Leading to Christ, Cultivating Disciples
Largo Community Church has called itself the "Church of Friendship and Joy, where Christ is honored and people are loved" for more than five decades. The three letters in the church's name, LCC, capture its heartbeat: a non-denominational, Christ-centered congregation dedicated to Leading people to Christ and Cultivating Disciples who make disciples. From its 55-acre campus at 1701 Enterprise Road in Mitchellville, Maryland, the church extends the same welcome to first-time guests and longtime members alike. Some come exploring faith for the first time, others looking for a new church home, and still others reconnecting after time away.
Sunday Mornings on Enterprise Road
Worship at LCC happens at 9:00 and 11:00 AM, with both services available in person and online. On the fifth Sunday of any month, the two congregations combine into a single joint worship service at 10:00 AM so that everyone can fellowship together, and Sunday School is paused that day. Each service blends contemporary and traditional music, prayer, and theologically grounded teaching that the church describes as revealing Jesus' love and redeeming power.
Visitors are greeted by ushers and greeters ready to answer questions and point them to restrooms, classrooms, or the sanctuary. Dress is come-as-you-are: some attend in suits, others in jeans. Between the two Sunday services, at 10:15 AM, the Fellowship Hall opens for coffee and refreshments, and the Hospitality Ministry serves every Sunday except the fifth.
Adult Bible Study meets alongside the services at 9:00 and 11:00 AM, both in person and online, and the church runs two adult classes at each hour. Children and youth have their own programs during the worship hours. Small groups meet throughout the week, in person and online, with active groups for men, women, youth, and married couples.
Half a Century on the Same Campus
LCC was founded in 1972 when Dr. H. Jack Morris and his wife, Corin Morris, felt called to plant a Bible-teaching, Spirit-led church in the growing Largo area. Dr. Morris's vision was for a "church without walls," a welcoming place where people from every background could worship freely, without denominational barriers, and where the love of Christ would transcend differences. What began as a small group of believers gathering in the multipurpose room of Largo High School soon outgrew the space.
Through prayer and perseverance, the congregation secured a permanent home, the present 55-acre Mitchellville campus, with a chapel, a 700-seat sanctuary, and a 40,000-square-foot Christian Education and Banquet Center. Dr. Morris shepherded LCC for 53 years before retiring. The congregation then affirmed Pastor Dwayne B. Hooper, Sr. as its new Senior Pastor. Pastor Hooper had joined the staff in 2001 and served as Executive Minister for more than two decades under Dr. Morris's mentorship, giving him deep roots in the church's identity and rhythm.
What LCC Believes
Largo Community Church embraces the historic Christian faith and is Christ-centered in worship and Bible-based in teaching. Its doctrinal statements cover six core convictions: the Bible is the inspired, authoritative, and only infallible Word of God; the Holy Spirit brings sinners to Christ, enables holy living, and empowers believers to witness; there is one God eternally existent in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; the sacrament of baptism marks the beginning of the Christian life, while Holy Communion signifies its continuation; Jesus Christ is the Son of God, born of the virgin Mary; and the Church is the people of God in fellowship, worship, and ministry.
Worship Through Music, Dance, and Prayer
The Corporate Worship Ministries lead the congregation in celebrating God's goodness through music, arts, prayer, Scripture, and preaching. The Music Ministry is composed of vocal ensembles and instrumentalists who lead worship each Sunday, with Ned Lewis serving as Interim Director of Music and Cheryl Francis at the piano for the Men's Fellowship Ensemble and the Contemporary Praise Team. The Liturgical Dance Ministry, led by Lauren Gwira, uses expressive movement to glorify God during special services and church events, with adult rehearsals on Tuesdays from 6:00 to 7:00 PM and children's rehearsals from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.
Other worship-support ministries include the Communion Altar Ministry, which prepares the elements for the Lord's Supper on the first Sunday of each month and on Good Friday; the Greeters, Ushers, and Hospitality teams who welcome and serve the congregation each week; the Security team; and the Video team. A team of trained prayer counselors is available after each service to pray with anyone who wants it.
Sunday School, Small Groups, and Bible Study
Discipleship is at the heart of LCC's name, and the Discipleship and Christian Education ministries put it into practice every week. Sunday School, led by Christian Education Director Karyn Baines, is rooted in 1 Peter 3:18 and offers age-appropriate, Bible-based teaching for children, while also giving adults their own classes. The 9:00 AM adult class, led by Herman Hines, and the 11:00 AM adult class, led by Reggie Gwira and Leslie Harding, are offered both in person and online.
The UnChurched Youth Ministry provides a separate space for students in 6th through 12th grade to build fellowship, ask honest questions about real-life topics, and grow spiritually. It is led by Brian Murray, AJ Brown, Lauren and Tayvon Gwira, Maya Townsend, Krystina Cox, Perfect Sare, and Donovan and Paul Teel. Small groups of various shapes and sizes meet throughout the week, both on campus and in homes, covering topics from marriage enrichment to financial stewardship.
Marriage, Divorce Care, and Baby Dedication
The Family and Life Enrichment ministries walk alongside members through every season. A premarital course prepares engaged couples for marriage. Baptism, new member classes, and baby dedication services mark important milestones in the life of a family. Financial Peace University helps individuals and families take practical steps toward healthier finances.
For those navigating harder seasons, the Divorce Care Ministry, led by Robert Bradley, offers 13-week classes on Sunday afternoons that combine guided sessions with fellowship, encouragement, and hope.
From the Food Pantry to Honduras
Outreach at LCC is built on caring relationships and practical support. The Food Pantry Ministry, led by Janie Phelps, prepares and distributes bags of food to both the congregation and surrounding neighbors in need. The Tutoring Ministry supports students academically, while the Prison Ministry, led by Reginald Washington, partners with the chaplain at the Prince George's County Correctional Center to provide Bible studies, Bible distribution, and weekly Christian worship services on Mondays and Wednesdays.
The Troop Outreach, led by Linda Howard, gathers snacks and personal comfort items for families of wounded service members staying at the Fisher House at Joint Base Andrews. Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops meet on campus, and a drive-thru prayer station offers prayer to anyone who pulls up.
The Medical Short-Term Missions Ministry sends teams to La Paz, Honduras, in partnership with Honduras Compassion Partners. Led by Beverly Taylor, the teams train medical professionals, first responders, and lay people while also building water wells (pilas), latrines, and feeding children in the community.
Monthly Breakfasts and a First Thursday Prayer Gathering
The Men's Fellowship, led by Pastor Hooper and Greg Townsend, gathers on the third Saturday of each month at 9:00 AM for a hearty breakfast, an inspirational message, and godly fellowship, and hosts an annual retreat. The Women's Fellowship, led by Kimberly Logan and Glenda Baines, follows a Titus 2 model of older and younger women together and meets on the fourth Saturday at 9:00 AM, also with a yearly retreat. On the first Thursday of each month, the congregation gathers at 7:00 PM for Prayer and Fasting in the Banquet Hall, with a Zoom option for those who cannot attend in person.
A 55-Acre Campus with Room to Grow
The Mitchellville campus offers far more than worship space. The 700-seat sanctuary is flanked by a chapel, a Christian Education wing, and the 40,000-square-foot Christian Education and Banquet Center. The Banquet Hall is rented out for wedding receptions, baby and bridal showers, family reunions, anniversaries, conferences, seminars, birthday celebrations, and holiday parties. Section A holds up to 100 guests without its built-in dance floor and 80 with it; Section B seats up to 140; the two sections together hold up to 232 without the dance floor, 200 with it, or 300 in theater-style seating.
"In A Minute Café," the church's in-house catering service, customizes menus and décor for each event. Rentals run four hours and include wireless microphones, surround sound, a large-screen television, on-site support, security, and janitorial service. Classrooms are also available to rent. The facility features ample parking and a covered walkway that meets ADA accessibility requirements.
Largo Community Ministries
Beyond the church itself, the campus is home to Largo Community Ministries (LCM), a Christ-centered before- and after-school program that serves Mitchellville families during the academic year from August through June. LCM provides a licensed, quality environment where staff uphold Christian values and biblical truths while planning daily activities, preparing learning materials, and helping students with homework. The program reflects the same outreach and discipleship mission that shapes the rest of the church's work, extending LCC's care into the lives of working families and their children during the school week.
