Christian Faith Missionary Baptist Church is located at 2616 1/2 Calumet Street in Houston, and its motto, "Where the Bible Way, is the Christian Faith Way," reflects a church built around biblical teaching. Founded in 1969, Christian Faith has developed from an organizing group into a congregation centered on worship, prayer, Scripture study, discipleship and service. Bishop Dr. Corey Wilson leads the church, and its live Sunday service begins at 9:30 AM CST.
A Church Organized on Sampson Street
The church began with the proposed name "Christian Workers Council," submitted by Ruby Wilson and Robert Johnson. Its first meeting was held on January 19, 1969, in the Martin Luther King Building on Sampson Street. Deacon Thomas Jones served as chairman and Daniel Butcher as co-chairman, while other leaders were appointed to finance, contact and program committees.
Concerned about returning a pastor and organizing a church, Wilson, Johnson, Eddie Moten, Iva Wells and Leola Robinson held meetings in various Houston locations. They prayed, hoped, trusted and stayed on one accord as they moved from place to place. The late Rev. N.C. Crain, pastor of St. John Baptist Church, helped organize and advise Christian Faith in its early doctrine and teaching. At the organizational meeting on March 17, 1969, the first deacons were ordained: Daniel Butcher, Thomas Jones, J.H. Graham, E. Larkin and Eddie Moten.
A letter invited W.H. Banks to become the pastor, and he accepted. The first service was held the following Sunday with Rev. Marshall of St. John Missionary Baptist Church as speaker. Christian Faith continued meeting at Magnolia Hall, at McGowen and Nagle.
Rooted in Houston's Missionary Baptist Family
On April 17, 1969, Pastor Banks held a special service for his acceptance at Fourth Missionary Baptist Church, where Rev. E.S. Branch was pastor. More than 200 people joined Christian Faith that afternoon. On July 27, Pastor and Sister Banks were installed at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. The late Rev. D. Leon Everett later served as a minister. From 1969 to 1974, Christian Faith used facilities at Jerusalem, including a pool, cafeteria and finance facilities, and gratefully remembered the congregation's kindness.
After 25 years of service, the Rev. William H. Banks concluded his ministry on January 1, 1995. Following months of prayer and formation of a pulpit search committee, Roland E. Mouton Sr. was elected pastor on August 28, 1995, and occupied the pulpit September 3. An investiture on November 12 featured the Rev. James W.E. Dixon II and Northwest Community Baptist Church, with the Rev. D.Z. Cofield giving the charge.
In 1996, Christian Faith purchased the property on the west side of the church. Dr. Timothy Simmons joined the ministry, and Preston Cook, Walter Ervin, Onzie Jones and Melvin Tisdale joined the deacons. Pastor Mouton established Discipleship and Deacon's Family Ministries. After 17 years of service, Mouton concluded his ministry on January 7, 2012.
On February 17, 2013, the Rev. Corey Wilson was installed as pastor with his wife, Tangie Wilson. The Rev. Samuel Smith of Mt. Horeb Missionary Baptist Church gave charge to the congregation, and the Rev. D.Z. Cofield gave charge to Corey and First Lady Tangie. Christian Faith gives thanks for every year, every pastor, every ministry and every soul saved while looking toward the future. The work remains rooted in the same biblical mission: seek God's kingdom and make disciples.
Bishop Dr. Corey Wilson's Calling
Bishop Wilson accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, was baptized in Oakland, California, at Foothill Baptist Church and began serving in the local church. He was licensed in November 1998 by Joe L. Smith, bishop of Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Oakland and president of the Bay Area Baptist Minister's Union. He was ordained in February 2010 at Rock of Ages Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond, California, and served as an associate minister under the Rev. Dr. Otha Johnson. Wilson holds doctorates in Christian psychology and humanitarianism.
Before answering the call to Christian Faith, Wilson spent more than 12 years as a psychology facilitator with Contra Costa County and as an emerging leader at Allen Temple Baptist Church. He answered the call to Christian Faith in November 2012 and was unanimously elected pastor. He serves as archbishop for the International Church Fellowship of Houston, as advisor and chaplain for the Houston Police Department, and is associated with the "Give-A-Thumbs-Up" prayer initiative for police. He is a former chaplain of the National Buffalo Soldiers 9th and 10th Calvary Museum. He and Tangie are married, and she leads Woman to Woman Ministry.
A Vision Centered on Scripture, Discipleship and Service
Wilson's installation vision draws from Matthew 6:33, which directs believers to seek first the kingdom of God, and Matthew 28:19-20, which speaks of teaching all nations, baptism and observing what Christ commanded. Christian Faith's vision calls for:
- Spiritual growth through worship, prayer and study of Scripture.
- A supportive, inclusive community that welcomes people, fosters friendships and promotes unity in Christ.
- Outreach that shares the Gospel through service to local and global communities with love and compassion.
- Discipleship that equips believers to serve actively in their gifts and lead others to faith.
- Honoring God in every aspect of life.
These aims connect the church's worship with practical service. The stated goal is a community of faith where individuals and families experience the transformative power of Jesus Christ, grow deeper in faith and reach those in need.
Sunday at 9:30 AM CST
Every Sunday at 9:30 AM CST, Bishop Wilson leads a live service described as powerful and uplifting, with dynamic preaching, inspiring worship and a message of hope intended to equip and encourage believers. The service is shared on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, as part of a community growing together in faith and purpose.
Learning, Leadership and Care
Sunday School, Youth and Bible Study
Discipleship is expressed through several church ministries. Deacon Riley Jones serves as chairman of the Deacon Board and superintendent of Sunday School. The church also identifies Christian Faith Youth and Leading Bible Study Night as ministries that support spiritual growth and fellowship.
Women, Health Ministry and Praise and Worship
First Lady Tangie Wilson leads Woman to Woman Ministry, while Bobbie Young and Shirley John lead the Health Ministry. Kayla Lewis-Hegger serves as Praise and Worship Leader, and Michael Washington serves as a deacon. These named ministries support the church's emphasis on spiritual growth, worship, discipleship and service.
Giving as an Expression of Faith
Christian Faith describes monetary giving as a privilege and blessing from Christ, and it connects obedience in tithing with sharing the good news mandated in Scripture. Its reasons for tithing are that God commands it, it demonstrates a heart given wholly to God, it builds trust with God, and it helps the church accomplish its goals. The church quotes Malachi 3:10: "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."
The stated ministry objective is for Christ alone to be glorified. In practice, that objective is expressed by preaching the gospel, applying Christ's Word, loving people and living in gratitude for Christ's finished work. Online giving is available for the church's ministry.
Christian Faith Missionary Baptist Church remains a Houston congregation whose identity is stated plainly in its motto: "Where the Bible Way, is the Christian Faith Way." Under Bishop Dr. Corey Wilson, Sunday worship, discipleship, youth, Bible study, women's and health ministries carry forward the work begun on Sampson Street in 1969.
