From Scofield Memorial to Campbell Trail

DCBC's story begins on September 15, 1968, at Scofield Memorial Church. Its first service was in Cantonese with Mandarin interpretation, led by Rev. Danny Ma, then a Dallas Theological Seminary student, and Rev. Stephen Chiu. The congregation moved to the chapel of Gaston Avenue Baptist Church in 1970. Rev. Ma was ordained and five deacons were installed in 1971, and the Sisters Fellowship followed in 1973. In 1974, Rev. Ma became DCBC's first missionary to the Philippines, Rev. Chung Wai Lam became senior pastor, and adult Sunday school, a Bible study fellowship, regular prayer and the Chia Shu publication were established.

In March 1976, the church bought its Capps Drive building and moved there that May. Mandarin fellowship began in 1977, followed by children's worship, a Cantonese fellowship in 1979, a combined Mandarin and Cantonese senior fellowship in 1980, and a youth fellowship in 1982. The church adopted its official name in 1983, added a Missions Fund and continued expanding its deacon and ministry leadership. A 4.4-acre property on Campbell Trail was purchased in 1985, and DCBC moved into the new facilities in October 1986. English worship began that year, with an English fellowship added in 1987.

The building program continued with the second phase completed in 1995, when the sanctuary seated 500. Weekly Wednesday prayer began in 1992, and a handbell choir was added in 1993. In 1996, DCBC opened its facilities to the Bible Study Fellowship, described as its first community-service ministry. Cantonese worship began in 1999; a Community Service Committee and English as a Second Language classes followed in 2000; and the congregation adopted three worship times in Cantonese, English and Mandarin in 2001. Chinese schools and a church-planting effort in Frisco followed in 2002. The Frisco church became independent in 2005, and work began on a fourth building phase, including the Family Center, in 2008.

Children From Nursery Through Sixth Grade

DCBC Kids welcomes children from birth through sixth grade. Preschool children from age three through Kindergarten and elementary children in first through sixth grade join worship at 9:30 AM for large-group singing and Bible lessons. At 11:15 AM, the same age groups gather for Sunday school in smaller groups with review activities and life application.

First-time families stop at the Kids Check-In area, where the Kids Welcome Team helps with check-in and questions. Pre-registration with a parent's name, email and phone number can speed the process. Every adult volunteer is screened with a background check.

Friday AWANA continues through the school year from September through May. Children from age three to sixth grade meet from 7:15 to 9:00 PM, with check-in beginning at 7:00 PM. Cubbies serves ages three and four, Sparks serves Kindergarten through second grade, and T&T serves third through sixth grade. Club time combines Scripture learning and memorization with games and service teams. Vacation Bible School is another recurring part of DCBC's ministry with children.

Teenagers, College Students and English Community Groups

DCBC Youth's vision is an authentic community for teenagers where the Gospel is communicated, lived out and experienced. Its values begin with depth: an intimate relationship with God aimed at heart change rather than behavioral modification alone. Discipleship is relational, with mature believers teaching, caring for and walking alongside less mature believers. Community is sacrificial and authentic; faith seeks God's direction, relies on the Holy Spirit and moves into obedience. Missions is a way of life, beginning with the place God has given DCBC and extending to worldwide mission through prayer, giving and going. Worship is expressed in song and in the way all of life honors God.

Community groups are a major discipleship structure in the English ministry. Their pattern has three directions: UP in obedience to Christ, IN in mutual love, and OUT in engaging the world for Christ. They also emphasize accountability, belonging and care, the three essentials called ABC.

  • Co-ed young adult community groups meet on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, with individual times varying.
  • Ladies Loving the Lord, or L3, meets online at 7:30 PM on Tuesdays. ACT meets at 7:30 PM on the 2nd and 3rd Thursdays at DCBC and includes a 4th Saturday community service.
  • Homebuilders groups include Friday Night Lights for married couples with children on the 1st and 3rd Fridays at 7:15 PM in G-201, and LIFE on the 2nd and 4th Fridays at 7:15 PM in G-126.
  • Homebuilders - Agape meets at 4:00 PM on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays in Plano or Richardson. Homebuilders - Bethlehem meets on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays in Plano or Frisco.

Mandarin Fellowships and Heart to Heart Mentoring

The Mandarin ministry meets throughout the week in several groups:

  • Mandarin A meets at 10:30 AM on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays at F-122 and online.
  • Mandarin B, Mandarin C, Joyful Fellowship and Andre Fellowship meet at 7:30 PM on Fridays in G-214, G-124, F-122 and G-206 respectively.
  • Mandarin College Fellowship meets at 6:30 PM on Fridays in G-203, G-204 and G-205.
  • Sisters Fellowship meets at 10:00 AM on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays in E-100.
  • Joshua Fellowship meets from 2:00 to 6:00 PM on Saturdays in E-200, while Daniel Fellowship meets at 3:00 PM on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays in F-122.

DCBC Heart to Heart is a women's mentoring ministry that establishes discipleship relationships between women. A more mature believer walks alongside a younger woman for a season, helping her grow firm in her faith and become equipped for ministry. The stated purpose is to live out Titus 2 by helping women train one another in faith and ministry for the glory of God. Prospective mentors complete training and assessment, and applications for both roles are reviewed by English Ministry pastors and Heart to Heart coordinators.

Choirs, Family Care and a Church Library

DCBC's music ministry includes adults and children and is described as creative and diverse. The Adult Choir leads praise with the church family, and the Children's Choir welcomes children in grades one through six. Upper-elementary and high school students can join the Handbell Choir, while the Orchestra welcomes trained instrumentalists. Music is intended not only to lead worship but also to affirm faith and challenge the church.

Family Ministry seeks to shepherd people toward Christlike character through parental and marital education, counseling, care for elderly people and attention to the needs of single adults. Its work is organized as prevention and intervention. Prevention includes teaching through Sunday school, workshops and books, along with admonishment, comfort and encouragement. Intervention adds counseling, caring and mentoring. Stephen Ministry is another outreach, with trained ministers providing one-to-one Christian care to people who are hurting.

The church library serves as a resource center for Christian books and media in English and Chinese, with children's and family collections. It is open Sundays from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM near the Fellowship Hall. Active attendees may apply for a library card, and loans are due after 21 days.

Weekly Prayer and a Mission Reach

Prayer Hour meets every Wednesday at 7:30 PM. On fifth Wednesdays, the same slot becomes a Global Partner Talk focused on the missions partners DCBC supports.

The missions ministry has sponsored 23 missionaries and their families, work in three mission fields through 20 mission organizations, and several seminarian students. Short-term mission involvement has reached Asia, Mexico, South America, Europe, Canada, the Middle East and communities in the United States. The mission choir travels to different cities for evangelism each year, and youth have participated in mission service, including English teaching in other countries.

DCBC also holds annual evangelistic meetings in Cantonese, Mandarin and English. Language classes, Vacation Bible School for children and adults, and family camps are used to reach non-believers. The church's giving supports a General Fund, Missions Fund and Building Fund, with online giving available. Community work also includes English as a Second Language classes, begun in 2000, and service projects that bring fellowship groups and families together to serve neighbors.

What DCBC Believes

DCBC's beliefs are explicitly biblical. The church holds that the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments are verbally inspired by God in every part, inerrant, and the supreme and final authority for faith and practice. It affirms one triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, co-eternal and co-identical in nature, who created all things and accomplished salvation.

Jesus Christ is affirmed as the only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary and sinless. He was crucified for humanity's sins, bodily resurrected on the third day, ascended to heaven and will return bodily in glory. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, indwells believers, unites them with the Lord and empowers victorious Christian living.

Human beings are created in God's image. The fall of Adam brought sin into the world, and redemption comes purely by God's grace, received through personal faith and repentance in Christ; those redeemed are kept by God's power. The church is the body of Christ, composed of born-again believers under Scripture for worship and fellowship. DCBC also affirms the imminent rapture, a seven-year tribulation, Christ's millennial kingdom and the final separation of the saved and unsaved.

Up, In and Out

DCBC's three-part mission gives shape to its life together: grow UP in obedience to Jesus, grow IN through love for one another, and reach OUT to make disciples by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Richardson church brings together Chinese heritage, multiple languages and many generations in one body centered on Jesus Christ, healthy families, discipleship, worship and service.
