First United Methodist Church of Houston: A 1839 Congregation in the Heart of Downtown

Methodist Church in Houston, Texas

First Houston United Methodist Church is a historic downtown Houston congregation founded in 1839 by a missionary responding to Colonel William Barrett Travis's plea for Methodist pastors in the new Texas Republic. The church is known for its dual Sunday worship tradition - a long-standing traditional service and an African-flavored Altar Umoja service with elements in Swahili and French - and for an extensive downtown outreach led by Lifeline to the Homeless.

About First United Methodist Church

From the Republic of Texas to Downtown Houston

When Colonel William Barrett Travis wrote from the new Texas Republic to the General Conference of the Methodist Church, asking for pastors for the young country, the denomination answered by sending three missionaries. One of them founded First Methodist Houston in 1839. Almost two centuries later, the congregation still gathers at 1320 Main Street, in the heart of downtown, and still lives out its calling to put God's love into action.

Today the church is known for something that would have surprised those nineteenth-century missionaries: a worship life that moves between a long-standing traditional service and a Sunday-morning African-flavored gathering called Altar Umoja, with congregational singing in Swahili and French. Around that core, the congregation has built one of the most far-reaching downtown outreach ministries in Houston, anchored by Lifeline to the Homeless, the free Main Street Indoor Park for young children, and partnerships that reach as far as Honduras.

A Methodist Outpost Born of the Texas Republic

First Methodist Houston is the oldest Methodist congregation in Houston and one of the oldest continuously worshiping communities in the city. The story begins with Travis's letter to the General Conference, requesting ministers for the new republic. The church responded by assigning three missionaries to the region, and one of them established this congregation in 1839. Through the generations that followed, First Methodist Houston planted many of the churches and ministries that today make up United Methodism across Texas, working to embody the prayer that God's will "be done on earth as it is in heaven."

That outward, multiplying spirit is still visible in the church's own mission statement: "First Houston United Methodist Church exists to transform lives and communities by putting God's love into action." The congregation organizes its life around five practices: Gather (worshiping together as one body), Get Connected (building meaningful relationships in Christ), Grow (deepening faith through study and discipleship), Go (serving and sharing God's love in the community and the world), and Give (offering time, talents, and resources to God's mission).

Two Sunday Worship Traditions

Worship at First Methodist Houston is built around two very different Sunday services that share the same building.

Traditional Worship Service

The Traditional service meets at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary each Sunday. It blends the richness of Methodist liturgical practice with contemporary elements. A Christ-centered message anchors the service, and a choir the church describes as "world renowned" leads congregational singing. Members of all ages and backgrounds gather there each week to worship and praise God. The service is livestreamed on YouTube, with a digital Sunday Bulletin and previous sermons available through the church's YouTube channel.

Altar Umoja African Worship Service

The Altar Umoja service gathers at 11:30 AM on the second floor, with fellowship - called "swallowship" - and food beginning at 11:30 and worship starting at noon. The service celebrates the diversity of God's people through African expressions of praise and includes worship in Swahili and French. Translation devices are available on request. On the first Sunday of each month, the two services merge into one combined gathering at 11:00 AM, where the congregation worships and takes Communion together. Altar Umoja is also livestreamed on YouTube and Facebook.

A Midweek Pause in the Chapel

For those who live, work, or visit downtown, the Wednesday Prayer Service offers a half-hour reset at the heart of the workweek. Held at 12:00 PM in the Bintliff Chapel, the service combines prayer, Communion, and a brief devotional. Communion is open to everyone who joins.

Sunday School for Every Age

First Methodist Houston has long taken seriously the Methodist tradition of Christian education. Adult Sunday School begins with fellowship at 9:30 AM, gathers as a whole at 9:50 in the fourth-floor meeting room, and dismisses into individual classes at about 10:00 AM. The current class lineup covers nearly every stage of life:

  • Adelphi - mixed ages, lecture and discussion of the Old and New Testaments.
  • Alpha and Omega - 30s through 80s, varying Bible study formats.
  • Bible Discovery - 50s and up, scripture reading and discussion.
  • Encouraging Word - 40s through 60s, book reviews.
  • Fidelis - 40 and up, lecture and Bible study.
  • Kairos - empty nesters and beyond, navigating the new season.
  • LOGOS - mostly 65 and up, lecture format.
  • Millennials Plus - 30 and up, discussion and lecture.
  • One in the Lord - mostly 50 and up, discussion and lecture.
  • Truth Seekers - retirement age, discussion format.
  • Women of the Word - women of all ages, scripture and life application.
  • Young Adults - ages 18 to 30, life discussion and weekly check-ins.

Children, Students, and the Indoor Park

First Kids, the church's name for its children's ministry, is built around safe, fun, age-appropriate spaces for the youngest members of the congregation.

Early Childhood Care is available for infants through Pre-K on the first floor from 9:45 AM to 12:00 PM, covering Sunday School and the entire worship hour. Elementary Sunday School runs from 9:45 to 10:55 AM on the first floor, with age-appropriate lessons, games, crafts, and prayer. After the Time for Children in worship, kindergartners through fourth graders are dismissed to Kids' Church on the first floor from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM, where they engage in worship through music and hands-on activities. On the first Sunday of each month, families stay together in worship and take Communion.

First Students, the youth ministry for grades 5 through 12, meets for Sunday School on the sixth floor from 9:45 to 10:55 AM, combining Bible study, discussion, fellowship, and a meal before students head into worship.

The Main Street Indoor Park is the unusual jewel of the family ministry. Designed for children ages 5 and under, it is a free, clean, temperature-controlled indoor playground where downtown families and caregivers can connect while little ones play. The park is open Tuesday through Thursday from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Visitors sign in at the front desk, with at least one adult required for every four children, and group visits are capped at ten. Free parking is available at the corner of Travis and Polk in spaces marked RESERVED. The park is not available for private rentals or parties.

Vacation Bible Camp rounds out the summer. Held each July for children ages 5 through 12, the camp runs Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and features Bible stories, creative crafts, cultural exploration, uplifting songs, games, on-campus events, and an off-site field trip. Youth 13 and older and other adults are welcome to serve as leaders and support volunteers. Scholarships can be requested through the church office.

Music That Anchors the Sanctuary

The Music Ministry exists to glorify God through music, creating worship experiences that inspire and encourage the congregation. The choir rehearses Sundays from 9:00 to 11:00 AM and sings in worship each week. The music staff includes an organist and a pianist in addition to the Director of Worship. Beyond Sunday mornings, the choir participates in special services and seasonal celebrations, offering powerful expressions of faith through song.

Lifeline to the Homeless

Lifeline to the Homeless is the church's flagship outreach ministry and the place where First Methodist Houston's downtown calling is most visible. Operating as an extension ministry of the church, Lifeline serves the transient population living primarily in the downtown area, providing food, clothing, and dignity with kindness and love. The ministry also distributes Metro bus cards for written appointments, specific job-related clothing, and referrals to other agencies - the kinds of practical boosts that help someone get back on their feet.

The numbers tell part of the story. Lifeline distributes roughly 460 sack lunches per month, supported by about $3,000 each month in food and water purchases. Clients can visit on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 9:00 AM, where they are also given between six and eight bags of groceries each week, plus a monthly grocery bag. About 95 percent of the clients served are men. Volunteers greet clients at the desk, pray and minister with them, make sack lunches, sort donations, and serve as mentors.

Donations are crucial. Men's new underwear and socks, gently used men's T-shirts and tennis shoes, backpacks, reading glasses, women's hygiene items, body wash, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoo, disposable razors, and blankets are all on the list. Soups, chili, mac and cheese, rice, pasta, peanut butter, canned meats, oatmeal, and canned fruits and vegetables stock the pantry. A monthly First Sunday Food and Supply drive focuses the congregation's giving, and an Amazon Wishlist keeps the most-needed items visible.

More Than Lunch: The Household Assistance Program

For families who could use a hand with groceries and household basics, the Monthly Household Assistance Program offers a confidential online form for selecting needed items - fresh produce, proteins, pantry staples, diapers, feminine hygiene items, paper goods, and cleaning supplies. Requests submitted by Tuesday are fulfilled the same week, packed in a custom box, and made available for pick-up the following Sunday. Families may request assistance once a month, subject to availability.

Partners Across the City and Beyond

First Methodist Houston extends its mission through several long-standing partnerships. Neighbors in Action works with families in the Port Houston area and surrounding communities to transform lives through spiritual growth, education, and meeting basic needs. Quillian Center is a partner organization focused on community and family programs. Wesley Community Center, The Sanctuary Foster Care, Iglesia Generaciones, Westchase Neighborhood School, West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM), and Clarewood House round out the local partnerships. Camino Global extends the church's reach internationally with mission engagement in Honduras.

Caring for One Another

Congregational Care at First Methodist Houston is built around three named ministries. Stephen Ministry pairs trained lay caregivers - "Stephen Ministers" - with people going through a difficult time: those who are lonely, depressed, separated or divorced, homebound, hospitalized, grieving, dying, struggling financially, new to the church, or wrestling with their faith. A Stephen Minister meets weekly, listens, offers resources and referrals, prays, and offers Christian love and support. Homebound Ministry brings a listening ear and a calming, Christ-centered presence to those who cannot easily come to the building. Prayer Ministry sustains the congregation's prayer life through weekly prayer teams, the Bintliff Chapel kept open for prayer during regular church hours, and a prayer request correspondence team. Hospital Visits are coordinated through the church office, with both clergy and lay members available to visit and pray.

Walk to Emmaus

Walk to Emmaus is a 72-hour spiritual retreat developed by The Upper Room, a United Methodist ministry, and adapted from the Roman Catholic Cursillo movement. It develops Christian disciples and leaders, renewing faith and strengthening local church participation. First Methodist Houston regularly sends members to the retreat and welcomes returning pilgrims into leadership.

Women and Men, Faith and Fellowship

Women's Ministry weaves together several groups. United Women in Faith, a spiritual-development and service organization, meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 10:30 AM in the Lifeline Room. DIVAS (Divinely Inspired, Victorious, and Serving) is a Monday-evening small group that studies the Bible and contemporary authors and is currently partnered with Lockhart Elementary. Sewing Connection meets Tuesdays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on the second floor. The Women's Ministry Book Club meets on the first Wednesday evening of each month in members' homes, with in-depth study and a focus on service. Prayer Shawl Ministry knits and crochets shawls to be blessed and shared with people in the community who could use extra comfort. Women of the Word Sunday School meets in Room 407. A monthly Moms Night Out offers mothers a relaxed evening of fellowship and encouragement.

Men's Ministry anchors two rhythms. The Thursday Bible Study at 12:00 PM offers a midweek spiritual check-in and prayer, and a Monthly Young Men's Gathering creates room for the next cohort to connect and sharpen one another.

Life Events: Baptisms, Weddings, Funerals

The church walks with members through the milestones. Baptism, the congregation teaches, is the ordinary means of rebirth and initiation into the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and is offered to persons of any age by sprinkling, immersion, or pouring. Weddings are open to both members and non-members, with the church describing its ministry as one that "treats you as one of our own." Funerals begin with a conversation with one of the pastors. A columbarium surrounded by a garden offers a sacred place for the remains of members, "a great cloud of witnesses" cheering on those still on the journey.

What First Methodist Believes

The United Methodist Church is a global family of roughly one million members worshiping in more than 39,460 congregations. First Methodist Houston describes God as Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and affirms the core faith values held by the universal Christian church. The congregation confesses that Jesus is both human and divine, that he is Savior and Lord, and that the Holy Spirit comforts, convicts, and empowers. The Bible is the primary authority for faith and practice. The church recognizes two sacraments in which Christ himself participated: Baptism and the Lord's Supper. Baptism is offered to people of any age, and Communion is open to all who love Christ, repent of their sin, and seek to live in peace with one another.
