A Tri-Lingual Parish on Smith Street in Elizabeth
On a quiet block just off Union Square in Elizabeth, New Jersey, a Roman Catholic parish has been keeping watch for more than a century and a half. Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary and St. Michael's Church sits at 52 Smith Street, its doors opening every day of the week to worshippers who speak English, Spanish, and French Creole. The parish describes itself as a community drawn from many walks of life, gathered around the sacraments and the rhythms of a church that has served the same neighborhood through waves of change.
The parish is unusually welcoming for a single congregation. Masses are celebrated in three languages, and the building's meeting spaces are designed to flex between worship, formation, and community gatherings. For anyone stepping through the doors for the first time, the church presents a simple invitation: there is a place here, whether one has been a churchgoer for decades or is walking in for the very first time.
From a German Parish on Union Square to a Three-Language Community
The story of Holy Rosary - St. Michael's reaches back further than most parishes in the city. St. Michael's was founded over 170 years ago by a community of German immigrants and became the second Roman Catholic parish in Elizabeth. For generations it served as the spiritual home of that founding community, rooted in the historic Union Square neighborhood that still surrounds the church today.
About 130 years after St. Michael's was established, the parish merged with Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Church. The two communities came together so that a single congregation could better serve the vibrant, diverse, and historic neighborhood around the square. Out of that union grew the present-day parish, which today thrives as a multilingual and multi-ethnic community offering Mass in English, Spanish, and French Creole.
The parish buildings reflect that long history of shared worship. Beautiful, multipurpose meeting spaces give the campus a fluid spiritual life, suited to a range of devotional occasions. Parishioners remember the brothers and sisters who came before them, and the present congregation continues to thank God for the blessings passed down through generations of Catholics in Elizabeth.
Mass Times Across the Week
The weekly Mass schedule is built around the parish's three language communities. On weekdays, the church offers several evening Masses designed to fit around work and family life. Monday, Tuesday, and Friday each include a 6:00 p.m. Mass in French Creole and a 7:00 p.m. Mass in Spanish. Thursday brings a 7:00 p.m. Mass in Spanish, and Wednesday gathers both French Creole and Spanish-speaking communities at 7:00 p.m.
Saturday evening opens the weekend liturgy with a 5:00 p.m. Mass in English, followed by a 6:30 p.m. Mass in Spanish. Sunday is the fullest day of the week, with four Masses running back to back. The day begins with an 8:30 a.m. Mass in Spanish, continues with the main 10:00 a.m. Mass in English, then an 11:30 a.m. Mass in Spanish, and closes with a 1:00 p.m. Mass in French Creole.
The same church therefore holds eight weekend Masses across two days, plus five weekday Masses spread across the working week. For visitors who cannot attend in person, the parish livestreams Mass on its YouTube channel, allowing members of the homebound community and those traveling to follow along.
Confession and Healing
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered every Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and every Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m., ahead of the morning Masses. The parish notes that private appointments for confession or last rites can be arranged by calling the rectory, so that anyone who needs to meet with a priest at another time is not left without a way to schedule one.
The Anointing of the Sick is a particular focus of the parish's pastoral care. According to the parish, the sacrament extends both to those suffering from acquired illness and to individuals at the point of death, for the purposes of spiritual healing, physical recovery, or final spiritual preparation. Only an ordained priest can minister the sacrament, and the parish encourages families to make arrangements with the rectory before the ailing person loses consciousness. When possible, those being anointed are also offered the chance to confess and to receive Holy Communion, a combination the parish calls the Sacrament of the Road.
To mark the sacrament's pastoral role, Holy Rosary - St. Michael's celebrates a special Healing Mass every third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., inviting anyone in need of prayer for physical or spiritual healing to attend.
Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation
The three Sacraments of Christian Initiation - Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist - are at the center of parish life. The parish teaches that through these sacraments, the faithful are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by Confirmation, and fed at the table of the Eucharist. Together they lay the foundation of every Christian life.
Holy Rosary - St. Michael's welcomes both families seeking to baptize a newborn and adults preparing for the complete Order of Christian Initiation. Arrangements for an infant baptism should be made at least two months in advance, and inquiries of any kind can be directed to the rectory. The parish's First Communion photos and Confirmation ceremonies, celebrated with the local bishop, are regular milestones of parish life and are shared in parish announcements.
Marriage Preparation
The Sacrament of Matrimony is described by the parish as reflecting the union of Jesus Christ and His Church. The lifelong trust and mutual support between a man and a woman, in the parish's teaching, naturally expresses faith in God, love for each other, and the gift of procreation. Citing Pope Francis's apostolic exhortation, The Joy of Love, the parish acknowledges both the satisfactions and the daily work involved in married friendship.
Couples preparing for the sacrament are asked to begin arrangements at least twelve months before the wedding date. Anyone inquiring about marriage preparation is invited to contact the rectory for resources and details.
The Tree of Life Memorial
Inside the church, near the sanctuary, stands one of the most distinctive features of Holy Rosary - St. Michael's: a raised wooden base shaped like a tree, several feet across, on which golden metallic plaques display the engraved names of beloved deceased members of the parish community. The Tree of Life, as it is called, incorporates commemorations in the form of leaves and stones of varying prominence, turning the memorial into a living sculpture that grows with the names of those remembered.
The Tree of Life is not just a quiet monument. At every Mass celebrated in the church, prayers are offered directly for the names engraved on it. The parish teaches that prayers for the faithful departed play a crucial role in the journey toward heaven, and welcomes families to add a name and a short remembrance for their own dearly beloved. The Tree of Life is, in a sense, woven into every liturgy of the parish.
The Parish Hall Across the Street
Just across the street from the church at 899 East Jersey Street, the parish operates a multipurpose hall available for private rental. The hall is suited for banquets, celebrations, and ceremonies of many kinds, and has hosted numerous gatherings over the years. Its location directly across from the church makes it convenient for parish families hosting receptions after baptisms, First Communions, weddings, and funerals. Reservations can be made at any time of year by calling the rectory.
Livestream, Giving, and Parish Life
For those who cannot attend in person, Mass is livestreamed on the parish's YouTube channel. Online giving is also available, with the parish accepting donations through PayPal, Clover, and Cash App. The parish invites contributors to support the church's life through their resources, their presence, and their prayers, noting that the community has welcomed worshipers from many walks of life across many years of change.
The rectory, located at the church at 52 Smith Street, is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and can be reached at (908) 354-2454 or by email at holyrsmc16@gmail.com. The parish also publishes weekly bulletins online for parishioners who wish to follow along with the prayers and announcements of the week.
Pastoral Leadership and Parish Ministries
The parish is currently served by Rev. Sebastian Valencia, who was appointed Parochial Vicar of the parish on December 1, 2025. The parish's sacramental life includes ongoing formation for children preparing for First Communion and Confirmation, with annual catechist dinners and Confirmation liturgies celebrated with the local bishop marking the rhythm of the formation year.
Parishioners gather throughout the year for the major celebrations of the liturgical year, including the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, and for pilgrimages organized in cooperation with neighboring communities. The parish also coordinates a Tree of Life commemoration program, supports marriage preparation for engaged couples, and offers the monthly Healing Mass for those in need of prayer for healing. Together these programs form the day-to-day pastoral fabric of a parish that sees itself, in its own words, as a Roman Catholic community drawn from many walks of life, joined in worship and in the sacraments.
