Calvary Chapel of Delta sits on eleven acres along Delta Road in southern York County, Pennsylvania, just across the Susquehanna line from the Maryland border. A non-denominational fellowship with roots in the Calvary Chapel movement, the church has spent three decades doing one work: opening the Bible and walking through it, chapter by chapter, week after week. From its first Sunday morning service in November 1996 to the completion of a 500-seat sanctuary in late 2023, Calvary Chapel of Delta has grown from a small home Bible study into a teaching church whose voice now reaches far beyond its rural setting through a daily radio program.
A Bible Study in Delta Becomes a Church
The fellowship began in July 1996 as a Sunday-night home Bible study, started by a handful of believers who wanted to learn the entirety of God's Word through expository, verse-by-verse teaching. The group met in the basement of an old post office building on Main Street in Delta, a space the young congregation nicknamed the "Delta Outreach." By October of that year, they were hosting outreach concerts that drew about thirty young people on Friday nights. Sunday mornings followed on November 3, 1996.
The realities of a frigid Pennsylvania winter in a building without heat pushed the group into a second move, to the former E-Z Mart store on Broad Street Extended. Within months, the search for a permanent home ended when the congregation moved into the former Healthy Image Fitness Center on Delta Road in June 1997. In September 2001, the fellowship purchased that property and the eleven acres around it. The site sits on Route 74, across from Delta Family Restaurant, and has been its home ever since.
After more than twenty years in that building, the COVID-19 pandemic changed how the church gathered. In November 2020, the congregation moved into a sixty-by-ninety-foot tent on the property as a health and safety measure. The tent stayed put long enough that the growing church could not return to the indoor sanctuary. Construction on a new addition began in December 2022, and the first service in the new 500-seat sanctuary was held on Thanksgiving Eve, November 22, 2023.
Teaching the Whole Bible, Not Just from It
The teaching ministry at Calvary Chapel of Delta is the heart of the church. The church's motto is "Equipping the Saints," and its working verse is Ephesians 4:12: "for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ." Each week Pastor Doug McClean opens the same text and walks through it verse by verse, a style the church calls simply "teaching the whole Bible, not just from it."
That style traces back to Calvary Chapel's founder, Pastor Chuck Smith, who took over a small flock in Costa Mesa, California, in the 1960s. Smith taught the Bible chapter by chapter and verse by verse, accompanied by simple worship music, and the combination sparked a movement that spread from the West Coast to the East Coast and around the world. Today more than 1,600 ministries are associated under the umbrella of the Calvary Chapel Association, and Calvary Chapel of Delta is one of them.
Pastor Doug has served at the church since its inception. He and his wife Susan started the original Bible study in their home and have remained in Delta through every building change. Their extended testimony follows a path from a rebellious college student in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, through a season of Bible reading beside Susan's father during a family cancer diagnosis, into a Calvary Chapel that was teaching through Daniel line by line, and finally to Delta. The McCleans have five children, now married and starting families of their own.
Three Sunday Mornings and a Midweek Service
Sunday services are held at 8:00, 9:45, and 11:30 AM, with a Sunday night prayer gathering at 6:00 PM. Wednesday nights add a midweek service at 7:00 PM. Each Sunday gathering runs about seventy-five minutes and follows the same pattern: contemporary worship with scripturally grounded songs, followed by a verse-by-verse message from Pastor Doug. Ushers greet at the sanctuary doors and help first-time guests find a seat. The Café is open before and after each service for coffee and conversation.
Services are streamed live online, and the message archive reaches back through every book of the Bible Pastor Doug has taught. The church's mobile app streams and downloads every message, and a separate Church Center app carries the bulletin, calendar, event registrations, groups directory, and giving in one place.
For Spanish-speaking attendees, live Spanish translation is offered during the summer at the 9:45 AM service. In the off-season, translation can be requested with at least one week's notice.
Children, Youth, and Young Adults
Children's ministry is available for infants through age eleven at every Sunday morning and Wednesday night service. Kids learn the Bible at an age-appropriate level, share a snack, and participate in Kids' Worship. A class for children with special needs is offered at the 9:45 AM service, led by David and Emily. All children's ministry volunteers have signed the church's Statement of Faith, completed background checks, and are monitored by members of the safety team. Parents of children three and under receive a pickup label with a unique code, and pagers can be provided for parents of infants and toddlers. Pre-registration is available online.
Parents who prefer to keep their children with them have two options. A Family Room next to the Café lets families watch the service together without worrying about noise, and a Nursing Mothers' Room off the Upper Lobby gives mothers a private place to watch while nursing.
Youth ministry runs in two groups. Junior High, for students in grades seven through nine, meets Sunday mornings during the 11:30 AM service and Wednesday evenings for Bible study and discussion. Senior High, for grades ten through twelve, meets Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM in the Multi-Purpose Room for an interactive teaching time.
Calvary Young Adults gathers on Friday nights at 7:30 PM for worship, Bible study, and fellowship. The group is open to anyone out of high school (at least seventeen) through age thirty, whether single or married, working or in college. The young adults also keep their own schedule and group chat on the Church Center app, and connect through a separate Instagram account.
Home Groups, Small Groups, and Serving
The church runs a network of home groups and small groups that meet throughout the week for fellowship, Bible study, and prayer. Volunteer groups organize the practical work of the church. Anyone interested in serving can fill out an Opportunities to Serve form to find a place to plug in. The church does not maintain a formal membership process; if someone is a believer in Jesus Christ, they are a member of His church, and anyone who regularly attends and fellowships at Calvary Chapel of Delta is considered a member of the local fellowship.
Learn the Word Radio
Calvary Chapel of Delta produces a daily radio teaching program called Learn the Word, with Pastor Doug as the featured speaker. The program airs on stations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Florida, and Oregon, including Hope FM, Truth FM, and Changed Life Radio affiliates, and is available online through Hope FM and Truth FM. The Learn the Word podcast is published on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Pandora, and TuneIn, carrying the same systematic, verse-by-verse approach that shapes the Sunday pulpit.
What the Church Believes
Calvary Chapel of Delta describes itself as a fellowship of believers in the Lordship of Jesus Christ, not a denominational church and not opposed to denominations as such, only to any emphasis on non-biblical teaching that divides the Body of Christ. The church holds to the inerrancy of Scripture, to God as eternally existent in three persons, to Jesus Christ as fully God and fully man, virgin-born, sinless, crucified, raised, ascended, and ever living to intercede, and to a personal, visible, premillennial second coming. Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ; repentance and acceptance of Jesus as Lord and Savior bring new birth, the sealing of the Holy Spirit, and adoption as a child of God.
The church teaches that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are valid for today when exercised within scriptural guidelines, that love is more important than the most spectacular gifts, and that worship of God should be spiritual, intelligent, and fruitful. Worship is designed around the teaching of the Word so that believers learn how He should be worshiped, and music is given a great place in the service.
Baptism and the Gospel
Water baptism is treated as a public, outward testimony of an inward faith, an act of obedience to Christ rather than a step toward salvation. The church baptizes by immersion in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and baptizes only born-again believers; infants and young children who cannot receive and understand the Word are not baptized, though they may be dedicated to the Lord. Anyone who has made a decision to follow Christ can sign up to be baptized.
For those exploring faith, the church offers a simple path drawn from John 3:16 and Romans 10:13: admit need as a sinner, repent, believe that Christ died and rose, and invite Him to come in through prayer. A free Start to Follow workbook is available for new believers who contact the church office.
Getting Connected
Sunday visitors are welcome to grab coffee at the Café, register children ahead of time, and find a seat in the sanctuary. The church building sits on Route 74 at 5911 Delta Road, Delta, Pennsylvania, with parking on the property. Worship is contemporary and the teaching is thorough, the sanctuary is full of multi-generational families and singles, and the dress is whatever is comfortable. Giving is available online, by mail, in person, or through the mobile app, and online giving can opt to cover processing fees so the church receives the full intended gift. Two free apps keep the message archive, the church calendar, and the group directory in one place.
