A church on the shores of Lake Osborne
Lake Osborne Church gathers at the corner of Sunset Drive and Sixth Avenue South in Lake Worth Beach, on the western edge of Palm Beach County. The sanctuary, classrooms, and fellowship hall sit a short drive from the lake itself, and the congregation describes its location as a specific spot on the shores of Lake Osborne. It is a Presbyterian community affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), and the gospel of reconciliation through Jesus Christ is the message that has shaped its identity since the day it was constituted as a church.
A motto and a theology of reconciliation
The church's motto comes from 2 Corinthians 5:21: "In Christ, God is reconciling the world to himself, not counting our sins against us… for Jesus was made sin, who knew no sin, that we might become the righteousness of God." Members describe themselves as sinners who believe that in Jesus Christ, God lived the perfect life they failed to live. They believe he then died the atoning death for sin which they deserved, and that he rose from the dead three days later, breaking the curse of sin and death. Through him, all who trust are brought back into right standing with God, embracing the forgiveness of sins and a newness of life.
As a part of the worldwide family of Christ followers, the congregation takes a Presbyterian shape. Its leaders are quick to say that members are followers of Jesus Christ before they are Presbyterians, and that anyone who loves Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, or anyone curious about who he is, is welcome.
Sunday worship and Sunday school
Gathering on the first day of the week has been a Christian custom since the resurrection of Christ. Lake Osborne Church follows that pattern. Worship is expressed through singing, praying, reading and teaching from the Scriptures, and the celebration of the Lord's Supper, a ritual in which bread and either wine or juice are shared as a reminder of the body and blood of Jesus given for salvation.
Sunday mornings begin with Sunday School at 9:00 am. The adult class is open, and children are welcome to attend alongside their parents. At 10:00 am, coffee and refreshments are served in the sanctuary lobby, giving visitors a chance to settle in before the service. Worship begins at 10:30 am in the sanctuary and runs 60 to 75 minutes. Following the tradition of the earliest Christian churches, the Lord's Supper (Communion) is celebrated at the end of every Sunday morning service.
Child care is offered during worship for infants by screened, background-checked church members. Children from Pre-K through fourth grade start the service with their parents, then are offered a dismissal to a Children's Church lesson during the sermon. Visitors are invited to come as they are; the church notes that God knows, loves, and welcomes each person in whatever attire he finds them.
Those who cannot make it on Sunday can join the gathering on YouTube Live to experience the service in real time, and full recordings remain available afterward.
Wednesday nights and a week of Bible study
The rhythm of ministry extends well beyond Sunday morning. Bible Study Fellowship meets on Monday evenings at 6:55 pm on the church campus, drawing adults into an international, in-depth program of Scripture study. Newcomers can learn more at bsfinternational.org.
Wednesday nights are a hub for intergenerational ministry. The evening opens at 6:00 pm with a dinner in the Fellowship Hall, with a suggested donation of $5 per person or $20 per family. At 7:00 pm, three studies meet in different buildings. Adults gather in the sanctuary building for a study through the book of Colossians. Youth meet in the lower education building for a study called Treasuring God's Word. Elementary children meet in the upper education building for the New City Catechism. The evening wraps at 8:15 pm. Wednesday night activities run on a bi-weekly schedule through the fall.
Men gather for breakfast on Saturday mornings at 8:30 am in the Fellowship Hall. The monthly gathering includes good food, fellowship, and a short devotional message, with no cost to attend.
Women meet on the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 am to 11:00 am in the Education Building. The current study follows the Revive our Hearts Women in the Bible materials, walking through the story of Abigail from 1 Samuel 25. Participants use the study guide Abigail - Living With the Difficult People in Your Life, watching video teaching together and sharing in discussion and prayer. The series runs August through February, with a break in December for an annual Christmas brunch.
A campus that hosts more than one church
The church's campus is intended to reflect the kingdom of God, and it is shared with other ministries. Iglesia Linaje Escogido, a Spanish-speaking congregation, also calls the campus home, with services in Spanish through the week: prayer on Thursday evenings, an evangelistic gathering on Saturday evenings, and Sunday school on Sunday afternoons.
The campus is also home to CHEC Academy, a homeschool education community that serves as one of the largest providers of the PEP (StepUp) scholarship program in the state of Florida. Families interested in CHEC can find more at CHECAcademy.com.
A church planted, that plants others
Lake Osborne Church began as a mission church itself, originally meeting on Thursdays in a home on Sunset Drive. As the group grew, it began a Sunday morning worship service and in 1957 was constituted as an official church.
The congregation purchased a permanent site at its current corner of Sunset Drive and Sixth Avenue South and worshiped first in the two-story house on the property. In 1961, construction began on a new building that served as the sanctuary until 1985. The original two-story house continued in a number of capacities, including as a youth center, coffee house, and multi-purpose space, until it was demolished in 1984 to make room for the current sanctuary, which stands on the footprint of the original house.
As a church that was once planted, Lake Osborne has long existed for the good of its community and the world. It has participated in the planting of several churches in Palm Beach and Martin counties and continues to support mission work both nationally and abroad.
Mission partners
The church supports a network of mission and ministry partners. Among the organizations that Lake Osborne stands behind are Reformed University Fellowship (RUF), 4Kids, Mission to the World (MTW), the Bible Study Fellowship international program, Spanish River Counseling, and CHEC of Palm Beach. Individual missionaries are also supported, with their stories shared through the church's missions ministry.
Leadership
