goodchild, Judy Lyons, and Cat Greenstreet. The Boards oversee committees for Budget and Finance, Personnel, Bible Study, Christian Education, Lyall Lunch, Lyall Music, Worship, and Worship Participants.

The Lyall sanctuary at 30 Maple Avenue also hosts weddings in a traditional setting, and the building is available to rent to individuals and non-profit organizations, subject to review by the Board of Trustees. A Sunday service archive, a Wednesday evening Bible Study archive, and a video archive of concerts are all available online for those who want to get a feel for Lyall before visiting.
