Tucked along Egypt Road in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, just across the harbor from Charleston, East Cooper Baptist Church has spent more than four decades casting a single, defining mission across every hallway, classroom, and worship service it runs: helping broken people treasure Jesus. The church's tagline, "We All Need Jesus," sets the tone for an unusually wide ministry footprint for a single congregation, one that ranges from a Sanctuary choir loft to college dorm rooms at The Citadel, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, and the College of Charleston.
Two Sunday Mornings, Two Styles of Worship
East Cooper offers two distinct Sunday morning services so that worshipers can pick the setting that fits them best. The Traditional service begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary and is led by the East Cooper Choir and Orchestra. It draws on the broader history of Christian worship with hymn selections, corporate readings of Scripture, confessions, and prayers.
A Contemporary service meets in the Worship Center at both 9:30 and 11:00 a.m., led by the East Cooper Worship Band and built around current songs mixed with the best of modern hymns. Both services run the same weekly message and are designed so that families can move between the two without losing the thread of the sermon series.
The congregation's stated philosophy is that worship at ECBC is the corporate expression of the delight, awe, and thankfulness that comes from knowing an infinitely glorious and sovereign God and Savior. Practical notes for visitors include a reserved parking spot near the front (look for the guest-parking signs and the parking attendants), a Welcome Center staffed by a team ready to direct first-time guests, and a wide range of environments for every age, all under one roof.
Kids Ministry: Birth Through Fifth Grade
East Cooper Kids operates every Sunday morning and runs the full birth-to-fifth-grade spectrum. Nursery and Preschool are open during both worship hours. Grades 1 to 5 are invited to Kids Church and small groups during the 11:00 hour.
The nursery welcomes the youngest children in four age-divided rooms: New Baby (under 12 months, pre-crawlers), Busy Crawlers (about 11 to 15 months), Early Walkers (about 13 to 18 months), and Toddlers (about 19 to 24 months). Caregivers in these rooms are trained to introduce the very first basics of the Bible and prayer in a gentle, safe environment.
Preschool (ages three through five, including K5) enjoys Jr. Kids Church in a dynamic group setting with Bible teaching, games, music, and worship, followed by time in age-level classrooms where trained leaders help apply the Bible to daily life. Snacks, typically Cheez-Its or Nilla Wafers, are part of the weekly rhythm; families are asked to send a gluten-free option if needed. Children who have been sick with a fever, cold, or nausea within the last 24 hours are asked to stay home.
Elementary families are encouraged to worship together at the 9:30 service, then release their 1st through 5th graders upstairs to the A-Hallway at 11:00 for Kids Church (grades 1 to 3) or CrossWalk (grades 4 to 5). After a large-group time of teaching, worship, and games, children split into gender-specific, grade-level small groups for discussion.
The Friends Ministry serves children with special needs during both service hours in rooms A101 and A102, pairing each child with an adult partner and working with trained ADA professionals to integrate kids with peers in age-appropriate classrooms. Friends also hosts a periodic Respite Night for parents.
On Wednesdays during the school year, Adventure Wednesdays runs from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. for K5 through 5th grade, with directed teaching, play, arts, and music. Parents who serve on campus or attend Wednesday groups and classes may also bring younger children.
Expectant parents and new parents are invited to share their news so the staff can prepare and post new arrivals on the nursery bulletin board. Parents interested in baby dedication first complete a quarterly Parent Commissioning Class held during Sunday worship hours.
Students: Middle School and High School
Students in grades 6 through 12 gather together on Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. Middle Schoolers meet in rooms B218 and B219 for a time called 180, which combines fellowship, teaching, and small-group discussion. High Schoolers meet in the SLC Gym for Axis, with teaching, worship, and relationship-building centered on Christ.
Wednesday nights bring the middle school crowd to The Journey in the East Cooper Gym from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. A blend of sports, games, a gospel message or testimony, and small-group discussion anchors the evening, and the doors are open to any and all middle school students.
Discipleship Groups are at the heart of the High School Ministry. These weekly groups meet on Sundays at 4:30 p.m. or Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m., giving students a steady place to study God's Word, pray together, and keep one another accountable.
An audio resource called Faithful Family Endeavor, hosted by Next Gen Pastor Danny Beech, walks parents through living faithfully as a family with bi-weekly episodes.
Senior Adults: A Multi-Generational Church
East Cooper identifies itself as a multi-generational church, and adults 65 and up are an active part of it. Senior adults worship on Sundays at either 9:30 or 11:00 a.m., gather in monthly luncheons with a meal, guest speaker, and fellowship, and travel together several times a year.
Standing groups for this stage include Man2Man, a Friday men's gathering at 6:20 a.m. in the Gym, and ongoing Women's Bible Study tracks. Class offerings rotate through topical series such as "Following Jesus with the Medieval Church," alongside long-running groups like Truth Seekers and Senior Adult Women.
Senior adults are also encouraged to serve, both inside the church and through the local and global outreach efforts that flow through the rest of the congregation.
Groups, Classes, and Care
The church runs three overlapping lanes of small-group life. More than forty Community Groups are scattered across the Charleston area and exist to do "life-on-life" discipleship around the one-another commands of Scripture: love one another, pray for one another, bear one another's burdens.
Age and Stage Groups include Grandmothers in Prayer on Tuesday mornings at 8:00 a.m., Man2Man on Friday mornings, and three weekly Women's Bible Study tracks covering Tuesday, Wednesday evenings, and Thursday mornings. Senior Adult classes and Sunday School style offerings round out the schedule.
Care Groups meet deeper needs. DivorceCare gathers on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in Room B227. GriefShare meets Sundays at 11:00 a.m. in the same room. re|engage, a marriage enrichment track, meets Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in Room B214. Biblical counseling is available for emotional and spiritual needs through the Care Team.
Campus Outreach on Four Local Colleges
One of the most distinctive features of East Cooper Baptist Church is its partnership with Campus Outreach. The church places and supports staff members on The Citadel, Charleston Southern University, Coastal Carolina University, and the College of Charleston, with regional directors in Charleston, downtown, and at Coastal Carolina. The aim is to build gospel-centered community among college students, mentor them into maturity, and send them out as disciple-makers. Many of the church's own staff members first came to faith through this same campus ministry.
What East Cooper Believes
The congregation's Basic Beliefs define its doctrinal core. East Cooper affirms the truth, authority, and sufficiency of Scripture; one true God who eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; the goodness of God's creation and its purpose for His glory; the universal sinfulness of humanity and the deserved penalty of physical and spiritual death; the full deity and humanity of Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His substitutionary death, His physical resurrection, and His future physical return; and the future resurrection of the dead, with eternal reward for those who repent and believe and eternal conscious punishment for those who do not. Salvation is by faith in the person and work of Christ and repentance from sin, and anyone pursuing membership and baptism must agree with these beliefs.
The Theological Distinctives mark convictions held against a wider evangelical landscape. The church holds to the complementary roles of men and women in the home and church as a matter of divine design. Baptism is reserved for those who have personally professed faith and is performed by immersion as the clearest picture of death and resurrection with Christ. Global Impact Ministry is shaped by a priority of reaching unreached people groups, ethnic or ethnolinguistic nations without enough Christians to evangelize themselves.
The Five Solas of the Reformation summarize the church's understanding of the gospel: Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone as the rule of faith and life), Solus Christus (Christ alone as mediator), Sola Fide (faith alone as the instrument of justification), Sola Gratia (grace alone as the ground of salvation), and Soli Deo Gloria (God alone as the aim of all things).
Four values are written into the church's daily life. It submits to the Bible as the incarnate Word, anchoring the congregation in an ever-changing culture. It pursues life as a family, both in homes and across generations. It serves others because it has been served by Christ and equipped with spiritual gifts. It makes disciples, multiplying through gospel proclamation and relational follow-through to the neighborhoods and the nations.
Serving, Locally and Globally
Sunday-by-Sunday serving teams include the Welcome Team (door greeters and coffee hosts), the Kids Ministry team, the Production Team, the Care Team, the Meal Team, and the Worship Ministry (Worship Band, Choir, and Orchestra). Auditions are required for band and orchestra placement.
Outside the walls, East Cooper points members toward local partners such as Family Restoration, Financially Vulnerable initiatives, and Foster Youth Skills Training, and toward short- and long-term global work focused on unreached people groups in places such as Southeast Asia and the United Kingdom.
The Arts Academy offers individual and group instruction in music and the visual arts to both the church and the wider community, continuing what the church describes as the historic role of the church as a propagator of the arts.
Weddings, Funerals, and the Building
East Cooper hosts weddings and funerals under guidelines set by its elders. Couples marrying in the Sanctuary complete pre-marriage counseling at no charge, and either the bride or groom must be a church member or the child or grandchild of a member. The standard fee for use of the Sanctuary is $1,000, covering five hours of access, with additional time billed hourly. The Welcome Center can be reserved for a reception only when the wedding is held in the church. Same-sex marriage is not performed or hosted on the property. Funerals are reserved for members and their immediate families and are generally scheduled on weekday mornings; Shepherding Pastor Steve Tuck meets with each family to plan the service.
Palmetto Christian Academy, with its own headmaster as part of the East Cooper staff team, sits alongside the church as a ministry partner.
Stewardship and Giving
Giving supports the general budget as well as a defined set of "beyond the tithe" funds. The Global Impact fund underwrites the church's work among unreached peoples. The Benevolence fund helps people in the church or community with financial needs. The Legacy fund allows members to give both now and through estate planning. The Student Life Center is a current building campaign aimed at investing in the next generation. A separate giving channel supports staff members placed through Campus Outreach on local college campuses.
Leadership
Buster Brown has served as Senior Pastor since 1982, one of the longest tenures among the staff. Van Barnhill is Executive Pastor. Sean Alford oversees Groups, Leland Brown oversees Discipleship, and Steve Tuck serves as Shepherding Pastor, with a particular focus on weddings, funerals, and pastoral care. Danny Beech leads the Next Generation umbrella, which includes Kids, Middle School, and High School Ministry. Quint Schoeneberg directs Contemporary Worship, Larry Faulkner directs Traditional Worship, and Mike Doll is Instrumental Director, with Jennifer Luiken leading the Choir. The pastoral resident program includes Jacob Litton and Josh Turner. Two pastor emeriti, Dave Bruner and Craig Harris, remain connected to the church's life. Elders, deacons, and deacon chairman Bill Rathman round out the lay leadership team.
Worship services are broadcast live each Sunday morning for those who cannot attend in person, and the sermon archive stretches back through the most recent teaching series. The church's office in Mount Pleasant is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a phone line and prayer requests both answered from the same address on Egypt Road.
