A Neighborhood Church Built on Five Words
Carmel Presbyterian Church sits on Carmel Road in south Charlotte, just outside the SouthPark area, in a brick campus shared by a sanctuary, fellowship hall, and an education building that also houses Carmel Presbyterian Weekday School. The congregation's life is organized around a single sentence: "Bringing hope and healing to our neighbors by celebrating the Love of Jesus Christ." From that mission grows the church's five core values, each given a directional name: UPWARD, INWARD, FORWARD, ONWARD, and OUTWARD, so that members can picture how worship, relationships, children's ministry, lifelong growth, and mission outreach all fit together.
Sundays at Carmel: Blended Worship at 10:30
Worship is, in the church's own words, the "apex value." Every Sunday at 10:30 a.m., the congregation gathers at 2048 Carmel Road for a service that draws on both contemporary and traditional music, what the church describes as a blended style. The hour weaves music, prayer, and the teaching of the Word, with Rev. Peter McKechnie preaching. Parents with young children start together in worship; shortly into the service, Pastor Peter invites children ages four through third grade forward before they are escorted by a teacher to their own classroom for a lesson and snack (see Sundays at Carmel).
Sunday School Before the Service, 9:30 to 10:15
An hour before worship, the classrooms in the fellowship hall and education building open for Sunday school, running from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. year round for adults and from September through May for children and youth.
Adults can pick from two classes. Seeking & Living His Word, meeting in the choir room, draws lessons from the Bible with questions and discussion encouraged. C3 - Christ, Coffee, and Conversation, meeting in the right hallway of the fellowship hall, is a relaxed class that pairs a cup of coffee with conversation about scripture, life's challenges, and following Christ today.
Younger classes follow the kids' lead. J-Walkers, for transitional kindergarten through third grade, uses hands-on activities, games, and age-appropriate lessons to explore Bible stories. AWOL (A Way of Life), for fourth grade and up, is the youth Sunday school class and talks through the bigger questions about God, the Bible, and what it means to live as a follower of Christ.
Caring for the Youngest Children
Carmel Nursery welcomes children from birth through age three during the 10:30 worship service in the Education Building. Any usher can direct families there, and children are picked up immediately after the service ends. Together with the Carmel Kids dismissal at the start of the sermon, the nursery is how the church makes space for families to worship together while their youngest members are also cared for.
Connecting Beyond Sunday Morning
The church's small-group life happens on weekdays and Saturdays, several of them over food or around a table.
Mondays at 7 a.m. the men of the church gather for the weekly Men's Breakfast in Fellowship Hall: food, fellowship, a devotional, and prayer. Saturdays at 7 a.m. the Band of Brothers Bible Study meets at Panera Bread Southpark for a men's Bible study; the group suggests arriving early to place a food order and eat before the study begins.
The Ladies Circles run September through May and offer two times to fit busy schedules: the second Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in Fellowship Hall's right hallway, and the second Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. in the choir room. Sit 'n Stitch, held on the first and third Wednesdays at 10 a.m. in the Mead Conference Room, is a women's needlework group whose handmade creations are donated to the Ronald McDonald House, Project Linus, Hospice, the Women's Shelter, and members of Carmel.
Outreach: Local, Regional, and Global
The OUTWARD value is shared through three concentric rings of mission. Locally, the church partners with Young Life Charlotte and the Queen City Pregnancy Resource Center; recent Christmas giving through that pregnancy-center partnership blessed a Charlotte mother and her three children with gifts and support. The annual Easter Eggstravaganza and the Park 'N Hark service also draw the surrounding neighborhood onto the campus.
Regionally, Carmel has stood alongside Arbor Dale Presbyterian Church in Banner Elk, which was deeply affected by Hurricane Helene, helping the western North Carolina church and surrounding area rebuild. Mission trips, like the Avery County mission, are organized from this partnership.
Globally, the church supports Samaritan's Purse, including its Operation Christmas Child shoebox ministry.
Carmel Presbyterian Weekday School
Carmel Presbyterian Weekday School (CPWS) is the church's long-running Christian preschool and a daily extension of the FORWARD core value: "We intentionally disciple and nurture children." The school serves children from 12 months through Transitional Kindergarten, operating Monday through Friday from 9:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., September through May.
The school's program is play-based and Christ-centered, woven through with art, music, drama, nature, storytelling, and basic concepts like colors and numbers. Weekly chapel, a beloved part of the week, frames the children's spiritual formation alongside their developmental growth. Ways to Give
Gifts can be made online by credit or debit card or directly from a bank account, either as a one-time gift or on a recurring schedule. Giving from a bank account lowers the processing fee that the church absorbs. The church also accepts appreciated stock; donors call Office Manager Darlene Conroy at (704) 366-5114 for account information to give to a broker; and can receive Qualified Charitable Distributions directly from IRAs for donors 70 and a half and older. Legacy gifts through bequests, retirement-account beneficiaries, or life insurance naming Carmel as a recipient are another way to support the church's long-term work.
Joining the Church
Carmel welcomes new members whether they are coming from another congregation or stepping into a formal church membership for the first time. Those interested are invited to fill out a short form; the pastor and staff will follow up with details about the next New Members Gathering.
Leadership and Staff
Rev. Peter McKechnie serves as Pastor. His background includes years in traditional ministry alongside work in Apple retail, nonprofit disability outreach, and most recently as a store manager for Jos. A. Bank Clothiers in Knoxville, Tennessee, what he describes as earning an honorary "Masters in the Human Condition." He and his two sons, Baker and Bo, lead the church's teaching.
Jacob Hare directs worship, shaping the blended contemporary-and-traditional music heard each Sunday. Julie Cribb leads the Carmel Presbyterian Weekday School, and Laurel Thompson serves as Carmel Life Coordinator, helping connect newcomers and members to the congregation's groups and ministries. Darlene Conroy manages the church office.
The Carmel Presbyterian Weekday School is staffed by Director Kim Rowe and Assistant Director Patti Gosnell, supported by a full team of teachers and floaters, and is overseen by a school board drawn from the church and the parent community.
Sermons, Calendar, and Staying in Touch
Audio and video recordings of recent sermons by Rev. Peter McKechnie are kept in an online archive, allowing members and visitors to catch up on missed messages or revisit a series. The church also keeps a regularly updated calendar of events, and a connection tool called Carmel Connect (Realm) lets members handle giving, directory information, and sign-ups in one place.
