Grace on Methodist Drive
Garner United Methodist Church sits on Methodist Drive just off U.S. 70 in the heart of Garner, North Carolina. Across generations the congregation has been a steady spiritual home for families, individuals, and seekers in this Wake County community. The motto painted above the front doors, Love God. Love Others. Make Disciples., captures the church's simple purpose: to be a place where imperfect people meet a perfect Savior and lives are changed from the inside out.
Rooted in the United Methodist tradition, Garner UMC emphasizes God's grace, the power of community, and the call to serve others with compassion. Its welcome extends to every race, socioeconomic status, family makeup, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, mental and physical ability, and faith history. Each person, the church teaches, is created in the image of God and is of infinite worth.
Sunday Mornings in the Sanctuary
The Sunday gathering is the centerpiece of life at Garner UMC. Worship begins at 11:00 a.m. and is Christ-centered, welcoming, and anchored in Scripture. The service blends traditional Methodist roots with a contemporary spirit, led by a music team that includes organ, piano, and a praise band. Prayer, Scripture reading, communion, and biblical preaching that connects faith to everyday life fill the hour. Communion is offered regularly, and all are welcome at Christ's table.
For early risers, Holy Java runs from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. across from the Christian Life Center, a time for fellowship and good coffee before worship. Gathering music begins in the sanctuary at 10:50 a.m., offering a peaceful way to prepare hearts for the service. Sunday School classes meet at 10:00 a.m. for adults of all ages and stages.
For those who cannot be in the room, the service is livestreamed on the church's YouTube channel and on the church's worship page every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Past services are archived there as well. The church's quip about it is simple: online is good, but in-person is better.
Pastor Molly White and the Staff Team
Reverend Molly White serves as pastor of Garner United Methodist Church. An ordained Elder in The United Methodist Church, she brings experience from seven years at Hayes Barton UMC in Raleigh, where she served as Pastor of Spiritual Formation. She holds a Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School and is pursuing a Doctor of Ministry. Before entering ministry, she practiced law as a commercial real estate and land use attorney. Her passion is teaching, preaching, and leading Bible studies, and her extroverted nature makes her easy to find for members and newcomers alike.
Pastor White's commitment is to honest kindness in every relationship: transparency in the life of the church delivered with compassion, with the same honesty and kindness expected in return. Her personal journey through grief has shaped her theology, and her doctoral work focuses on spiritual care for those experiencing similar suffering.
A small staff carries out the daily ministry of the church. Meredith Bray directs the preschool. Jill Charville leads communications. Hanna Gattoni serves as Children and Family Ministries Director and as Safe Sanctuary Coordinator. Heather Ribar is the Youth Director. Jane McNeill plays piano, Bill McClure plays organ, and Richard Wall manages the facilities. Lay leaders fill out the leadership of the church across finance, trustees, nominations, worship, missions, the preschool board, and more.
A Place Built for Children and Families
Children are a visible part of worship at Garner UMC, not an afterthought. The PRAYground is an area at the front of the sanctuary where young children can play, pray, and participate in worship with quiet toys, books, and ribbons to wave during songs. Families are invited to sit in the pews just behind, where the youngest disciples can absorb what they see, hear, and feel.
Worship Our Way, or WOW, is the Sunday program for preschoolers through second graders. Children begin worship with their families and, after Time with Young Disciples, are invited to WOW for interactive, age-appropriate lessons connected to the day's scripture. On the first Sunday of each month, children stay in worship for communion.
Kingdom Kids meets two Wednesdays a month for kindergarten through fifth graders. The evening includes dinner, fellowship, and faith-filled fun, with science experiments, games, and crafts woven into the program.
For infants and parents who want a change of pace, the nursery in Room 213 is a self-service space. The worship service is livestreamed into the room so parents can meet their child's needs without missing the sermon. Comfortable gliders at the back of the sanctuary are also available for rocking or feeding during worship.
Youth in the Middle of Real Life
The youth ministry at Garner UMC treats teenagers as valued members of the church today, not the church of tomorrow. Heather Ribar directs a ministry that gathers middle and high school students in grades 6 through 12 on Sunday nights for fellowship, dinner, games, and meaningful conversations about faith and life. Annual Pilgrimage mission trips, youth retreats, and service projects are part of the rhythm. The program also serves college-age young adults through study, worship, service, and outreach.
Groups for Every Season
Small groups are the backbone of adult formation at Garner UMC. Sunday School classes meet at 10:00 a.m. for thoughtful discussion, scripture study, and community. Bible and book studies run throughout the year, including special Advent and Lenten series that draw both newcomers and longtime students.
Men of Faith gathers at 6:00 a.m. every Wednesday in the church library. It is a quiet hour for prayer, encouragement, accountability, and lifting up the church and the community. All men are welcome.
United Methodist Men is a fellowship of men who grow in faith, strengthen relationships, and serve through prayer and service projects. United Women in Faith gathers women for fellowship, mission projects, prayer, and study, supporting women, children, and families locally and globally.
Next steps for newcomers include baptism, where the church celebrates a public decision to follow Jesus, joining a group, volunteering, and giving. The church's teaching on baptism is that it makes visible a decision of the heart, and the community gathers to celebrate together.
Reaching Beyond the Building
Outreach is woven into the identity of Garner UMC. HOPE Ministries meets every Saturday and is an interfaith effort to come alongside neighbors experiencing housing challenges. Guests receive a cooked meal, a warm shower, clothing (as donations allow), encouragement, and compassion. Multiple churches have joined the effort, and what began as one church's ministry has become a wider witness.
Coffeehouse gathers adults with special needs on the third Friday of every month. Following the model of Resurrection Lutheran Church, the ministry centers each gathering around a drum circle, food, and engaging activities. Guests have come to lead parts of the evening themselves, leading the birthday song, praying, leading activities, or dancing, holding space for one another's gifts.
Back to School Bash is the church's largest annual outreach. On the second Saturday in August, Garner UMC distributes more than $30,000 of backpacks and school supplies to K-12 students. The indoor family event includes games, food, and community resources, with more than 1,200 students, 600 parents, and 200 volunteers taking part each year.
Throughout the school year, Garner UMC supports the teachers, staff, and students at Creech Road Elementary School with snacks for the student snack pantry and breakfasts and snacks for the teachers. In December, the church collects toys and gifts through a Giving Tree for Creech Road children and for HOPE friends. Year-round, bins by the elevator hold nonperishable food for Creech Road Elementary Snack Pantry, Garner Area Ministries, With Love from Jesus, and Community of Hope Ministries.
A Preschool Rooted in the Church
The Garner UMC Preschool has long been part of the church's ministry to young families. The program operates on the lower level of the church building, with hours from 9:20 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Meredith Bray leads the program, and the preschool can be reached at (919) 779-7563 or gumpreschool@gmail.com.
Visiting Garner UMC
Garner UMC welcomes visitors with a come-as-you-are spirit. The dress code ranges from jeans to button-downs; what matters most is being there. Parking is available on site and in nearby designated areas, with clearly marked accessible parking close to the main entrance. The preschool has its own parking area behind the building, and the hospitality team is ready to help anyone who needs a hand.
Visitor cards sit in the pews; filling one out and dropping it in the offering plate is the easiest way to be welcomed and contacted. Restrooms are near the sanctuary and include changing tables. Office hours run Monday through Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The main phone line is 919.772.2042 and the email is office@garnerumc.org.
A Wednesday service is also held at 6:00 p.m. for those whose week does not fit around a Sunday. Garner UMC's life and ministry is rooted in the conviction that the church is not a building but the people who gather together to worship, grow, and serve, a community where questions are welcome and faith becomes something lived, not just believed.
