First Presbyterian Church: Danville's Oldest Congregation on Main Street

Presbyterian/Reformed Church in Danville, Virginia

First Presbyterian Church is the oldest organized congregation in Danville, Virginia, founded in 1826 and housed in a 1912 sanctuary on Main Street. The church runs a weekly Saturday lunch for neighbors, a Day School, traditional Sunday worship, and an active youth and music ministry alongside a network of local and global mission partners.

About First Presbyterian Church

A Main Street Congregation with Two Centuries Behind It

First Presbyterian Church sits on the north end of Main Street in Danville, Virginia, just west of the River District and a step away from the Sutherlin Mansion and Museum. The columned sanctuary has stood on that block since 1912, with the adjoining office building added in 1961, and the congregation itself dates to 1826, when it became the first organized church in what would become the city of Danville. Almost two hundred years later, the same address remains the spiritual and civic anchor for a congregation that prides itself on knowing its neighbors by name and showing up for them in body as well as in spirit.

The church describes its calling with two short phrases. The long-standing motto, "To Know Christ and Make Him Known," sits beside a newer vision statement: purposely placed for nourishing people in body, mind, and spirit to live lives of restoration and reconciliation in a community finding the Way. Those words shape everything from the order of Sunday worship to the Saturday lunch that opens its doors to anyone who walks in hungry.

Sunday Worship in the Sanctuary

Worship is held at 11:00 AM on Sunday in the sanctuary at 937 Main Street. One combined service gathers the congregation around a traditional liturgy of music, prayer, Scripture reading, and sermon. Greeters are posted to help newcomers find their way, and the doors on either side of the building are open: visitors can enter from the columned Main Street side or from the Sutherlin Avenue side.

Inside, members and guests dress in everything from shorts and polo shirts to suits and dresses. The choir leads congregational singing from the chancel, and a children's message - the "Time for Young Disciples" - is offered during the service. After the children's sermon, children in kindergarten through fifth grade leave worship with their leaders for their own Sunday school time. Communion is observed on the first Sunday of each month (and on special days such as Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve), and the communion table is open to all who trust in Christ.

The service is also carried online. Recordings of recent sermons, going back many years, are linked from the church's sermon archive, and worship is livestreamed on the church's YouTube channel for those unable to be present.

Arriving on Sunday: Parking, Childcare, and the Sunday School Hour

The Sunday morning rhythm begins well before the eleven o'clock service. Nursery care opens at 9:30 AM and runs through 12:30 PM in the Day School wing of the building, where greeters will happily direct parents. Sunday school classes for youth and adults meet throughout the building at 9:45 AM:

  • Adults: The Outlook Class, a lecture-and-discussion group, gathers in Room 322, the upstairs room behind the sanctuary.
  • Early Childhood: Room 202 in the Day School wing, entered through the Sutherlin Avenue entrance.
  • Middle and High School: Room 302 in the upstairs Day School wing, also entered from Sutherlin Avenue.
  • Elementary (K-5): Children join their families in worship first and move to their own class after the children's sermon.

Parking is easy to come by. Spaces line Main Street, Sutherlin Avenue, and the surrounding neighborhood, and additional parking is available at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History next door. Handicap parking is reserved on Sutherlin Avenue and in a small lot off Chestnut Street at the junction with Pine Street. Anyone needing a hand finding any of them can call the church office in advance at (434) 792-7822.

The Saturday Lunch Ministry: Nourishing the Neighborhood

For more than twenty years, the church's flagship outreach has been its Saturday Lunch Ministry, a weekly free meal offered to anyone in the community. Doors open at 11:00 AM with an optional Bible study, and a hot lunch is served from 11:30 AM to 12:00 noon. There is no charge and no proof of need required; on a typical Saturday the church feeds between seventy and one hundred neighbors.

The Saturday menu varies from week to week, and a full traditional holiday meal is served the Saturday before Thanksgiving. On the second and third Saturdays of each month the kitchen is joined by partners from the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Westover Baptist Church, and Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church. Members of First Presbyterian, including an assigned elder, cover the remaining Saturdays. Funding comes from the church's Mission Committee, individual donations, gifts from other congregations, and a grant from the Presbytery. Volunteers are always welcome.

The lunch is more than a meal. Each guest receives an invitation to join the church on Sunday, and the Saturday gathering has become a place where relationships between the congregation and the wider Danville community are built week by week.

Music: Choir, Handbells, and a Sanctuary Built to Sing In

Music is woven through the life of First Presbyterian. The chancel choir rehearses on Thursday afternoons from 5:00 to 6:00 PM and again on Sunday mornings from 10:15 to 10:50 AM, leading worship each Sunday and adding extra anthems for Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. The handbell choir rehearses Tuesday afternoons from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, September through May. Both choirs welcome high schoolers, college students, and adults, and beginners are encouraged to join.

Beyond the adult choirs, the music ministry reaches into the Day School, where the Director of Music Ministries teaches weekly early-childhood music classes for the school's two-, three-, and four-year-olds. The director also serves on the board of the Danville Area Choral Arts Society (DACAS), volunteers with the Averett University Cougar Band, and plays co-principal flute in the Danville Symphony Orchestra (DSO).

Children, Youth, and the First Presbyterian Day School

The church has a place for every age from birth through graduation.

Children: Nursery care is offered every Sunday morning from 9:30 to 12:30 and during Wednesday evening events. Children's Sunday school for kindergarten through fifth grade meets during the second half of the worship hour, after the children's sermon. A week of Vacation Bible School is held each summer, with middle and high school youth often serving as leaders and helpers.

Youth: The FPC Youth group meets at 6:00 PM on Wednesdays during the school year, gathering in the church office building and rotating to members' homes during the summer. Sunday school for youth meets at 9:45 AM in Room 112. The annual rhythm includes a mission trip with Son Servants (past trips have gone to West Virginia, Jamaica, Chattanooga, and New Orleans), local service projects such as volunteering at God's Storehouse and packing meals for kids in Washington, D.C., and plenty of recreational outings - hiking, ice skating, skiing, geocaching, camping, fishing, and outdoor movie nights.

First Presbyterian Day School: Housed in the church's Sutherlin Avenue wing, the Day School has offered a Christian preschool for more than sixty years. Classrooms are organized by age from six months through four years, with Parents' Morning Out for the youngest children and three- and four-year-old classes preparing students for kindergarten. The four-year-old classroom uses a portion of the ABEKA curriculum, with a focus on letter sounds and blends, number recognition, and handwriting. Weekly chapel, show-and-tell, music class, and family events like Grandparents' Day and an end-of-year picnic round out the program. The school collects food for God's Storehouse and rides in the Trike-A-Thon for St. Jude's as part of its charitable work.

Wednesday Nights: Supper and Youth

During the fall months the church hosts a series of Wednesday Night Suppers in the fellowship hall. Teams of church members take turns cooking, and the evenings pair the meal with a program - youth mission updates, a visit from a missionary partner, financial stewardship teaching, an Advent music service, or an Advent lesson and carol sing. The suppers are scheduled roughly twice a month from October through December and are open to everyone in the church family and the wider community.

Presbyterian Women and Presbyterian Men

Fellowship at First Presbyterian is organized in part through its two denominational groups.

Presbyterian Women gathers in circles for Bible study, fellowship, and service. The daytime circle meets on the first Monday of each month at 12:30 PM in Room 108 on the office side of the building, and an evening circle rotates among members' homes throughout the year.

Presbyterian Men meets on the third Saturday of each month at 8:00 AM in the Westminster classroom on the office side of the building. The morning starts with Bible study, moves into breakfast, and closes with the kind of unhurried conversation that builds long friendships. New faces are always welcome.

Mission Partners: Local, Regional, and Global

The Missions Committee describes the congregation as "the sent people of Jesus" and backs that identity with both hands-on service and financial support.

Local partners include God's Storehouse, Habitat for Humanity, House of Hope, the Salvation Army, God's Pit Crew, and Good News Jail and Prison Ministry. The church also takes an annual turn with the Danville Area CROP Hunger Walk, held the first Sunday of October at 3:00 PM at Ballou Park. The Missions Committee sponsors the FPC team; most of the funds raised go to Church World Service, with roughly a quarter to a third returned to God's Storehouse to fight hunger in the immediate area. The annual Marie Louise Crane Golden Shoe Award honors the team that best reflects the spirit of one of the church's long-time leaders who helped start the Danville walk.

Global partners supported by the church include missionaries and ministries serving in some of the most under-resourced places in the world: Jonna Reeder with Paracletes; Paul and Reinhild Sydnor with the International Association for Refugees; Bill and Wanda Perrow with the Open Arms Foundation; Don and Martha Wehmeyer with the Outreach Foundation and Antioch Partners; Ian and Stephanie Frazier with VIA; Bradley Long with Frontier Fellowship; Matthew and Theresa Lee with Wycliffe Bible Translation; Christ for the Island World; and the Abukloi School in the Peaks of the Presbytery. Many of these partners visit the congregation over the course of the year to share stories from the field.

The church also owns an apartment house that serves as a ministry in its own right, and it has a long history of semi-annual clothing donations, an Angel Tree program, gifts to local non-profit organizations, and disaster relief work.

What the Church Believes

The 2016 Vision Study laid out the convictions that hold the congregation together. Members affirm the historic Christian core: faith in one God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; the reality of sin and the need of a Savior; the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for our sins; the grace by which God makes us right; and the lordship of Jesus Christ seated at the right hand of the Father. From that foundation the church commits itself to mission and service, obeying the Great Commission by making disciples of all nations, seeking out those who do not know Christ and those not connected to a church family in the community.

Discipleship is understood as a lifelong process. Members commit to participating in the life and worship of the church, to stewardship of time, talents, and treasure, to practicing the spiritual disciplines of prayer, study, contemplation, and fellowship, and to intentional loyalty that protects the unity Christ sought for his followers. Diversity in gender, age, cultural background, and world view is named as something that enriches worship and strengthens the community.

That belief shows up in concrete ways. The Vision Study named the church's location - at the center of transition between an abandoned downtown and a revitalizing River District, between "millionaires' row" and "extreme poverty," beside the Sutherlin Mansion and racial tension - as a call to a ministry of reconciliation. The Saturday Lunch Ministry, the Day School scholarships underwritten for children from low-income families, and the relationships built with community partners are all part of what the congregation means when it says it is "purposely placed."

Weddings, Funerals, and Pastoral Care

The sanctuary and fellowship hall host both weddings and funerals for members and, by arrangement, for others in the community. Couples and families interested in a wedding at First Presbyterian can request the Wedding Policy from the church office by calling (434) 792-7822 or emailing admin@fpcdanville.com. Pastoral care needs - including weddings, funerals, and home or hospital visits - are coordinated through Jackson Weller, Minister of Discipleship, who can be reached at jackson@fpcdanville.com.

Visiting First Presbyterian

The church sits next door to the Sutherlin Mansion and Museum at 937 Main Street, a few blocks west of downtown Danville. From Main Street the columned entrance is hard to miss; from Sutherlin Avenue, the office and Day School entrances are equally welcoming. Greeters are on hand on Sunday mornings to point first-time visitors toward the nursery, the sanctuary, or their Sunday school class of choice. Children are welcome in worship, and dress is "comfortably you." Communion is open to all who trust in Christ.

Anyone who wants a sense of the congregation before arriving is welcome to listen to recent sermons or watch the livestream on the church's YouTube channel. Weekly bulletins going back to 2016 and a monthly newsletter archive going back to the same year are available online for a glimpse of the rhythm of the year. Questions about anything - Sunday school, the Day School, youth, music, weddings, or mission work - can be directed to the church office at (434) 792-7822 or to admin@fpcdanville.com.
