Horizon Church sits on South River Road in West Sacramento, a Pentecostal congregation that calls itself a place where heaven and earth come together. Under the pastoral care of Coco and Lynn Perez since 1995, the church has shaped its identity around five words: Worship, Teach, Reach, Fellowship, Care - what the staff simply calls The Call. Two Sunday services, a midweek FamilyOne gathering for every age, and a Christ-centered recovery program on Tuesdays give the rhythm to a church that is small enough to know its people and ambitious enough to send missionaries across the globe.
Sundays at Horizon
Horizon gathers twice on Sunday mornings at 1300 South River Road. The first service begins at 9:00 AM and the second at 11:00 AM, both featuring worship and a message from God's Word. Visitors stopping in for the first time are welcomed with a free coffee or tea at Cafe 235 after filling out a visitor card at the information table. A Prayer Team also meets midweek to lift up requests sent in through the church's prayer page.
The Call: Worship, Teach, Reach, Fellowship, Care
Horizon sums up its purpose in five movements that run through every ministry.
We Worship. Worship is framed as the supreme purpose of every Christian's life, the way the people of God glorify His name.
We Teach. Horizon commits to preach the Word in season and out of season and to build Bible study times that are both exciting and practically applied.
We Reach. The church sees itself as answering the Great Commission, going out to make disciples of all people.
We Fellowship. Horizon calls this the Agape Feast - a time of celebration, laughter, and getting to know one another as more than Sunday acquaintances.
We Care. Caring is described as discipleship in action, the hand of the church stretched out to love the hardest of the hard who need someone to speak into their lives.
FamilyOne: Wednesday Night at the Heart of the Church
FamilyOne is Horizon's weekly midweek gathering, held every Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:30 PM under the motto One Family, One Church, One Word, One Worship. The evening opens with fellowship from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, followed by prayer and worship from 6:00 to 6:30 PM, and then breakout Bible studies and lessons from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. On the first Wednesday of each month, food is provided for the fellowship hour.
Adult classes include Pastor Coco's New Believers study (Following Jesus), Pastor Garrick's men's Bible study through the Book of Romans Part 2, and Pastor Danny's discipleship track. CounterCulture Student Ministry gathers students ages 12 to 17, while Adventure Kidz opens its own classroom for children under Pastor Lynn's leadership.
Celebrate Recovery on Tuesdays
Celebrate Recovery has been part of Horizon's life since 1996, when Pastor Garrick Vasquez stepped into the role he still holds. The Christ-centered, 12-step program meets every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 PM and is open to anyone struggling with hurts, habits, or hang-ups.
A typical Tuesday follows a familiar rhythm: opening prayer, worship, announcements and offering, a reading of the 12 steps or 8 principles, more worship, a lesson or testimony, the Serenity Prayer, and small groups broken into men's and women's circles. The last Tuesday of every month is Birthday Night, when victories over their successes are celebrated.
Horizon also offers Step Study, a deeper track using the four Journey Begins participant's guides in a gender-specific small group that meets once a week for up to two hours. Group guidelines keep the room safe: sharing stays focused on the speaker using "I" statements, cross talk is set aside, anonymity and confidentiality are required, and offensive language is off the table. Registration is not required and there is no obligation to stay.
Adventure Kidz: Teaching Children Who Jesus Is
Adventure Kidz Ministry, or AKM, is Horizon's children's ministry for kids of all ages, led by Children's Director Gina Hillmer. Volunteers use a curriculum that mixes Bible stories, songs, games, and crafts, and every volunteer is background-checked before serving. Gina is married to Rich and is mother to Andrew, Lee, and Cole, who is in heaven. Her heart for children shows up in the classroom - the goal is for every kid to encounter God's love and grow an everlasting relationship with Christ.
Adventure Kidz has its own hour during FamilyOne on Wednesday nights, so children worship and learn alongside their parents earlier in the day.
CounterCulture: A Student Movement That Pushes Back
CounterCulture is Horizon's student ministry for grades 7 through 12, gathering weekly at FamilyOne on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM. The group's name is the thesis: the world is in need of a counter-cultural movement, and these students want to be a light in the darkness and a voice for hope. Chris and Nancy Nelson, the new Student Ministry Directors, are West Sacramento residents and newlyweds. Chris is pursuing a Master's in Biblical Studies at William Jessup University, has coached youth and high school football, and managed a little league baseball team. Pastor Dave and Carrie Diggs are filling the role until a full-time director is in place.
The ministry offers Bible studies, retreats and conferences, and social events that double as outreach and friendship-building.
Men's Ministry: Iron Sharpens Iron
Horizon Men exists to see men become followers of Jesus who lead with integrity at home, at work, and in their community. In addition to Friday afternoons of Men of the Word at 4:30 PM, men gather for Wednesday night Bible study at FamilyOne at 6:30 PM (currently working through The Book of Jonah on RightNow Media), small groups, retreats and conferences, service projects such as visiting the sick and homebound, prayer groups, and social events including the popular Men's Breakfast.
Men's Ministry also runs Fireside Zoom Chat, a relaxed video call where men share what God is doing in their lives, pray together, and walk faithfully as brothers. Pastor Garrick leads the ministry.
Women's Ministry: A Path Shining Brighter
Horizon Women is committed to strengthening women in Christ and making a positive impact in the world. The week centers on Thursday morning: coffee, muffins, and fellowship at 9:30 AM, followed by Bible study at 10:15 AM. The ministry also gathers for small groups, retreats and conferences, service projects such as Meal Train and Homeless Bags, prayer groups, and social events including the Women's Breakfast, luncheons, and Christmas Dinner. Lynn Perez has been involved with women's ministry at Horizon since she and Pastor Coco stepped into leadership.
Marriage: Building a Vertical Marriage
Marriage is a recurring theme at Horizon, and the church offers a five-week small group study called Vertical Marriage that draws practical advice from Dave and Ann Wilson. The study costs $20 per couple and includes workbooks for both spouses plus coffee, water, and tea. Gatherings are held at 2784 Costa Court in West Sacramento. The Marriage Ministry also hosts seasonal events such as the Bingo Potluck Night, an all-ages evening of potluck dinner and games.
GriefShare on Monday Evenings
Horizon runs the GriefShare program on Monday nights at 6:30 PM, a 13-week support group for people walking through loss. Each session opens with a 30-minute video from grief experts and people who have experienced loss, followed by group discussion. A participant workbook costs $20 and serves as a road map through the unpredictable journey of grief. The group is led by Pastor Garrick.
Worship Team: Musicians Who Lead the Room
The Horizon Church Worship Team is made up of musicians and singers from all walks of life, united by a love for Jesus and a desire to lead others into worship. They lead Sunday morning services and special events throughout the year and rehearse weekly. Anyone who sings or plays an instrument and has a heart for worship can sign up to be considered.
The team is led by Pastor Dave Diggs, Executive and Worship Arts Pastor. A third-generation pastor and lifelong worship leader, Dave came to Horizon in January 2025 after serving as Worship Pastor at another local church for more than 16 years. He is licensed with the Assemblies of God.
Beliefs: Evangelical and Pentecostal
Horizon identifies as both Evangelical and Pentecostal. The church holds that the Bible is the infallible, verbally inspired Word of God and the rule of faith and conduct. There is one living and true God, eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man, born of the virgin Mary, crucified for the sins of all mankind, raised from the dead, and ascended to heaven. Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, with the inward witness of the Spirit and the outward evidence of righteousness and true holiness.
Two ordinances mark the life of the church - believers' baptism by immersion, and Holy Communion with the fruit of the vine. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is taught as a subsequent empowering for witnessing and service, and the initial physical sign is speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance, first experienced by the disciples in the book of Acts.
Horizon also affirms divine healing as part of the atonement, the blessed hope of the rapture prior to Christ's return, the millennial reign of Christ, a final judgment for those who have rejected Christ, and the believer's future in the new heaven and new earth. The full statement of faith is patterned on the Assemblies of God Statement of Fundamental Truths.
The Pastoral Team
Pastor Coco Perez has been lead pastor of Horizon since 1995 and has been in ministry since 1976. He grew up in the 1960s counterculture, drawn to professional rock drumming until an encounter with God one summer evening on the banks of the American River redirected his life. A friend handed him Hal Lindsey's The Late Great Planet Earth, and a lifelong study of biblical prophecy, the book of Revelation, and the second coming of Christ began. He completed his ministry degree from the Assemblies of God Global Bible Institute and, before Horizon, served as student ministries pastor at Central Assemblies of God in San Diego and at Capitol Christian Center in Sacramento, and as an evangelist and director with Ambassadors in Missions.
Lynn Perez is the steady hand behind much of the church's ministry. She has been involved with women's ministry from the day the family stepped into church work and helps with kids, small groups, and Bible studies across the life of the church.
Pastor Garrick Vasquez has been part of Horizon since 1994 and has directed Celebrate Recovery since 1996. He received his ministerial license in 2016 and also heads Men's Ministry and GriefShare. Rosa Vasquez serves alongside him.
Pastor Daniel Villegas and his wife Sonia came to Horizon in 2005 from Brooklyn, where they led Sidewalk Sunday School in the boroughs of New York City. Pastor Danny first served as Children's Pastor for four years before stepping into his current role as Associate Pastor and Media Content Coordinator.
Pastor Dave Diggs and Carrie joined Horizon in January 2025. Dave has been leading worship since his sophomore year of high school, is licensed with the Assemblies of God, and is a third-generation pastor. The couple lives in Citrus Heights and are temporarily filling the role of Student Ministries Directors.
Gina Hillmer serves as Children's Director of Adventure Kidz Ministry.
Chris and Nancy Nelson are the church's Student Ministry Directors. Chris is pursuing a Master's in Biblical Studies at William Jessup University.
Missions Around the World
Horizon supports a global family of missionaries through the Assemblies of God.
Stephen and Cindy Aldrich serve in Belgium and have been AG missionaries since 1996. They have five children.
Mark and Sarah Brown serve in the Philippines, preaching the Gospel and seeking to see Filipinos reconciled to Him.
Scott and Marisa serve in Spain, building church growth while Marisa serves as President of the Spanish Bible school board.
Joyce Baergen serves in Myanmar (Burma), training teachers and church leaders, developing curriculum for the national church, and ministering to families in rural communities through outreach centers and community development.
Mark and Dalene serve in France, reaching unreached Muslim people groups and the secular French.
Horizon also partners with Jacob's Hope in Israel and Daniel and Kazune Matsunaga in Japan.
RightNow Media and the Library of Resources
Horizon provides free access to RightNow Media for everyone in the church. The streaming library holds over 20,000 videos from teachers and pastors, plus more than 2,000 safe, entertaining videos for kids. Series include free discussion guides and handouts, and the app works on every major streaming device.
The church also maintains an archive of sermons and Bible study videos online, including teaching from FamilyOne and baptisms from the congregation.
Giving and the Tithe.ly App
Giving is available online through Tithe.ly, and a Tithe.ly app is available for both iPhone and Android. The giving page quotes Luke 6:38, and recurring giving and gift tracking are supported through the platform.
Coming Up Through the Year
The community gathers around several signature events. The annual Trunk or Treat brings families together for decorated trunks, candy, games, and snacks. The Community Harvest Festival draws local vendors selling soaps, jams, jewelry, home decor, and crafts, with food and beverages available for purchase. All-Church Lake Day sends the congregation to Lake Natoma for a day of fellowship on the water. Men's Breakfast, Women's Breakfast, and Women's Luncheon give smaller circles a chance to share a meal. The church also runs Homeless Outreach mornings that include feeding, prayer, and sharing the love of Jesus.
