Know, Grow, Go in Sand Springs
Broadway Baptist Church sits along North Adams Road on the north side of Sand Springs, just west of Tulsa, in a building with multiple entrances, each staffed by a welcome team member ready to point first-time guests in the right direction. The church's motto, "KNOW Jesus, GROW in Jesus, and GO Proclaim Jesus," is the lens through which Broadway talks about its own ministry, from the front of the bulletin to the Sunday morning welcome. Pastor Lee Herring describes the congregation plainly: "BBC is a church full of imperfect people whose lives are being changed by a perfect God." The church presents itself as multigenerational, and its ministries are built so that preschoolers, students, adults, and seniors can each find a place to plug in.
Founded as a Baptist congregation, Broadway's ministry today centers on three rhythms each week: Sunday morning Bible study and worship, Wednesday nights for kids and students, and a long-running weekday preschool that has served Sand Springs families for more than half a century. The teaching calendar is built around a steady diet of verse-by-verse work through books of the Bible, and a deep archive of sermons going back several years is available to anyone who wants to follow along online. A small but steady stream of mission work, primarily in Honduras, gives the church a way to put its "GO" motto into practice beyond the walls of the building on Adams Road.
Sundays at Broadway: Bible Study, Then Worship
Sunday is the heart of the week at Broadway. The morning starts with Sunday Morning Bible Study at 9:00 a.m. Small groups run for about an hour, ending well before the main service so the whole church can gather together. At 10:30 a.m., the whole church meets for Sunday Morning Worship in the Worship Center, and the service runs about an hour and fifteen minutes, ending at 11:45 a.m.
The service itself is built around a blended style. Worship is described as "a mix of contemporary and traditional worship music," led by Worship Pastor Blake Canterbury and a rotation of musicians, with vocals and other contributions from members of the church family. After the music portion, Pastor Lee brings a message from God's Word. Members of the pastoral team take turns in the pulpit, so on any given Sunday a guest might hear from Lee Herring, Blake Canterbury, or Student Pastor Joshua Lattie, and during special seasons other members of the church family lead as well.
Dress is relaxed. Visitors can expect to see everything from business casual to t-shirts and shorts. The building has multiple entrances, and a welcome team member stands ready at each one to help newcomers find the Worship Center, the children's wing, or a Sunday school class. The church's Plan Your Visit form offers a short questionnaire so a host can be ready to greet you by name when you arrive. Once inside, families with young children can take advantage of Children's Church during the main service, and there is plenty of room for strollers, coffee, and a relaxed pace. The church's framing for first-time guests is simple: "Visiting a new church can be intimidating. As a church, we want to help you navigate and help you feel at home. As a multigenerational church, we want each person and family to find a place to plug in and find community."
For those who cannot attend in person, the Sunday service is livestreamed on YouTube, and the sermon archive organizes an extensive collection of past messages by series, by book of the Bible, and by speaker. Recent teaching series have included a long walk through the book of Hebrews called "Jesus Is Greater Than," a study of Philippians titled "Walking in a Manner Worthy of the Gospel," a multi-part journey through Romans ("Foundations of Faith" and a follow-up, "Transformed: Application of Faith"), a series on the parables called "7 Short Stories," and a Christmas series in the Old Testament called "First Word: Christmas in the First Covenant." The archive also includes topical series on the Grand Trilogy of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, an Easter series titled "He Is Not Here: The Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ," and a Honduras mission trip series recorded after the team returned home. Pastors and lay members rotate through the preaching schedule, and special Sundays like Senior Sunday and Communion services are scheduled around the main worship rhythm.
Wednesday Nights: BKids and BSM
When Wednesday evening comes around, the building fills with two parallel ministries for the next generation: BKids and BSM. BKids is Broadway's children's ministry, meeting at 6:15 p.m. and led by Children's Director Cheryl Johnson. The ministry takes seriously what the church calls a "partnership of parents, adult volunteers, and Christ-centered activities," and the weekly Wednesday night gathering is just one piece of it. Throughout the year, BKids also offers Children's Church during Sunday services, a summertime Vacation Bible School, and BKIDS Summer Camp. The goal, in the church's own words, is to help children "KNOW Christ as their Savior and Lord, GROW in their relationship with Him and others, and GO share what He's done in their hearts and lives."
BSM, the student ministry, also meets Wednesday evenings from 6:15 to 8:00 p.m. and is led by Student Pastor Joshua Lattie. BSM is built around two relationships: a vertical one with God and horizontal ones with peers. The format of the night is straightforward: games, worship, a message from God's Word, and time in small groups. It is designed for students to "discover that there is a mighty God who loves them and wants a relationship with them." Special events, mission opportunities, and an annual student-led worship service round out the year's calendar, and the sermon archive hosts a BSM Student-Led Worship series as part of the church's teaching collection.
Broadway Baptist Preschool Since 1972
For families with younger children, Broadway Baptist Preschool has been a ministry of the church since 1972, giving the program more than fifty years of continuous service to Sand Springs families. The preschool is led by Director Bronwen Downey and exists to provide a Christian worldview of God and the world, integrated with a solid academic education. The staff develops the spiritual, mental, physical, and social facets of life in the children who attend, and across its history the preschool has seen several generations of children from the same families walk through its doors. Registration forms are available online, and a link for the next school year's enrollment is published as soon as the new forms are ready. The preschool is a Christian preschool, but families from the church and the wider community enroll their children, making it one of the church's largest ongoing points of contact with the surrounding town.
What Broadway Believes
Broadway's doctrinal statement is detailed and follows the historic Baptist tradition closely. The church holds that the Bible is God's revelation of Himself, written by men under divine inspiration, "totally true and trustworthy," and the "supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried." Scripture is a perfect treasure of divine instruction, with God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth without any mixture of error for its matter. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, the focus of divine revelation.
God is one in three Persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - infinite in holiness, all powerful, and all knowing. God the Father reigns with providential care over His universe, His creatures, and the flow of human history according to the purposes of His grace. God the Son, the eternal Christ, was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, lived without sin, honored the divine law by His personal obedience, made provision for redemption through His substitutionary death on the cross, was raised from the dead with a glorified body, ascended to the right hand of God where He is the one Mediator, fully God and fully man, and will return in power and glory to judge the world. God the Holy Spirit, fully divine, inspired the men who wrote Scripture, enables men to understand truth through illumination, exalts Christ, convicts of sin, regenerates, calls men to the Savior, baptizes every believer into the Body of Christ, cultivates Christian character, comforts believers, bestows the spiritual gifts by which they serve God through His church, and seals the believer unto the day of final redemption. His presence in the Christian is the guarantee that God will bring the believer into the fullness of the stature of Christ.
Salvation, in the church's view, involves the whole person and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It includes regeneration (the new birth), justification, sanctification, and ultimately glorification. Regeneration is a work of God's grace in which believers become new creatures in Christ Jesus, brought about by the Holy Spirit through conviction of sin and a response of repentance and faith. Justification is God's gracious acquittal of all sinners who repent and believe. Sanctification is the experience, beginning in regeneration, by which the believer is set apart to God's purposes and grows in moral and spiritual maturity through the Holy Spirit. Glorification is the final blessed and abiding state of the redeemed. The church affirms God's purpose of grace in election, holding that all whom God has accepted in Christ and sanctified by His Spirit will never fall away from the state of grace, but will persevere to the end.
A New Testament church, Broadway teaches, is an autonomous local congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel, observing the two ordinances of Christ, and governed by His laws. Its scriptural officers are pastors and deacons, and the office of pastor is reserved for men as qualified by Scripture. Each congregation operates under the Lordship of Christ through democratic processes, in which each member is responsible and accountable to Christ as Lord. The New Testament also speaks of the church as the Body of Christ, which includes all the redeemed of all ages, believers from every tribe, tongue, people, and nation.
Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, symbolizing the believer's faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior, the believer's death to sin, and resurrection to walk in newness of life. Baptism is a prerequisite to the privileges of church membership and the Lord's Supper. The Lord's Supper is a symbolic act of obedience in which members of the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming. The first day of the week is the Lord's Day, set apart for worship and spiritual devotion, both public and private. The church also looks to the personal, visible return of Jesus Christ in glory, the resurrection of the dead, final judgment, the everlasting punishment of the unrighteous in Hell, and the eternal dwelling of the redeemed in Heaven.
The Pastoral Team
The pastoral staff is led by Lee Herring, who serves as Pastor and carries the bulk of the Sunday preaching and overall vision for the church. Blake Canterbury serves as Associate and Worship Pastor, leading the music side of services and frequently preaching in the main Sunday gathering. Joshua Lattie is the Student Pastor, focused on middle and high school students through BSM. Cheryl Johnson leads the children's ministry as Children's Director, and Bronwen Downey directs the preschool. A Women's Ministry gathers for fellowship and events throughout the year, and the broader church family regularly contributes to teaching, music, and devotional leadership during special seasons, including a rotation of speakers during Holy Week that gives lay members a chance to lead the congregation in daily devotionals. The adult ministry at Broadway is in a stage of growth, with the church reserving a place for adult-focused ministry that is still being developed.
Going Out: Honduras and Beyond
The "GO" part of the church's motto is lived out most visibly through mission partnerships. A Honduras mission trip is a regular part of the church's calendar, and a Honduras Mission Team is among those who have led services and shared testimonies with the congregation. The church also observes special seasons like Holy Week, when the congregation walks through daily devotional videos each day of Holy Week leading up to Resurrection Sunday, with different members of the church family leading each day's reflection. Annual children's programs like Kids Kamp round out the year's events, and the church calendar includes conferences, fellowship gatherings, and women's ministry events alongside the weekly schedule.
Giving and Getting Connected
Broadway offers three straightforward ways to give. Online giving is available through a secure link on the church's giving section. Members and visitors can also give in person by stopping by the church office during office hours, or by mailing a check to the church at 1000 North Adams Road, Sand Springs, OK 74063. The church frames giving with the words of 2 Corinthians 9:6-7: "Each person should do as he has decided in his heart - not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver."
The church's office is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and can be reached at (918) 245-7513 or at jnobles@broadwaybaptistchurch.com. Visitors planning a first visit are encouraged to fill out a quick form ahead of time so a team member can be ready to greet them and show them around. Prayer requests can be submitted online as well, and the prayer team shares them with the church family for ongoing intercession. The church's Facebook presence offers one more way to keep up with announcements and devotional content, and the YouTube channel is where the livestream and the deeper sermon archive live.
