El Morro Church sits in Baywood-Los Osos, a coastal community on the edge of San Luis Obispo County, and tells visitors it exists "for the love of God and for the people of the Coast." The church meets on Sunday mornings at a single location on Santa Ysabel Avenue, and its mission distills to three phrases: extending the Love of Christ, reaching people for Christ, and growing in the image of Christ. Affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene, El Morro Church holds to the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition and welcomes anyone curious about faith alongside longtime members, gathering in a laid-back, family-style atmosphere that begins with coffee at the Welcome Center.
What the Church Holds to
As part of the Church of the Nazarene, El Morro Church affirms a historic set of Articles of Faith. Members believe in one God who reveals himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; in Jesus Christ as fully God and fully man, whose death and resurrection make salvation possible; and in the Holy Spirit who brings people to faith and empowers growth. The Bible is treated as the authoritative Word of God, and salvation is understood as a free gift received through faith in Christ.
The church also teaches that believers are called to repentance, justification by faith, and a lifelong process of sanctification, what the Nazarene tradition often calls entire sanctification, or Lordship. Baptism and the Lord's Supper are observed as acts of obedience. Members look for the return of Christ, affirm God's judgment and its eternal consequences, and trust in God's power to heal, including through medical means.
Beyond doctrine, El Morro Church describes its culture in ten commitments. Christ is central; the community is hungry for God's presence. Prayer is treated as a priority, grace is a daily reality, and lost people matter. The congregation aims to be culturally connected, to move people beyond salvation into a fully devoted life, and to put Scripture into practice. Members expect to grow more comfortable with being uncomfortable, and they live as a community devoted to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, prayer, and shared generosity.
Sunday Mornings at 10:00
A single Sunday service brings the church together at 10:00 AM at 1480 Santa Ysabel Avenue in Los Osos. Each week the gathering includes worship through music, a message from Scripture, prayer, and a few announcements. Three markers shape the gathering: friendly people who offer a warm welcome, engaging music that leads worshipers closer to God, and biblical teaching that is practical and relevant.
The dress code is intentionally relaxed. First-time guests are invited to stop by the Welcome Center after the service to introduce themselves; a free coffee is part of the welcome. Services can be watched through the church's livestream, and an archive of recent sermons is available online throughout the week.
A Place Where Children Belong
Children's Ministry begins at the door. Nursery care is offered for infants through age three in the inner courtyard, directly across from the church lobby and next to the church office. For older children, the Children's Center hosts classes for preschool through fifth grade during the same 10:00 AM hour. The church describes the environment as safe, loving, and fun, and seeks to partner with parents in laying a strong spiritual foundation, teaching biblical truth, and fostering a personal relationship with Jesus.
Whether a child is coming for the first time or has been part of the church for years, teachers and volunteers greet them with joy, love, and encouragement.
EPIC Youth on Sunday Nights
Middle and high school students gather for EPIC, a weekly youth ministry held on Sunday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 PM in the Student Center. EPIC mixes fun, food, friendship, worship, and Bible study, and youth leaders describe the group as friendly, encouraging, and deeply loved. On the last EPIC night of each month, the schedule shifts to "Something Else," a special on- or off-campus activity designed as a natural way to invite friends along.
The ministry anchors itself in Luke 10:27: loving God with heart, soul, strength, and mind, and loving neighbors as oneself.
A Four-Step Growth Track
For adults who want to grow deeper, the Growth Track is the church's structured pathway from first connection to a lifetime of mission. It moves through four stages. "Belonging" is a two-week introduction that walks newcomers through who El Morro Church is, what it believes, and what membership means, including its Nazarene heritage and Covenant of Christian Character. "101, The Journey," is an eight-week foundation covering assurance of salvation, prayer and the Word, the Spirit-filled life, obedience, witness, and holiness. "201, Discovering Spiritual Maturity," is a six-week journey into devotional Bible study, prayer rhythms, grace, sanctification, and accountability. "301, Discovering My Ministry," is a five-week class that helps members identify their shape, made up of spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experience, through trial serving and shadowing. Finally, "401, Discovering My Mission," is a four-week course that equips members to share their faith, plan outreach, and live missionally where they live, learn, work, and play.
Those interested can email the church office or fill out a Connect Card on Sunday.
Growth Groups Across the Coast
Alongside the Growth Track, smaller Growth Groups meet weekly in homes and at the church throughout the area. Members are invited to belong in Christ-centered relationships, grow through Scripture and conversation, serve others, pray together, and apply Sunday's message in everyday life. Each group decides its own schedule, and study topics follow a seasonal rhythm: sometimes tracking the Sunday sermon series, sometimes working through a discipleship resource.
King's Cupboard and the Kindness Coalition
Compassionate Ministries keeps the church oriented outward. King's Cupboard, the church's community food bank, opens every Tuesday morning from 9:00 to 10:30 AM, providing groceries to neighbors along the Coast. Food donations can be dropped off on the first Sunday of the month or brought to the church office during the week.
Through a partnership with the Estero Bay Kindness Coalition, El Morro also helps provide children's clothing, food vouchers for families in need, and other forms of community support. The coalition's values shape that work: loving the community without an agenda, preserving dignity, treating others well, and pulling the community together for the greater good.
The church also collects Crisis Care Kits that have already traveled to Africa, Haiti, Houston, and other locations hit by natural disaster. The kits contain everyday items needed in emergencies.
Men's Breakfast and Women's Tea
Men's Ministry focuses on building men as spiritual leaders in their families, workplaces, and communities through Growth Groups, Men's Breakfasts, and service projects. Men gather for breakfast on the second Saturday of each month at 9:00 AM in the Sanctuary.
Women's Ministry invites women of all ages and backgrounds to study the Word, serve others, support one another, and gather for fellowship. Activities include Women's Bible Studies, retreats, a Tea Cozy gathering, and ways to come alongside women who need encouragement.
The Most Excellent Way
On Friday evenings at 6:30 PM in the Student Ministry Room, the church hosts The Most Excellent Way, a Christ-centered recovery ministry built on biblical principles and the promises of God's Word. With Jesus as the higher power and the Holy Spirit as guide, the meetings focus on freedom from addiction. The ministry sees its work as the natural overflow of the Father's love, and welcomes anyone in Los Osos and greater San Luis Obispo County who wants to learn more.
A Welcome That Starts at the Door
First Impressions Ministry reflects a conviction that runs through the church: a warm welcome can make all the difference. Greeters are stationed at the campus and inside the Worship Center to help newcomers find their way. Ushers assist people into the service and help distribute the elements during communion. The Hospitality Team sets up and cleans up refreshments for each Sunday gathering.
The church office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to noon. Giving is available online, by mail, or in person during services or office hours. Anyone with a prayer request can submit one online at any time.
Whether someone arrives looking for a first step of faith or a long-term church home, El Morro Church frames its doors as open and its purpose as simple: for the love of God and for the people of the Coast.
