A Southern Baptist Church at the Crossroads of Hazel Green
Flint River Church sits along Highway 231/431 North in Hazel Green, the northern stretch of Madison County that draws commuters, families, and a steady stream of new neighbors into northern Alabama. The address - 12945 Highway 231/431 N - anchors a ministry that fills its single campus with Sunday morning worship, children and student programs, weekday discipleship for adults, and a preschool called River Care. Two identical Sunday services at 9:30 and 11:00 AM make it easy for a household to choose its own pace, and each service is broadcast online for those who prefer to join from home.
The church describes itself in plain terms on its front door: "Find a place to belong at Flint River." That sentence sets the tone for what follows - a teaching ministry that builds its week around the Bible, around small groups, and around the next generation.
Sunday Mornings: Two Services, One Worship Center
Sunday is built around two in-person services in the Worship Center. Worship songs are led by a full band with lyrics on screens so newcomers can sing along without feeling lost. Pastors explain the Christian sacraments - baptism and communion - whenever they appear in the service, and a pastor preaches a Bible-based message, often illustrated with photos or short video clips. Services run about sixty minutes, and there is no expectation that visitors give money or sign anything.
The order of the morning is straightforward. Guests are welcomed at a Guest Services desk in the large, open foyer, where coffee is available and the way to RiverKids check-in is easy to find. Worship follows, then a sermon, then a response time. After the benediction there is time to pick up children, meet friends for lunch, or simply head home.
RiverKids: From Birth Through Fifth Grade
RiverKids is the umbrella for everything Flint River does with children on Sunday mornings. Programming runs at all three Sunday hours - 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 AM - so families can plug children into the hour that fits their own service preference.
Little RiverKids serves babies through Pre-K. At 9:30 the children gather in small groups with a consistent leader, play games, and hear the Bible story. At 11:00 they experience "Kid Style Worship" - singing with motions, learning a Bible verse, and watching Ollie the Owl tell the story on video - then return to small groups for a hands-on activity. The wing has an indoor playground used year-round.
RiverKids for first through fifth graders follows a similar rhythm, with small groups at 9:30 and large-group "Kids Worship" at 11:00. The leaders' goal, in their own words, is that "the Bible should never be boring, worship can be really loud, and discipleship happens best through relationships." Check-in happens at kiosks before service; parents receive a matching security tag that must be presented at pickup. Pre-registration through a digital form is available to speed the first visit.
Students: Middle School, High School, and Wednesday Nights
Flint River treats students - middle and high school - as one continuous ministry under Marcus Elliott. The goal is to "graduate students into a lifetime of following Jesus." Sunday morning Life Groups meet at 9:30 and 11:00 AM, and on Wednesday nights at 6:00 PM students fill the Student Center for worship, prayer, Bible teaching, and small groups. Doors open early so students can hang out before the meeting starts. The Student Ministry keeps an active presence on Instagram and Facebook at @FRStuMin.
Flint River College
College students and young adults have their own weekly gathering called Flint River College, meeting on Sundays at 11:00 AM. The group exists to help young adults "discover who we are and why we're here," and it hosts service events throughout the year. It is described by the church as a "home away from home" for students navigating the transition into adult life.
Life Groups: Sunday at 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 AM
Life Groups are the small-group backbone of the church. They meet in the same three Sunday time slots as the services - 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 AM - which means a family can attend a service and a Life Group in the same hour. The groups are pitched as Useful, Solid, Stronger, Active, Open, and Challenging: useful Bible teaching that travels into work and relationships; stable leaders and biblically centered conversations; intergenerational friendships; hands-on mission; open enrollment; and the kind of honest accountability that pushes people forward. A directory of current Life Groups is hosted on the church's online portal, and visitors can request help finding a match through a form.
Women's Ministry: Three Studies Around the Week
The women's ministry runs three ongoing studies that meet on different days and locations, all on the main campus.
Tuesday evenings at 6:00 PM in Room 235 ("River Street"), women walk through Joshua: Prepared & Purposed by LeAnn Newsom. The study frames Joshua's conquest as a picture of claiming an inheritance through trials and obedience.
Monday evenings at 6:00 PM in Modular A, the Solomon Says: Godly Counsel for Victorious Living study by Cheryl Gangl runs for ten weeks. Topics include honesty, generosity, time management, godly speech, and marriage.
Tuesday mornings at 9:00 AM in the Community Room, the Come Thirsty group works through The Lie You Don't Know You Believe by Jennie Allen, a seven-week journey into Matthew 4 and the lies that distort identity. Workbooks are available for purchase at the first session.
The Man Church and Transformed
The men's ministry is built around two pieces. The Man Church is the larger gathering - a vision "to release the church to disciple men in a way designed specifically for them." It opens with a kickoff event featuring dinner, a Men's Worship Band, and a guest speaker.
Transformed is the discipleship vehicle underneath it: a 40-week small-group journey that walks men through how the Holy Spirit and Scripture reshape the way they see the world. Transformed meets four times a week to fit different schedules - Sundays at 3:00 PM, Mondays at 6:00 PM, Tuesdays at 6:00 PM, and Wednesdays at 6:00 PM - each with its own pair of lay leaders.
River Care: Preschool and Mother's Day Out
River Care is the weekday education arm of the church. It runs a Mother's Day Out, Preschool, and Kindergarten Program on the Flint River campus, following the Madison County school schedule. The program exists as a distinct ministry with its own phone line (256-828-7883) and email address (rivercare@frbc.org), and its registration, tuition, and parent handbook are published online. River Care gives the church a daily weekday presence that extends well beyond Sunday mornings and ties young families to the congregation.
What Flint River Believes
Flint River is a member congregation of the Southern Baptist Convention. Its statement of faith lays out the classic evangelical, Baptist convictions in careful terms.
God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe, eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - three persons who are coequal and one God. Jesus is the Son of God, coequal with the Father and the Spirit, who lived a sinless life, died on the cross as the perfect sacrifice for sin, rose again after three days, ascended to heaven, and will return to reign as King. The Holy Spirit indwells every Christian from salvation, gives spiritual gifts, and guides believers into truth. The Bible is God's Word, written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Spirit and useful as the supreme source of truth for belief and living.
Human beings are made in God's image but marred by an attitude of disobedience called sin, which separates people from God. Salvation is a free gift received by turning from self-rule and trusting in Jesus Christ; eternal life begins the moment a person receives Christ by faith. Heaven and hell are real, eternal destinations determined by a person's relationship with Christ. Baptism is a public symbol of the believer's identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection and is a step of obedience after salvation.
The church also holds to a distinctive Baptist principle of Christian liberty: essential beliefs call for unity, but on non-essentials believers are free to differ without judgment, a posture the church grounds in Romans 14 and 1 Corinthians 10.
Leadership
The pastoral team is led by Dr. Steve Bell, the Senior Pastor. Pat Merchant serves as Worship Pastor and Administrator. Johnny Collins is the Missions Pastor; Marcus Elliott is the Student Pastor; Dustin McLemore is the Children's Pastor; Kate Montgomery leads preschool ministry as Preschool Minister; and Bart Teel serves as Discipleship Pastor. Duane Allen is the Worship Ministry Associate. Ministry Assistants Benita Blake and Melanie Hartwig and IT Administrator Mike Ellis round out the staff team.
Giving and Staying Connected
Giving is offered in three ways: online through a secure portal that handles one-time and recurring gifts; by text message to (844) 748-4376; and by cash or check placed in the giving boxes in the Worship Center during services. Messages are preached live each Sunday and archived on the church's media page, where visitors can watch or listen to weeks of sermons by Steve Bell and Bart Teel. A daily email devotion drawn from the One Year Chronological Bible reading plan is offered to anyone who wants to keep the Scripture on the table throughout the week.
Flint River maintains a Facebook page and an Instagram account for its student ministry. The church's main phone number is 256-828-3692, and general questions can be emailed to life@frbc.org.
