A Place Where You Belong on Greenville Boulevard
Koinonia Christian Center, often called KCC, sits at 1405 SW Greenville Boulevard in Greenville, North Carolina, where Bishop Rosie S. O'neal founded a church built around the idea that "everybody matters to God." FELLOWSHIP THAT STRENGTHENS is a defining phrase for the church, and the invitation "Come Experience a Fellowship that Strengthens!" extends the same welcome. Two Sunday gatherings, a full week of ministry across generations, and a steady stream of community events make Koinonia a familiar gathering place on the south side of Greenville.
The senior pastor today is Pastor Trev Evans, who leads alongside Executive Pastor Shondell Jones and a pastoral team that includes Pastors Christy Jones, Anthony Hutchins, Traci Hutchins, Amy Barnwell, and Sidette Brown. Bishop Rosie remains the founder and continues to be referenced by name across the church's ministry pages, including the long-running Differently Abled Fun Fair, which she and the executive pastors still help lead.
What to Expect on Sunday Morning
Worship happens twice each Sunday, at 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM, in the main building on the KCC campus. The church's own description is simple and welcoming: a casual environment where people are invited to come as they are. For Communion Sundays the church sends out a heads-up and asks attendees to dress in business or formal attire; otherwise, "whatever you're wearing, we'll be glad to see you."
Music each Sunday blends contemporary songs with traditional hymns. A full band plays alongside a choir and several rotating praise teams, so the sound changes from week to week but the goal stays the same: a wide range of music that lets different generations worship in their own voice. The preaching is described as Bible-based, relevant, practical, and easy to understand, with a commitment to boldly proclaiming the unchanging Word of God.
Services can also be watched online. Koinonia's YouTube channel carries the weekly gatherings, and the MyKoinonia portal serves as the church's main online hub for forms, registration, and updates. Giving is available online through the church's giving page, and the church describes its posture for giving as cheerful, generous, and rooted in expectation (2 Corinthians 9:6-7, Luke 6:38).
Kids at KCC: KidMin from Birth Through 5th Grade
Children's ministry is split into two wings that meet during both Sunday gatherings. Kids Club serves children from six weeks through kindergarten, while KidQuest serves 1st through 5th grade. Together these make up KidMin, the church's children's ministry for ages birth through 5th grade.
Families can stay connected during the week through the children's app, which is offered as a companion to the Sunday experience. The app carries the same lessons and activities used in the classroom, so kids can log on each week for their own worship experience and continue the conversation at home. FX: The Family Experience, a quarterly high-energy Sunday, brings the kids' performing arts groups into the main worship gathering, with youth choirs and dance teams leading worship at both the 9 AM and 12 PM services.
Each summer, Vacation Bible School draws children from kindergarten through 5th grade for a week of lessons, activities, worship, and games. The most recent theme, "Kingdom Quest: An Epic Journey to Discover God's Kingdom," gives a flavor of the playful, Scripture-rooted tone the church uses with its children.
S3 StudentMin: Middle School and High School
Students in 6th through 12th grades belong to S3 StudentMin, which meets on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM. The name "S3" shows up across everything from a Wednesday-night Bible study to weekend bonfires, sneaker balls, video-game tournaments, and the annual Catalyst: The S3 Youth Revival, a three-night event with dynamic drama, live worship, and guest speakers.
The ministry has its own app for students who cannot make it in person, and the church encourages teens to log on each week for their own worship experience. Special trips and events round out the year, including free outings to Judgement Day, a walk-through Christian drama in Goldsboro, and a Catalyst Recharge worship night held several times a year. Fundraisers like the Old School vs. New School Basketball Game send proceeds to the S3 Summer Camp, and end-of-summer outings take the whole group to local fun parks.
Light Campus Ministry for College Students
College students at East Carolina University and nearby schools are reached through The Light Campus Ministry, which Koinonia supports and describes as focused on raising up active students who deeply know Jesus, develop as leaders, build real connections, and boldly share their faith.
Light Campus meetups happen on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 7 PM at venues around campus, including Hendrix Theater for the monthly Night of Worship, MCSC Room 253 for campus meetings, the Gaming Lounge in the New Student Center for Game Night, and the Koinonia campus for Food & Fellowship. Students stay connected through a GroupMe chat and an Instagram account. Sunday worship at Koinonia at 9 AM and 12 PM is also promoted as the weekend gathering place for college students.
Life Groups: Smaller Circles Around the Church
Life Groups are Koinonia's version of small groups, and they are described as the place where the church's Cornerstone ministry first took root: a group that began in a living room in 2003 with twelve people, big faith, and a dream to build something that would actually change lives. Today the groups meet in homes and on campus across the area, gathering to discuss and apply God's Word, share prayer requests, encourage one another, and walk through life's ups and downs together.
The church frames Life Groups around four convictions: biblical fellowship strengthens you, you aren't made to do life alone, purpose comes through contribution not consumption, and the worst time to build community is when you need it. The Life Groups page encourages sign-ups through the MyKoinonia portal, and groups are open to both members and newcomers.
Adults: Men, Women, Couples, Seniors, and Singles
Koinonia runs a full slate of adult ministries designed for every season of life.
Men gather for the annual Men's Health Fair: Barbershop Talk Edition, a candid day focused on physical, mental, spiritual, and social health. Women have their own ministry that meets throughout the year, hosts the annual Women's Retreat at Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center, and runs events like Arise to Wellness, a Saturday covering brain fog, menopause support, natural skincare, and other practical self-care topics. A Financial Peace University class and a follow-up Investing as a Faithful Steward class help adults take practical next steps with their money through the Ramsey curriculum.
Married and engaged couples have several touchpoints: the Couples Connect Breakfast, Couples Field Day, and the Premarital Bootcamp for dating, engaged, or considering-engagement couples. Seniors enjoy two signature events each year: the Black and White Senior Affair in the spring and the Senior Autumn Elegance Gala in the fall, both held in The Journey building on the KCC campus. Singles have their own active ministry with events like Game Night, Singles Field Day, Singles Strike Night (a bowling night limited to 30 participants), Created to Create Paint Night, and the Singles Sneaker Ball.
SDR: Separated & Divorce Recovery meets each fall on Sundays from 12 PM to 2 PM in The Journey, room 1. It is a ministry for men and women who are separated or divorced, partnering with the DivorceCare curriculum to provide practical and spiritual guidance for moving forward.
The Differently Abled Fun Fair
For more than sixteen years, Koinonia has hosted the Differently Abled Fun Fair (DAFF), an annual event held at the Greenville Convention Center for VIPs, individuals with severe and profound mental and physical disabilities, along with their immediate families and caregivers in Eastern North Carolina and beyond. Spearheaded by Pastor Trev and Lady Martha Evans, Pastors Shondell and Christy Jones, and the wider Koinonia family, DAFF is described as a "beacon of joy and support" designed to make VIPs feel accepted, loved, and remembered.
The fair features crafts, dancing, photo stations, rides, games, live performances, a caregiver relaxation area, free haircuts, and a celebratory carnival atmosphere. The most recent theme, "World of Sports," gave the day a sportsmanship feel with games and activities designed to be accessible for every VIP.
Family & Friends Weekend
Each fall, Koinonia pauses for Family & Friends Weekend, a Friday-through-Sunday stretch built around the theme "Family Matters." Friday night brings a Family Game Night in the main building with games, food, and a Family Feud-style competition. Saturday moves outdoors for Family Fun Day with food trucks, family activities, and a Backyard BBQ Showdown Cook-Off. The same Saturday also hosts the Veterans Matter - Community Resource Fair in The Journey, where veterans and their families connect with local resources and hear from a guest speaker.
The weekend closes on Sunday with a special Family & Friends Presentation at the three Sunday worship gatherings (7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, and 12:30 PM), focused on the idea that "every family matters and everybody matters to God."
What Koinonia Believes
Koinonia describes itself as an interdenominational, Bible church, "a diverse church that welcomes people from all different backgrounds and beliefs," focused on studying and living by the teachings of the Holy Bible. The statement of faith includes belief in one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who is the Creator of all things. The church holds that Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, crucified, buried, resurrected, and ascended into Heaven, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father.
The Bible is taught as the inspired, infallible Word of God and the rule of faith and conduct. Koinonia believes in personal salvation through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, in the resurrection of the dead, in the eternal happiness of the saved and the eternal damnation of the lost, in sanctification through the Word and the Holy Spirit, and in divine healing through faith in Jesus' name. The church practices water baptism, teaches that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is distinct from the new birth, believes in speaking with tongues as the Spirit gives utterance, and affirms the gifts and fruit of the Spirit as available to believers today.
Koinonia also believes in the personal, soon-coming return of Jesus Christ and in evangelism and missionary work in accordance with the Great Commission. Tithing, sowing, and supporting the pastor are taught as biblical practices of generosity, and the church frames its giving culture around 2 Corinthians 9:7 and Luke 6:38.
The Mission and Core Values
The church's mission is to raise up an army of believers who grow in God's Word, build real relationships, serve with purpose, and share their faith. That mission breaks down into four parts:
- Grow in God's Word by making time for it, remembering what it says, and living it out daily.
- Build real relationships by showing up authentically, encouraging one another, and carrying each other's burdens.
- Serve with purpose by using gifts, walking in humility, and looking for needs to meet.
- Share our faith by telling the story, living as an example, and being bold with gentleness.
Five core values run underneath everything the church does:
- Everybody Matters to God. Everybody should be seen, heard, known, valued, and loved, without favorites.
- Found People Find People. Because Jesus found us, members look outward, share the Gospel, and invite others to "come and see."
- Saved People Serve. Every member of the Body of Christ is a contributor, not just a consumer.
- Growing People Change. The Christian life is a journey of continuous transformation; progress matters more than perfection.
- God's People Give. Giving is a spiritual discipline that supports the mission, grows faith, and brings freedom.
