On Washington Street in Whitman, the First Congregational Church has long been a familiar landmark - a white-steepled New England Congregational house of worship whose motto, "Sharing God's Light and Love with the World," captures the spirit of a small congregation that opens wide to its town. A recent steeple lighting renewed that presence, and each autumn the church's Pumpkin Patch sets up in the same yard where generations of Whitman's children have picked out their jack-o'-lanterns.
Sunday Mornings at Ten
Worship is held every Sunday at 10:00 AM, with a fellowship hour following at 11:00 AM in Fellowship Hall. There, coffee, conversation, and refreshments give the congregation a relaxed space to catch up with one another and meet first-time visitors. Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of every month during worship, and all are welcome at the table. The building is wheelchair accessible, and the church's About page greets newcomers with the words, "Wherever you are on life's journey, you are welcome here."
Reverend Patricia Berry
The congregation is served by Reverend Patricia Berry, whose recent installation was one of the milestones the church has marked publicly. Reverend Berry can be reached directly for prayer, support, or pastoral care at 508.443.1725 or revpatriciaberry@gmail.com. The main church office can be reached at 781.447.5557 or uccwhitman@gmail.com.
A Pumpkin Patch and a Fall Festival
Each autumn, the church's Pumpkin Patch transforms its grounds into a seasonal gathering place. Pumpkins in every size, shape, and color go on sale, drawing families from across Whitman who come for the simple pleasure of choosing the right pumpkin. Held on the Saturday before Membership Sunday, the Fall Festival runs from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM with a rain date built in, and turns the grounds into a community celebration. A monthly Pancake Breakfast and a "Sandwich Generation" workshop for those caring for both grown children and aging parents round out the ways the church shows up for Whitman throughout the year.
Weekly Rhythms and the Wider Town
Monday mornings bring Chair Yoga to the church from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, a $5 drop-in class open to the public - one of the ways the Fellowship Hall serves the wider town beyond Sunday mornings. The church has also hosted a beloved Blessing of the Animals service, covered by the local Enterprise, and a community Memorial Day observance on its grounds.
Weddings, Baptisms, Funerals, and Rentals
The sanctuary hosts weddings, baptisms, and funerals for those who wish to mark life's milestones in a Congregational setting. The Fellowship Hall is also available for meetings, functions, and family events, with inquiries handled through the main office.
Becoming a Member
For those ready to put down roots, the church offers a clear path to membership. Exploring Membership classes meet following worship on selected Sundays, leading to Membership Sunday, when new members are formally received into the congregation.
A Weekly Newsletter and Online Giving
A weekly newsletter keeps the wider circle of friends and members informed about upcoming events, programs, and prayer needs; those who would like to receive it are invited to contact the church. Donations can be made online through the church's secure giving portal, and contributions may be designated in memory or in honor of a loved one as a meaningful way to celebrate a life while supporting the church's ongoing work. Gifts are tax-deductible.
