At 2500 Avenue D in Katy, Texas, Katy Bible Church is known for expositional, Gospel-centered worship, biblical instruction for every age, and a strong missions emphasis. Its identity is “Expositional. Independent. Missional. Gospel-Centered.” The mission is to glorify God and make devoted followers of Christ by sharing His grace and mercy at home in Katy and around the world.
Sunday Morning at 2500 Avenue D
Sunday School begins at 9:00 AM every Sunday, and the worship service begins at 10:30 AM. The church meets at 2500 Avenue D. The worship service keeps the preaching of the Word at its center. Congregational prayer is offered both collectively and individually, while music combines God-centered, Biblically rich traditional hymns and contemporary praise songs with various instruments.
Children are welcomed as part of the church family. A nursery is available for children two years old and under during the 9:00 AM Sunday School hour and from 10:30 AM until noon during worship. Children from three years old through fifth grade are invited to Sunday School, while younger children stay with their families during the service. Listening guides are available for children.
Snacks and fellowship follow worship. On the second Sunday of each month, the congregation gathers for a fellowship lunch after the service, including people who are visiting or new to the church.
From a 1966 Bible Study to Katy Bible Church
Katy Bible Church began in 1966 as a Bible study made up of members of various churches. Those participants wanted a more missions-minded church, so Katy Community Church was chartered. In 1967, the congregation first met in a newly constructed building at its present location on Avenue D. A new charter and the name Katy Bible Church followed in 1976.
Matt Mancini was called as senior pastor in February 2013, succeeding Ronald McDonnel, who had served as senior pastor from 1977 until his retirement. The church's leadership includes elders, staff and deacons, and past staffs have also included associate pastors and youth pastors. Membership has been notably stable: more than half of the congregation has belonged for more than ten years, and some members are charter members dating to the founding.
What Katy Bible Church Holds to Be True
Katy Bible Church's teaching is explicitly rooted in the Bible and the person and work of God:
- God: God is sovereign, just, righteous, loving, eternal, omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, immutable and true. God creates and sustains all things.
- Jesus Christ: Jesus is the one and only mediator between God and humanity, and His shed blood is the only atonement for sin.
- The Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit comforts, guides and indwells each believer.
- Scripture: The Bible, in its original autographs, is the only inspired, infallible and inerrant Word of God. Genesis gives the only credible account of creation and humanity.
- Humanity and salvation: People are created in God's image but fell into sin through disobedience and are born inherently sinful. Salvation is by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Faith itself is a gift from God, so no person may boast in good works. Belief brings eternal life, while rejection leads to condemnation and eternal separation from God.
- Church ordinances and the future: Water baptism and the Lord's Supper are the church's prescribed ordinances. Christ's second coming will be personal, visible and premillennial.
Expositional Worship: Word, Prayer, Song and Communion
The pulpit ministry is committed to faithful exposition of the Bible. From the pulpit, sermons proceed verse by verse through biblical books to show what God has said and how it remains relevant today. Difficult passages are not passed over, and preaching does not focus only on favorite topics. Every book, chapter and verse is treated as the inerrant Word of God and as worthy of careful study and reflection.
Prayer is treated as an important, effectual and particularly personal blessing, offered both corporately and individually. Music is vital to worship, with traditional hymns and contemporary praise songs accompanying the congregation's praise of God. On the last Sunday of each month, Katy Bible Church observes the Lord's Supper, remembering Christ's atoning death and looking forward to His return while treating communion as a time of unity.
Sunday School for Every Age
At 9:00 AM each Sunday, Sunday School classes meet for every age. The adult class studies a variety of biblical books and topics throughout the year through biblical teaching, discussion and fellowship. Its aim is a deeper understanding of Scripture, a stronger faith, encouragement toward Christlikeness and practical faithfulness to God's Word.
Classes for students in sixth through twelfth grade seek to build a solid biblical foundation. Teachers of varying ages and experience lead study and discussion, and a bite to eat and time together in prayer are also part of class. The youth class is regarded as an essential part of a student's development and a place to grow in relationship with Christ.
For children from three years old through fifth grade, the Children's Ministry wing hosts classes that trace the whole Bible from Genesis through Revelation, showing how the gospel unfolds and seeking both evangelism and spiritual growth among the youngest children. The nursery welcomes children two and under during both the 9:00 AM class hour and the 10:30 AM worship hour.
Rooted: Middle and High School Students
Rooted Student Ministry is for students in sixth through twelfth grade who want to become deeply rooted in Christ and His Word. Its rhythm combines biblical teaching, meaningful relationships, prayer, worship, service and fun. The goal is for students to know Christ, grow in His likeness and make Him known.
Sunday School remains part of the student week at 9:00 AM, with breakfast, study of God's Word, discussion and prayer. Midweek gatherings add a shared meal, fellowship, games, biblical teaching, singing and small-group prayer led by volunteers.
The annual retreat cycle includes a two-night DNOW winter retreat and a four-night summer retreat. At the winter retreat, students stay in separate homes hosted by trusted church members and gather for biblical teaching, worship, fellowship, games and a citywide scavenger hunt. The summer retreat brings students together for four nights at a retreat facility, with Bible study, singing, games, activities and time building fellowship. These retreats continue Rooted's emphasis on faith and relationships together.
Growing Together in Community Groups
Katy Bible Church sees the church as a family of believers growing together in faith. To encourage a more missional mindset, it intentionally limits organized programming so there is room for an organic experience of community and time to practice biblical hospitality both within the congregation and toward the surrounding community. Community groups meet on different days of the week and create an intimate setting for connection as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Each community group centers on four habits:
- Relationships: Getting to know one another at a deeper level.
- Fellowship: Building genuine friendships with each other.
- Discipleship: Learning together through deeper discussion of God's Word.
- Prayer: Supporting one another in times of need and rejoicing together in times of joy.
The Ladies Ministry encourages women of all ages to grow with Christ and one another through fellowship, discipleship, service and special events during the year. The Men's Ministry meets for breakfast once each month to explore biblical masculinity. A men's fellowship lunch takes place at 11:00 AM on the Monday after the third Sunday of each month. The second-Sunday fellowship lunch after worship offers another setting for connection, including for visitors and those newer to KBC.
Missions from Katy to the World
The church longs to see God receive glory throughout the nations as the gospel spreads, and missions have been part of its identity since its beginning as a missions-minded fellowship. Supported work spans church planting, leadership training, Bible translation, evangelism, discipleship, children's camps, conferences, care for people with special needs, and development work such as orphanages, hospitals and job training centers. The emphasis is not confined to distant mission: the congregation also seeks to share grace and mercy at home in Katy.
International mission work includes coordination and training for ministry in Serbia and Eastern Europe, church planting and opportunities for blind people to be discipled, training of leaders who can serve churches and communities in India, Bible translation among unreached people groups in West Africa, and theological training in Ukraine. Other work teaches and disciples through small groups and life-on-life relationships, communicates the gospel through media and music, develops mentoring ministry among Spanish speakers and shares the message with Jewish people.
In the United States, the mission emphasis includes reaching soldiers and their families, discipling and mentoring people in everyday neighborhoods, serving Jewish people, and supporting Christian camping and ministry to youth. These expressions of mission reflect the church's wider aim of glorifying God among the nations and making devoted followers of Christ.
