Glorifying God by Making Disciples
First Southern Baptist Church of Augusta stands on Ohio Street in the small Kansas town of Augusta, a brick-and-brick community of believers committed to a single calling: making transformed disciples who connect, grow, serve, and go. The church's stated mission shapes everything from the order of Sunday morning to the Wednesday Bible study to the worship services held at a local nursing home. "Who is the Church?" the congregation answers. "We are!"
Pastor Trevor Rosine leads the church alongside a team of deacons - Brent Brown, Mark McCollom, Jeremy McClanahan, and Randy Wolf - and Administrative Assistant Cindy Beard. Their doctrinal foundation is the 2000 Baptist Faith and Message.
Sunday Mornings on Ohio Street
Sunday School begins at 9:45 AM, with classes available for every age from birth through senior adult. A nursery welcomes children from birth through age 3 during both the Sunday School hour and the worship hour. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade meet in their own Kids class, students in sixth through twelfth grade gather for the Youth class, and adults choose between two classes.
At 11 AM the worship service begins. The dress code is whatever a guest is comfortable wearing - cowboy boots, a t-shirt, or a suit and tie all show up side by side. Music is a blend of traditional hymns and more recent songs, led by a small praise team accompanied by a piano, with a goal of leading in a culturally relevant style that honors God. Preaching is verse-by-verse expository, and sermons are available on the church's podcast at augustafsbc.podbean.com.
Wednesday Nights Around the Word
Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM bring the church back together for separate men's and women's Bible studies. Topics range across theology, church history, and the everyday struggles of Christian living. The studies give the Augusta congregation a midweek touchpoint beyond Sunday worship.
Kids, Youth, and Young Believers
First Southern gives particular attention to the next generation. The Kids Ministry focuses on helping children learn about God, love God, and live for God in all they do. The Youth Group welcomes any student from sixth through twelfth grade and meets during the Sunday School hour at 9:45 AM, with an open invitation: come with questions, come with doubts, come broken, come seeking - come as you are.
Reaching Beyond the Walls at LakePoint
Every Sunday at 10 AM, a group from First Southern crosses town to lead a worship service for the residents of LakePoint Nursing Home. The church describes it as a blessing to serve brothers and sisters in Christ who can no longer easily come to the building on Ohio Street.
A Covenant of Believers
Members of First Southern affirm a written Membership Covenant that ties the church together. By God's grace they gather as those who have repented and believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, pledging to delight in His Word, to pursue holiness, and to worship together regularly. They commit to love one another by giving up personal preferences for the sake of unity, praying for each other, and supporting the leadership entrusted to shepherd the body. They also commit to making disciples by proclaiming the gospel, teaching all Christ commanded, and contributing cheerfully to the work of the church, the needs of neighbors, and the spread of the gospel to all nations.
