The Storrs Road Church of Christ describes itself with a single line: "A community of disciples, participating in God's reconciling work throughout creation." The congregation meets on Storrs Road in Mansfield Center, the small village at the heart of the town of Mansfield in eastern Connecticut, just south of the University of Connecticut campus. From its building there, the church keeps a quiet, deliberate rhythm: Bible classes on Sunday morning, a Sunday morning service of worship, and a Wednesday evening devotional that closes out the week.
The church is made up of people who follow the God of the Bible and believe He still holds the key to a full life in the 21st century. Members meet each week to worship, to fellowship, and to encourage one another. Visitors are always welcome.
Three Weekly Gatherings
The week at Storrs Road has a steady shape. On Sunday mornings, Bible class meets from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. The main worship service follows from 10:30 a.m. to noon. On Wednesday evenings, the church gathers for a devotional from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Members and visitors can attend in person at 335 Storrs Road, and a Zoom link is published so anyone can join the Wednesday gathering, and often the Sunday meetings as well, from home.
Simple, Heartfelt Worship
The Sunday service is described by the church as "simple but heartfelt." Each week the congregation sings hymns and spiritual songs, prays together, shares the Lord's Supper, and hears a sermon from the Bible. Communion is observed every Sunday, and a brief communion reflection is a regular part of the order of service. The Sunday Bible class is verse by verse; recent classes have worked their way through 1 John and have used Everett Ferguson's Early Christians Speak, published by Abilene Christian University Press, as a guide to early church history and practice, with chapters on the Lord's Supper, church discipline, and early Christian prayer shaping the discussion.
A Rotation of Preachers
Storrs Road does not employ a single senior pastor. The pulpit is shared among several men who take turns preaching, leading communion, and teaching. Regular contributors include Patrick Barber, Gary Burke, Tom Yoakum, Mark Kuchta, Meshach Ojo, and Dayton Miyashiro. Scott Hopkins has also led communion reflections. The variety gives the church a teaching voice drawn from several backgrounds, and the sermon archive shows a wide range of subjects covered, from parables and Pauline epistles to Old Testament prophets and the Psalms.
Reaching Beyond Mansfield Center
Mission work is a centerpiece of the church's life. Two long-standing partnerships receive regular support from the congregation. In Nigeria, the church supported the late Stephen Bekee, a native preacher, for about ten years until his death in the 1990s, and continues to support his widow, Gladys. His son Uchenna Bekee has become a preacher himself and is developing Hidden Treasures Christian School, a multi-story building planned for thirteen classrooms and five offices. Storrs Road members contribute individually to the school, with the congregation sending roughly $3,000 a year, mostly for teacher salaries, through the West Georgia Church of Christ, which oversees the project. In India, the church supports Babu Pothan, who conducts gospel meetings, travels as an itinerant preacher to villages, and runs a one-week-a-month preacher training school. He and his wife Latha also directly support about twelve needy children, and a portion of the monthly support goes to widows, orphans, and others in need in the villages.
An Online Welcome
For those who cannot attend in person, the church maintains an active online presence. Services and devotionals are recorded and posted as audio, with sermon notes that include the biblical text, the speaker, and the artwork paired with the message. A YouTube channel and a Facebook page extend the same content to social platforms. A Zoom link is published for those who want to attend remotely. Visitors with questions can write to storrsroadcoc@gmail.com or call (860) 456-2367.
Stepping Inside
The church building sits at 335 Storrs Road, with a mailing address of P.O. Box 87, Mansfield Center, CT 06250. The congregation invites neighbors to drop in and visit. The services are unpretentious; the order of worship centers on the Lord; and the people, the church says, are honored when their neighbors come.
