A Traditional Church on Liberty Hill Road
A traditional Methodist congregation on Liberty Hill Road in Greer, South Carolina, Liberty Hill United Methodist Church has anchored its corner of Greenville County since 1849. The present sanctuary was built in 1956, with members later adding a Family Life Center in 1982 and a Dining Hall in 2004. The congregation describes itself as warm and caring, with a steady rhythm of Sunday worship, intergenerational Sunday School, and outreach that reaches from Greer to other countries. John 3:16-17 frames the church's welcome: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Sundays at Liberty Hill
Sunday mornings follow a simple, family-friendly schedule. Sunday School for all ages meets at 10:00 a.m., and the worship service begins at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary. The service is also carried live on Facebook for those who cannot attend in person, and recordings of past messages are kept on Facebook. Reverend Nelson L. Stokes Jr. pastors the church, and a daily devotional from The Upper Room is offered to anyone who wants to grow in faith between Sundays.
Outreach Across the Upstate and Beyond
Outreach is the heartbeat of the congregation's life. Liberty Hill supports Salkehatchie, a Methodist youth program that brings teens from across South Carolina together for week-long home repair camps. Participants learn carpentry, roofing, plumbing, flooring, and drywall while sharing in evening worship with their crews. Every six weeks on Mondays, members help distribute food through God's Pantry, a feeding mission whose regional hub is based out of Sharon United Methodist Church, with the distribution center located in Fountain Inn, South Carolina. Members help stock shelves and pack boxes for families in need.
The church also hosts a three-day Vacation Bible School for all ages, with classes, crafts, music, and skits for children, youth, and adults. Two additional ongoing missions round out the congregation's giving: a Food Barrel Collection that keeps the pantry stocked year-round, and Victor Sunday, a periodic offering that supports ministry beyond the church walls.
A Building Shaped by Generations
Today's campus reflects more than 175 years of growth on Liberty Hill Road. The Family Life Center, added in 1982, and the Dining Hall, built in 2004, give the church room for Sunday School classes, Vacation Bible School, fellowship meals, an annual Craft Fair, and trunk-or-treat gatherings that mark the year.
Welcome and Mission
The congregation's mission statement centers on being fully devoted to Jesus by opening its arms to those seeking truth and showing God's love through works of charity. The congregation's invitation is simply put: "We would love to greet you and share with you our love for Jesus Christ and for you, our neighbor."
