A Family on Cavalcade Street
Kashmere Gardens Missionary Baptist Church stands on Cavalcade Street in the Kashmere Gardens neighborhood of northeast Houston, just minutes from the city’s central business core. Members and visitors call the church "The Gardens," a nickname that captures the spirit of a congregation that has spent more than six decades growing in the same community it was planted to serve. Under the banner of "One Big Family," the church centers its life on a single aim: "Building a family devoted to God through Christ with love, prayer, praise, teaching, stewardship and evangelism; in order to save the lost, serve the unfortunate and strengthen the weak."
The vision statement, written plainly, is "A church where every member is a disciple of Christ." That vision has shaped a steady rhythm of worship, study, and ministry that runs through the week, and it is the thread that ties together the church’s many circles of fellowship.
Senior Pastor Edward L. Durant Jr.
Rev. Edward L. Durant Jr. has served as Senior Pastor of Kashmere Gardens MBC and is recognized throughout Houston and the surrounding area for his work in education and spiritual empowerment. An educator by profession, he is a graduate of Kashmere Senior High School, Sam Houston State University, and Texas Southern University, and spent ten years as a teacher and math coach in North Forest Independent School District before giving himself fully to ministry.
He was baptized at the age of five by Rev. M. L. Bryant at Forest Lawn Missionary Baptist Church, and the integrity, patience, and sense of service modeled there remain at the heart of his leadership. He credits his grandmother, Alene Bowie Durant, called "Mother," with instilling the work ethic and moral framework that he carries into the pulpit. Under his leadership, Kashmere Gardens MBC designed its first church logo, launched a mobile app, and installed a digital marquee sign, all signs of a congregation stepping confidently into the digital age without leaving its roots behind.
Beyond the church, Pastor Durant preaches, teaches, leads short talks, and convenes youth conferences, dialogues, and alliances in schools, churches, and community associations. He is described as "a defining voice of alliance of people and organizations that are committed to the transformation of the family unit, Christian discipleship and community involvement."
What Kashmere Gardens Believes
The church sets out a thorough confession of faith in eighteen articles, beginning with the conviction that the Holy Bible is "written by men divinely inspired" and is the "true center of Christian union." The statement affirms one living and true God in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and teaches that humanity fell from a state of holiness through voluntary transgression.
Salvation is described as wholly of grace, made available through the mediatorial work of the Son of God, who honored the divine law by his personal obedience and made a full atonement by his death. Justification is a free gift received by faith in the Redeemer’s blood, and the blessings of salvation are open to all. Regeneration, repentance, faith, election, sanctification, and the perseverance of the saints are each treated in turn.
The articles of faith also describe a "Gospel Church" as a congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the Gospel, with the only scriptural officers being bishops or pastors and deacons. Christian baptism is taught as the immersion of a believer in water, and the Lord’s Supper is observed as a memorial of Christ’s dying love, preceded by solemn self-examination. The first day of the week is kept as the Christian Sabbath, set apart for worship and the means of grace. The statement closes with teaching on civil government, the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, and the return of Christ at the last day for final retribution.
Sunday Worship and the Weekly Rhythm
The weekly calendar at Kashmere Gardens MBC is built around Sunday morning. Church School begins at 9:00 a.m., and the Sunday Worship Service follows at 10:15 a.m. Worship is offered in person and virtually, with services broadcast online for those who cannot be in the sanctuary. The invitation posted to visitors is warm and direct: "Do you need to hear a life changing word from God? The Gospel of Jesus Christ will transform your life."
On the first and third Tuesday of each month, the Sanctuary Choir gathers for rehearsal at 7:30 p.m., with an annual Choir Day held on a Sunday afternoon to celebrate the ministry of music that runs through the life of the church. Wednesdays bring two Bible study opportunities: a midday session at 12 noon and an evening session at 6:30 p.m., both centered on deepening biblical literacy and applying God’s Word. The church’s study on stewardship, in particular, has been a focus as members work together to grow as a unified body of believers through reading, study, and application.
Ministries for Every Season of Life
Kashmere Gardens MBC has organized a wide circle of ministries so that men, women, young adults, youth, and children all have a place to serve and grow.
The B.R.O.S. Men’s Ministry, an acronym for Blessed, Redeemed, Ordered and Strong, inspires and empowers men of all ages for service and Christ-focused living. It calls men to courage, accountability, and the discovery of their God-given gifts, time, and treasure. A Saturday morning men’s Bible study gathers under the banner "I Am My Brother’s Keeper," with men helping men grow in Christ.
The Women of Faith ministry seeks to bond with women of every season of life who desire a deep, meaningful relationship with Christ, offering worship, volunteer activities, group studies, and special events. The Women’s Bible study meets on Saturday mornings, and the current study uses a book titled "Women Leading Women" by Jay Martin and Terri Stovall.
Young adults are gathered under the name F.I.R.E. - Faithful, Inspired, Redeemed, Enlightened. The ministry uses biblical teaching and discipleship principles to ignite, excite, and inspire young adults to live a life pleasing to Christ, anchored in Matthew’s call to let their light shine before others.
The Children’s and Youth Ministry offers grade-specific classes and activities that allow children to bond with peers in their own age group for a more productive learning environment. Events held throughout the year aim to stimulate children both spiritually and physically, with a stated goal of positively influencing them to make wise decisions with God in mind.
The Marriage Ministry focuses on building deeper, more intimate relationships both with God and with one’s spouse. The ministry educates, builds communication skills, and provides tools to enrich marriage based on the biblical understanding of the precepts of marriage.
The Prayer Ministry is described as "connecting people to God through corporate prayer," and the church quotes Isaiah to remind the body that God’s house is meant to be "a house of prayer for all people." Mission opportunities round out the ministry line-up, with roles for culinary help, clean-up, church maintenance, festivals, special events, children’s activities, elderly assistance, and food pantry distribution.
Reaching Out Beyond the Walls
Kashmere Gardens MBC takes seriously the call to serve the unfortunate and strengthen the weak. The church partners with Houston Responds in its Northeast cluster, joining other congregations and community groups in coordinated outreach. The mission opportunities ministry lists food pantry distribution, elderly assistance, and outreach as ongoing ways members can lend a helping hand, and there is always a need for volunteers willing to use their gifts in service.
The church is also walking through a season of building renovation and repair called the Nehemiah Project. Each member is asked to commit "$4 per day" or "$25 per week" above tithes and offerings to complete the necessary work. Pastoral appreciation is part of the rhythm of congregational life as well, with the church marking the pastor’s anniversary as a moment to remember and encourage the one who has poured out blood, sweat, and tears in service to the body.
Salvation and the ABCs
The church lays out the path of salvation in the simple steps of the ABCs: Admit, Believe, and Confess. Admitting to God that one is a sinner is the first step of repentance, since "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Believing in Jesus Christ as God’s Son and receiving his gift of forgiveness follows, and the church points to John 3:16 as the heart of the offer. Confessing faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior completes the response, and the church encourages new believers to share their decision with their pastor or a Christian friend and to follow Christ’s example in baptism by immersion.
Giving and Staying Connected
Members and friends can give in person, by mail, or through several digital channels. Online giving is available through Pushpay, and the church also accepts gifts through Zelle, Cash App, and text-to-give by texting KGMBC to 77977. The KashmereGardensMBC app is available in the iTunes and Google Play stores, and can be reached by texting KGMBCAPP to 77977. The church is active on Facebook, Instagram, and X, where Sunday services and other updates are shared.
