La Roca Comunidad Cristiana in Chula Vista: Thirteen Churches, One Family Vision

Church of Christ Church in Chula Vista, California

La Roca Comunidad Cristiana is a Spanish-speaking family of thirteen churches led from Chula Vista, California, by pastors José and Michelle Mayorquín, with campuses across the southwestern United States and northern and central Mexico. The network focuses on marriage, women, men, youth, and children's ministries built around a vision of family restoration.

About La Roca Comunidad Cristiana

A Family of Churches Rooted in Chula Vista

La Roca Comunidad Cristiana calls itself "un lugar para todos," a place for everyone. From its home base on Fenton Street in Chula Vista, this family of churches has grown into thirteen locations stretching from Phoenix to Puerto Vallarta, from Miami to Mexicali. The original San Diego campus still sets the pace for the network, gathering hundreds each Sunday in three back-to-back Spanish services, while sister congregations in Arizona, Texas, Florida, California, and across northern and central Mexico extend the same vision to families in their own neighborhoods.

The heart of the work is a single sentence the leadership repeats on every campus: "We are a community of families that has discovered that the love of God can restore us, our families, and our society." That sentence - restoration through family - is what the church organizes everything else around.

José and Michelle Mayorquín: Twenty-Plus Years of Family Ministry

Pastors José and Michelle Mayorquín lead La Roca from the Chula Vista campus. They came to the work more than twenty years ago, answering what they describe as a clear call to connect families with God and His purpose. They have spent those two decades building not a single congregation but a movement: a network of neighborhood-sized churches where every age, stage, and language finds a place.

The Mayorquíns remain very much a husband-and-wife team. The network describes them as parents and pastors, leading together, and their names appear on every campus page alongside the local contact information. Their son Suhail Rodríguez is one of the San Diego children's ministry directors, and another family member, Hanna Mayorquín, leads the same age group at the Miami campus.

Sundays at the Chula Vista Campus

The Chula Vista campus sits at 2371 Fenton Street, just off the 805 in southern San Diego County. The office is open from 10 AM to 4 PM during the week, and the phone line, (619) 656 5473, is staffed through those hours for visits, prayer requests, and general questions.

Sunday is the main gathering day. Three identical services run at 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM, and 1:15 PM, all in Spanish. The pattern of three services in the same language lets families choose the time that fits their week, and the same teaching is preached at each service so no one misses out. Inside, the experience is family-oriented, with a worship team leading the congregation in song and a children's check-in process that sends each age group to its own room.

Children move to their own age-appropriate programs while parents stay in the main room: Piedritas for preschoolers, Chicos Gigantes for elementary-age kids, and UNO Impact for junior highers. After the service, families often stay for coffee and conversation, or head to one of the many small groups meeting during the week.

One Church, Thirteen Campuses

La Roca is not a single church with a satellite or two. It is a family of thirteen congregations, each with its own address, its own service times, and its own local team, but all sharing the same leadership, the same vision, and the same ministries.

The seven U.S. campuses are San Diego, California (2371 Fenton Street, Chula Vista); Los Angeles, California (16221 Mulholland Drive); Yuma, Arizona (3780 S. 4th Avenue, Suite K, The Village Plaza); Tucson, Arizona (3696 W Orange Grove Road); Phoenix, Arizona (Valley Christian Schools Tempe, 6304 S Price Road); Dallas, Texas (4503 Cross Timbers Road, Flower Mound); and Miami, Florida (The Landmark at Merrick Park, 358 San Lorenzo Avenue, Suite 3005, Coral Gables).

The six Mexican campuses are Tijuana - Río (Blvd. Sánchez Taboada 10521-C, Zona Río); Tijuana - Santa Fe (C. Vecinal 4190, Col. San Antonio de los Buenos); Tijuana - Este (Cinépolis Plaza Monarca, Sala 2); Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco (Holiday Inn & Suites Puerto Vallarta Marina & Golf); Guadalajara, Jalisco (Av. Ignacio L Vallarta 1921, Col Americana, Lafayette); and Mexicali, Baja California (Blvd. Adolfo López Mateos 2494, Justo Sierra).

Most campuses meet in Spanish. Tucson stands out as the only campus that runs English services alongside Spanish: English at 10 AM, Spanish from 11:15 AM to 12:45 PM, with a Thursday evening prayer meeting at 6:30 PM. Every campus publishes its own phone number or WhatsApp contact and maintains its own Instagram and Facebook pages. The San Diego campus phone, (619) 656 5473, doubles as the network's general switchboard.

Matrimonios que Triunfan: A Marriage Ministry Built on Small Groups

Marriages sit at the center of the La Roca vision, and the marriage ministry, Matrimonios que Triunfan, is one of the church's flagship programs. Its mission statement: "We are a community of marriages where our desire is for couples to find their purpose and be restored to live in unity, connecting their lives with God."

Couples who join are placed into a small group of three to five other marriages that meets weekly in someone's home, usually on a weeknight, for Bible study, conversation, and prayer. Each group is led by a couple who has been through the ministry and trained to shepherd others. The format is intentionally simple: a short lesson, a lot of real conversation, and time to pray for one another's marriages.

In the San Diego area alone, more than twenty such groups meet on weeknights. Chula Vista has Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday groups. Otay Ranch, Otay Mesa, San Ysidro, Rancho del Rey, Paradise Valley, and Ocean View Hills each host their own cluster. There are also two Zoom groups, an online-only group that meets Thursday nights and draws couples from across the network, and a hybrid group that meets in person one week and online the next.

Outside of San Diego, the same ministry is active in every campus city: Phoenix, Tucson, Yuma, Dallas, Miami, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Mexicali. The flagship online group meets Thursdays at 8 PM Central, 6 PM Pacific, 9 PM Eastern, and uses Zoom ID 812 2449 5005.

Aurora Mujeres: Stories, Courses, and a Women's Conference

The women's ministry, Aurora Mujeres, takes its name and its anchor verse from Isaiah 58:8: "Your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will come quickly. Your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. You will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say, 'Here am I.'"

Aurora's vision, in the leadership's words, is that "the woman reaches her maximum potential when she is motivated and connected to the purpose God has for her and for which she was created." The ministry has three arms.

The first is a long-running blog of personal essays. Women from across the network write about their lives - about losing a mother, about a long road to motherhood, about a child born with a cleft lip, about rebuilding a marriage, about leaving addiction, about walking through depression and back, about discovering that God's plans are better than theirs. Recent posts include "A ti que eres hija(o)" (To you who are a daughter) by Laura López, "Levanta tu mirada" (Lift up your eyes) by Verónica Parra, "De carbón a diamante" (From coal to diamond) by Estibaliz Zúñiga, "Yo me encargo de él" (I will take care of him) by Jasmin Márquez, "Cuando intercedes, ¡el cielo escucha!" (When you intercede, heaven listens) by Jacqueline Arias, "Restauración" by Martha Rivas, "El camino de la maternidad" by Julieta Zatarain, and "Sendero" by Thelma Gutierrez. The essays are honest, specific, and unafraid of hard subjects, and the comments underneath show that women from many of the La Roca campuses read and respond to one another.

The second arm is a series of women's courses that run on most campuses. In Tucson, the Aurora team runs a spring session of small courses for women: "Ganando la batalla de la mente" (Winning the battle of the mind) on Tuesday mornings with Zulema Rivera, "Cambia tu actitud, cambia tu vida" (Change your attitude, change your life) on Friday mornings with Lety Salas and Ilse Galindo, "Una mujer segura" (A confident woman) as a hybrid class on Tuesday evenings with Annete Vea and Karina Fernandez, and "Límites" (Boundaries) on Thursday evenings with Liliana Byrd and Nubia Alvarez. In Yuma, Cynthia Zamudio leads "Reinicia tu corazón" (Reset your heart) in two locations and weeknight options.

The third arm is a periodic women's conference called Congreso Aurora, which has drawn women to Tijuana and to Miami in recent editions. The program typically includes multiple teaching sessions, extended times of worship and reflection, and space to connect with other women from across the network. Aurora also produces a YouTube talk show of the same name.

Hombres Escala: Men Learning to Lead at Home

The men's ministry, Hombres Escala, describes itself as "a group of men focused on supporting other men in taking their place in their family and in society, through simple tools, principles, and biblical values." The men meet in weekly groups organized by region.

In the San Diego and Tijuana area, weekly Hombres Escala groups meet Wednesday nights in Zona Río, Friday nights in Santa Fe, and Friday nights in Zona Este, the latter pair serving the Mexican campuses just across the border. In other cities the same model takes shape around local leaders. The ministry also runs a periodic men's retreat called ALFA CAMP.

Hombres Escala publishes a steady stream of articles on faith, finances, fatherhood, and marriage: "Resurgiendo de la pérdida económica" (Rising from financial loss), "Resurgiendo de las adicciones" (Rising from addiction), "Resurgiendo de la pérdida de un ser querido" (Rising from the loss of a loved one), "Resurgiendo del fracaso matrimonial" (Rising from marital failure), "La disciplina que funciona" (Discipline that works), "Cómo conectar con tus hijos" (How to connect with your kids), and many more. The writers treat money, work, anxiety, and parenting as spiritual subjects, and they do it in the same conversational, transparent voice the Aurora blog uses.

UNO: A Three-Stage Path for Students and Young Adults

The youth ministry is called UNO, Spanish for "one," and is built around three life stages, each with its own meetings and its own name. The vision is simple: "conectar, crecer y servir," to connect, grow, and serve.

UNO Youth serves middle and high school students ages 13 to 17. In the San Diego and Tijuana area, UNO Youth meets Wednesdays at 7 PM, with one group at the Zona Río campus and another at the Santa Fe campus. The same structure repeats in Phoenix, Yuma, Dallas, and Miami.

UNO Univ serves college and university students ages 18 to 24. UNO Univ meets Mondays at 7 PM, with groups in Zona Río and Santa Fe. Students who land in the San Diego area are welcome to join in person or follow along online.

UNO Pro serves young professionals ages 25 to 33. UNO Pro meets Saturdays with groups in Zona Río and Santa Fe. The transition from UNO Univ to UNO Pro is built into the ministry, so a student who starts in UNO Youth can keep moving through the same community all the way into their early thirties.

For older singles, the network also runs an Adultos Solteros group for unmarried adults over 33.

Piedritas, Chicos Gigantes, and UNO Impact: Children from Preschool Through Junior High

Children's ministry is split into three age groups that follow a child from preschool through the end of junior high. All three programs use curriculum from Think Orange, a publisher that designs family ministry resources for churches.

Piedritas is the preschool program, for children roughly ages 3 to 5. The San Diego Piedritas team is Monica and Abigail; other campuses have their own leaders (Odeth in Santa Fe, Dora and Leonardo Aceves in Tijuana Río, Erika Hernandez in Miami, Teresa Franco in Yuma, Sary Razo in Guadalajara). The program focuses on three things: motivating children to love God by awakening curiosity, motivating them to love life by encouraging discovery, and motivating them to love others by igniting passion.

Chicos Gigantes is the elementary program, for children roughly ages 6 to 12. The San Diego Chicos Gigantes team is Chino and Adriana; other leaders include Edgar and Victoria Buena in Santa Fe, Hector and Erlin Casas in Tijuana Río, Cristel Burgueño in Miami, Melissa Pérez in Yuma, Saul and Paulina Rascon in Guadalajara. The teaching walks through the Bible's big story of God's love, from Genesis to Revelation, with monthly guides that parents can pick up at the church and follow up on at home during the week.

UNO Impact is the junior high program, for students in grades 6 through 8. The San Diego UNO Impact director is Suhail Rodríguez; other campuses have Lorena Pérez in Santa Fe, Cristina Cortez in Tijuana Río, Hanna Mayorquín in Miami, Lolita and Allen Stiles in Yuma, David and Montse in Guadalajara. The UNO Impact blog publishes a steady stream of parenting articles on topics like helping preteens with phones, talking to kids about pornography, building emotional intelligence, raising resilient children, and managing social media as a family. Parents can download monthly guides, listen to a curated playlist, and connect with the broader Parent Cue and KidCheck apps for at-home follow-up.

CER and the Efecto Dios Devotional

Two programs support the spiritual growth of adults.

CER, which stands for Centro de Entrenamiento Roca, is the church's in-house Bible school. Its motto is "Más importante que hacer, es el ser," more important than doing, is being. The school runs for nine months and aims to train healthy, whole, well-prepared leaders who can serve with excellence. The full curriculum is built around Scripture, and graduates are equipped to step into leadership roles in their home campus and beyond. Information packets and pastoral reference letters are available for anyone considering enrollment.

Efecto Dios is the church's daily devotional. A free year-long reading plan, "Efecto Dios Plan 1 Año," is published on the YouVersion Bible app, and a parallel version is available in the La Roca mobile app. The devotional can be used at any time of day - morning, afternoon, or evening - and is built around a simple rhythm: read the day's passage, reflect on what God is saying, write down what stands out, and pray. The church also publishes a printed devotional agenda, "Efecto Dios," that can be picked up at any campus while supplies last.

The La Roca app, available on iOS and Android, also carries the church calendar, the Spotify podcast of recent messages, and online giving. The church's main YouTube channel, LaRocaCCTV, streams services and posts recent talks.

What La Roca Believes

La Roca's statement of faith is short and direct. The church teaches that God is one, but exists in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and that He is the Creator, in control of all things, holy, just, majestic, and loving. He knows everything, has a purpose, and is working to fulfill His will. Nothing in any person, thing, or idea compares to Him.

Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. The statement of faith holds that Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth, lived, died, and rose again, and that God offers the free gift of salvation to everyone who believes in Jesus and accepts Him as Savior. Anyone who accepts this gift is adopted as a son or daughter in God's family and will live with Him forever in heaven.

Human beings are made in God's image and for His pleasure, but all fall short of His intention - in other words, all have sinned. As a result, everyone is separated from God, even though He wants an intimate relationship with each person.

The church works as a non-denominational network: the thirteen campuses coordinate through the Mayorquíns and their leadership team, but each campus is locally led and there is no single national denominational body governing the work.

Missions and Generosity

Missions are an explicit part of the La Roca vision. The church runs a Misiones program that prepares and sends short- and long-term workers, and the program's current focus includes relief efforts in Venezuela. The Missions team has a dedicated giving channel through PayPal for anyone who wants to support that work.

Campus-level giving is handled separately, with online giving options for every campus. The San Diego giving page, the Miami giving page, the Yuma giving page, the Tucson giving page, the Dallas giving page, the Phoenix giving page, and the four Mexican campus giving pages are all available through the Generosidad section of the network site. Mission giving runs alongside local giving, so supporters can choose where their money goes.

Visiting the Chula Vista Campus

For a first-time visitor at the Chula Vista campus, the easiest entry point is one of the three Sunday services. Each runs in Spanish at 2371 Fenton Street, Chula Vista, CA 91914, at 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM, or 1:15 PM. The office is open from 10 AM to 4 PM on weekdays, and the phone line, (619) 656 5473, is staffed through those hours for visits, prayer requests, or general questions.

Two online forms lower the barrier even further. The "Es mi primera vez" (It's my first time) form and the "Necesito oración" (I need prayer) form each connect the new arrival with a real person from the church, who follows up within a day or two. The San Diego campus is on Facebook at LaRocaSanDiego and on Instagram at larocasd.

And for anyone ready to keep exploring, the network's thirteen campuses - seven in the United States and six in Mexico - are all part of the same family, and any one of them will feel a lot like home.
