A Cornerstone in Green Valley
Tucked along Dixon Street in the Green Valley community of Temple Hills, Maryland, Cornerstone Baptist Community Church has long served as a gathering place for families across Prince George's County, the District of Columbia, and Northern Virginia. Members and neighbors describe the church in its own language as "a family that prays together and stays together," and the warmth of that phrase shows up in how the doors open every week. The congregation is rooted in the belief that Jesus is the cornerstone of the church, a conviction drawn from Psalm 118:22-23, and that conviction shapes every ministry that flows from the building at 3636 Dixon Street.
What the Church Believes
Cornerstone Baptist Community Church teaches that Jesus is the cornerstone of the church and that the body of believers is called to disseminate the Word of God to His people. The church describes itself as progressive in its tenets and doctrines, and it speaks plainly about standing up for equality in all aspects of life, including freedom of religion, employment, education, and universal human rights. Members aim to be a pillar in their community, ready, willing, and able to do what God has commanded so that His Kingdom is built here on earth. The church's ministry vision is anchored in Luke 4:18-19, a passage that calls believers to preach good news to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, set captives free, and recover sight to the blind.
Sunday Mornings: SONday School and Worship
Sunday is the heart of the week at CBCC. SONday School begins at 9:30 a.m., welcoming adults and children for Bible study that is offered both in person and virtually through Zoom and Facebook. SONday School Director Brother Ralph Pierce oversees the teaching, and the congregation publishes a monthly outline to keep classes aligned with the same scriptural focus.
At 11:00 a.m., the Praise and Worship Service fills the sanctuary. The service is led by Pastor Charles W. Bynum, II, and the music is shaped by First Lady Denitra A. Bynum in her role as Music & Arts Director. Worship is also carried online through Zoom, Facebook, and the church's YouTube channel, so that members who are traveling, homebound, or simply unable to attend in person can still join the service. A printed Sunday Bulletin is published each week to guide worshipers through the order of service.
Tuesday and Wednesday Bible Study
Outside of Sunday, the church offers two weekly Bible study sessions so that working schedules can be accommodated. On Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m., and again on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m., Bible study is held both in person and virtually. The midweek rhythm gives members a chance to dig into Scripture, ask hard questions, and carry what they have learned back into their workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods.
Golden Moments Prayer Line
Wednesday also begins with the Golden Moments Prayer Line, which runs from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Callers dial in to 1-667-770-1476 and enter access code 815256# to pray together before the day begins. For members who want a quiet way to start the morning in community, the prayer line is a steady weekly touchpoint.
Corner Book Buddies
One of the most distinctive ministries at CBCC is Corner Book Buddies, a reading program that sends volunteers to Hillcrest Heights Elementary School, located at 4305 22nd Place in Hillcrest Heights. Every other Wednesday and Thursday, members read to Pre-K through second-grade students, building literacy and relationships one book at a time. The program is coordinated by Deaconess Debarra Davis, and the church invites anyone who is interested to volunteer.
Joshua's Generation Ministry
The next generation of the church is shepherded through Joshua's Generation Ministry, led by Deaconess Angela Simmons. The ministry gives young people a place to grow in faith, leadership, and service, with the goal of preparing them to carry the church's mission forward.
Music & Arts
Music is central to worship at CBCC, and the Music & Arts ministry is directed by First Lady Denitra A. Bynum. The ministry curates the songs, choirs, and special music that support the 11:00 a.m. Praise and Worship Service, and it is a place where singers, musicians, and artists who feel called to serve can find a home.
SONday School
While SONday School meets at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, it functions as its own ministry under the direction of Brother Ralph Pierce. The ministry is designed for adults and children who want to go deeper into the Bible before worship begins, and it offers a virtual option through Zoom so that distance is never a barrier to learning the Word.
Communications
Deacon David Simmons leads the Communications ministry, keeping the congregation connected through The Stone Center, The Stone Cinematics, and The Stone Archives. Past services are archived on YouTube, and a dedicated Church Summit 2026 playlist shares recordings from special gatherings. The Stone Cinematics captures the church's life in motion, while The Stone Archives preserves photographs from past anniversaries, baptisms, and fellowship moments.
Administration, Deacons, and Trustees
The Administration ministry is led by Shamir Lloyd, who also serves as Pastor and Church Secretary. The ministry organizes the pastor's schedule, the church calendar, bulletins and programs, and travel arrangements. The Church Clerk, Denise Y. Hughes, maintains member records and church files. Deaconess Nakida Simmons chairs the Deaconess ministry, and a Board of Trustees, chaired by Nicole Jordan, oversees the temporal affairs of the church alongside Brenda Reid, Shirley Hatton, Louie Thomas, Jamaal Parker, and Indasha Bynum.
Leadership: Pastor Charles W. Bynum, II
The congregation is shepherded by Pastor Charles W. Bynum, II, who preaches the Gospel of Jesus Christ and leads both Sunday worship and Bible study. His wife, First Lady Denitra A. Bynum, serves alongside him as Music & Arts Director and is a familiar presence in worship leadership. Together with the deacons, deaconesses, trustees, and ministry leaders, they guide a church that has celebrated a 55th Founders Day, a 60th Anniversary, and a 13th Pastor's Anniversary Service over the years.
Giving and Staying Connected
Members and friends who want to support the work of CBCC can give online through Givelify, a payment gateway that allows gifts from any location at any time. The church encourages tithing as an act of worship and offers online giving as a way to give consistently, even when members cannot be present in service. Giving is also accepted in person during Sunday worship and Bible study.
