Bluff Park United Methodist Church: A Century-Old Congregation on Shades Mountain in Hoover, Alabama

Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama

Bluff Park United Methodist Church is a multi-generational United Methodist congregation in Hoover, Alabama, founded in 1908. It offers traditional and contemporary worship, deep children's and student ministries, Common Tables small groups, and an active food pantry and diaper ministry serving the wider community.

About Bluff Park United Methodist

From a Brush Arbor on Shades Mountain to a Stained-Glass Sanctuary

Bluff Park United Methodist Church sits on Valley Street in Hoover, Alabama, just up the slope from the older neighborhoods that grew up around the original Shades Mountain settlement. The community was once called Hale Springs, and at the turn of the twentieth century it was little more than a wilderness of six homes with the busy furnaces of Oxmoor in the valley below. The first worship service in the area took place in the barn of Daniel Hale around 1889. A few years later, in 1903, services moved to a Brush Arbor at the site of what is now McAllister's Center at the intersection of Shades Crest, Oxmoor, and Tyler Roads.

In 1904, N. J. Dison donated property on which a shared building was erected, and all denominations gathered there for general worship. About a year later, a handful of local women formed the Ladies Aid Society to raise funds for a Methodist church of their own. Each member paid ten cents a month. In 1908 the Methodist Church on Shades Mountain was founded with twenty members. On May 18, 1910, the Ladies Aid Society purchased a parcel of land from Daniel P. and Annie M. Hale for $150, and in the spring of 1912 the wooden church building went up in twelve days at a cost of about $1,000.

The congregation grew steadily. A two-story building was added behind the Sanctuary in 1925, the first parsonage was built in 1941, and construction on the present Sanctuary began in 1949 when the original wooden building was moved to the back of the property. The first worship service in the new Sanctuary was held on Easter morning, 1953, and the cost was paid off within four years. A three-story Education Building followed in 1959. In 1972, the original wooden church and the early education building were torn down to make room for the gym, parlor, Fireside Room, and preschool facilities. The third Sanctuary, with its restored pipe organ once used by McCoy United Methodist Church, twelve magnificent stained-glass windows, and a twelve-foot Rose window, anchors the campus today. A new elevator tower was added in the late 2000s, and in 2019 a new building annex opened for student ministry and community ministry space. In January 2018, Bluff Park UMC celebrated 110 years of ministry and mission, and the congregation continues to look forward to its next century of service on Shades Mountain.

Two Sunday Morning Services, Two Distinct Settings

Sunday worship at Bluff Park takes two very different forms, and many members move between them or call one home. At 8:45 in the morning, the Traditional Worship service fills the Sanctuary. The Sanctuary Choir and the church's historic pipe organ lead the singing of hymns and sacred choral music, and the liturgy draws on the long Methodist pattern of prayer, scripture, creed, and sermon. The stained-glass windows and the Rose window cast colored light across the room, and the dress is typically semi-formal, though worshipers are invited to wear whatever makes them comfortable.

At 10:45 in the morning, The Gathering fills the historic Chapel, the building with the steeple in the middle of campus. The Gathering is a modern, intimate service led by the Gathering Band, which often plays contemporary songs alongside classic hymns and occasionally brings in a bluegrass band. Coffee and fellowship precede the service, and Holy Communion is celebrated every Sunday. The chapel has a warm, peaceful feel, and the service is designed to be a place where newcomers, singles, young families, and longtime members can all come as they are.

Both services are livestreamed. The Traditional service goes out at 8:45 a.m. and The Gathering at 10:45 a.m., with replays available on the church's YouTube channel and Facebook page. A Welcome Desk near each worship space is staffed by friendly volunteers in green lanyards who are ready to answer questions, hand out information, and help first-time guests find their way.

Children from the Nursery Through Fifth Grade

Bluff Park UMC takes its work with children seriously and calls this commitment its Child Protection First Policy. Every paid and volunteer staff member who works with children or youth undergoes a background check and child safety training as part of the church's Safe Sanctuary Policy.

On Sunday mornings, the Nursery is open from 8:30 a.m. until after the last service ends at 11:45, welcoming children from six weeks old through four-year-old Kindergarten. Parents are encouraged to label bottles, sippy cups, and other personal items, and to sign children in so the staff has allergy and contact information on hand. Preschool Sunday School meets from 9:45 to 10:35 with Ms. Marcie leading the two-year-olds through four-year-olds, and Elementary Sunday School runs at the same time with Mr. Stanley leading kindergarten through fifth grade. Children attending Children's Church leave the Sanctuary about fifteen minutes into either worship service, gather in Hudson Hall for a short age-appropriate service of prayer, offering, and a children's sermon, and return to their families at the end of the service. Children's Church does not meet on the first Sunday of the month.

Midweek Meetup takes over on Wednesday nights during the school year, running from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The evening includes a dinner, choir practice, grade-level Bible study, and recreation, and once a month a Wild Wednesday theme night replaces the regular program with a special event. Vacation Bible School runs for one week each July from 8:30 a.m. to noon and is open to rising four-year-old Kindergarten through fifth grade. Because proceeds from Bargains on the Bluff cover the cost, VBS is free for every child, both from the church and from the wider community.

Students Rooted in Faith, Growing in Grace

BPUMC Students is the church's ministry for middle schoolers and high schoolers. The Student Ministry gathers in the Connect Room on the first floor for Sunday School at 9:45 a.m., with breakfast, conversation, and prayer for one another. Open Gym opens at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoons for a pickup game and casual time together, and from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday nights the group meets for dinner, games, mission projects, and fellowship, with dinner always free.

Holy Ground Worship is the student ministry's weekly worship service on Wednesday nights during the school year, running from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The evening includes dinner, games, prayer, and Bible study and is open to any middle or high schooler. The student ministry also organizes an annual Fall Retreat at Camp Cosby each November with climbing, a giant swing, group games, gaga ball, a covered basketball court, and a talent show.

Room 35226+ is the student ministry's community response to unmet needs in Hoover and Birmingham schools. Resource rooms stocked with school supplies, toiletries, and food have been established at Simmons Middle School, at Dupuy Birmingham City School, and at Bluff Park's own Little Imaginations preschool. Students can walk in and get what they need during the school day, and the church is working to expand to additional schools in the 35226 zip code.

Common Tables, Sunday School, and Bible Studies for Adults

Adult ministry at Bluff Park is built around the conviction that growth happens best in community. Common Tables are the centerpiece. Each Wednesday evening from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m., groups of eight to twelve adults gather in a member's home to share a meal, work through scripture together, share what is happening in their lives, and pray for one another. Tables are open to adults of all ages and stages, and newcomers can join at any point in the year. Just as the early Methodists built faith in small bands, Common Tables are meant to make the whole congregation feel like a family.

Sunday School classes meet between the two worship services, with most classes gathering around 9:45 a.m. The class lineup includes The Lord's Supper (a community of thirty- to forty-somethings), Faith Builders (younger couples active in missions), Cornerstone (singles, marrieds, and those navigating separation or divorce), Seekers (couples and singles in their sixties and seventies), Faith (ages fifty and up), New Vision (smaller group ages fifty and up), Covenant (sixties and seventies, lecture style), Friendship (ages sixty and up with monthly fellowship meals), Wesley Fishermen (ages sixty-five and up, mission active), and Canterbury (ages sixty and up, with a love of old hymns and gospel songs).

Weekly Bible studies round out the week. The Men's Tuesday Bible Study gathers at 6:30 a.m. for a discussion of scripture. The Pastor's Bible Study meets Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. in the Seekers classroom. A study on the problem of evil and the question of where God is in suffering meets Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. in the Library. The Prayer Team meets Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. for open prayer for the church and the world, and the Thursday Morning Quilters meet at 9:30 to piece, quilt, and bind comfort quilts that go to First Light, a women's and children's shelter in downtown Birmingham, with about five quilts delivered each month.

A Music Ministry for Every Voice

Music holds a central place at Bluff Park UMC. The Sanctuary Choir is a non-auditioned ensemble of singers of all musical abilities and walks of life who rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., August through June, and lead worship at the 8:45 service each Sunday. The choir sings with the church's historic pipe organ and piano, often works with professional instrumentalists, and presents special programs throughout the church year. Visitors are welcome to drop in on a Wednesday rehearsal in the Choir Room behind the Sanctuary.

The Gathering Band, led by Davis Haines, leads contemporary worship at 10:45 in the Chapel with a blend of modern and historic songs. A Men's Choir and a Women's Choir sing for special occasions. The Adult Handbell Choir, a three- to five-octave ensemble of senior high youth and adults, rings for special services September through May. Children's choirs begin in the preschool years with the Preschool Choir and continue with the Elementary Choir, which rehearses as part of Midweek Meetup. Whether a person wants to sing, ring, or simply listen, music shapes the rhythm of life at Bluff Park.

Pantry on the Bluff and Bundles of Hope

Pantry on the Bluff is one of the most visible ministries of Bluff Park UMC. It began in January 2009 when the United Women in Faith of Bluff Park took on full responsibility for what had been a small food closet maintained by the church's Director of Senior Services. As the economy in Jefferson County declined, more and more families knocked on the church doors, and the ministry grew into a structured, ongoing food program. In 2015, recognizing that disposable diapers are not covered by SNAP or WIC and can cost more than a hundred dollars a month per baby, Bluff Park partnered with Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank to begin distributing diapers alongside groceries.

Today, Pantry on the Bluff distributes food and diapers on the first Wednesday of each month from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The drive-through ministry is based at the South covered entrance at 733 Valley Street, and groceries are also delivered each month to about twenty-nine residents at the AHEPA 3 senior living center in Hoover. The pantry now serves more than two hundred families each month. Volunteers pack bags on the Sunday before distribution, restock when the monthly food order arrives on the third Thursday, and hand out groceries on the morning itself. The church also takes part in Rise Against Hunger meal-packaging events to address hunger beyond Hoover.

Under the Bridge and First Light

Other community outreach efforts extend further into Birmingham. Under the Bridge is a ministry that provides a hot meal for homeless men and women in downtown Birmingham on the second and third Tuesday evenings of each month. Team members prepare the meal in the Bluff Park kitchen and then transport and serve it at the Church of the Reconciler, a United Methodist mission church supported by the North Alabama Conference and partner congregations.

First Light Women's Shelter also receives regular support. Bluff Park volunteers take turns preparing and serving supper at the shelter, and the Thursday Morning Quilters deliver about five comfort quilts each month. Beyond that, the church participates in the Appalachia Service Project each year, sending rising ninth through twelfth graders on a week-long mission trip to help make homes in Appalachia warm, safe, and dry.

Helping Hand and Room 35226+

Helping Hand is the church's short-term, one-time service ministry, designed to match people who have a little time to spare with people who have modest needs. Volunteers sign up for whatever they are good at, and the ministry connects them with tasks that fit into busy schedules. The goal is to help both the server and the one being served draw closer to Christ through acts of service.

Room 35226+, mentioned above, is a parallel outreach aimed at school-aged children. It began at Simmons Middle School and has expanded to Dupuy Birmingham City School and to Bluff Park's own preschool. Donated school supplies, toiletries, and food are available to students through the school's guidance counselors, and the ministry continues to grow toward the vision of a resource room in every school in the 35226 zip code.

Emergency assistance is also available through the Bluff Park UMC office for needs such as utility bills and emergency food. Counseling is offered through a partnership with United Counseling, which provides marriage, family, group, and individual counseling for issues ranging from anxiety to grief.

Bluff Park Preschool: Little Imaginations

Little Imaginations, the Bluff Park Preschool located inside the church building, offers a half-day preschool program for infants from six months of age (as of September 1) through four-year-old Kindergarten. The preschool welcomes children of all backgrounds and faiths and prepares each student for kindergarten in heart, mind, body, and spirit. Through teacher-student relationships and a curriculum that emphasizes play, socialization, and age-appropriate learning, the program aims to give every child a strong foundation in both academic and social skills. The small setting creates a real sense of community in which children and parents interact with the teachers and administration each day.

United Women in Faith

The United Women in Faith (formerly United Methodist Women) circle at Bluff Park UMC has been a mainstay of the congregation for generations. Meetings are typically held in the Fireside Room at 10:00 a.m. on the fourth Monday of each month. The local circle participates in the Conference Mission u and Annual Meeting at Camp Sumatanga, hosts the Bargains on the Bluff bake sale, hears mission speakers from across the connection, and supports a wide range of mission projects locally and globally. The group connects and nurtures women through Christian spiritual formation, leadership development, creative fellowship, and education so that they can inspire, influence, and impact local and global communities.

Bargains on the Bluff

For more than twenty years, Bargains on the Bluff has been Bluff Park UMC's semi-annual Mommy and Me Consignment Sale. Held in the fall and spring, the sale features children's and maternity clothing, baby gear, toys, and a popular ladies shop, and has now expanded to accept gently used play clothes with small imperfections. Half of the proceeds fund Vacation Bible School, keeping it free for the wider community, and the other half supports Bluff Park Preschool. Volunteers do not need to be members of the church to help, and the sale's point-based volunteer system rewards workers with earlier shopping access at the Preview Sale.

Christmas and Easter at Bluff Park

The church year at Bluff Park UMC follows the rhythms of the Christian calendar. In Advent, the church hosts a Family Advent Wreath Workshop with dinner, a wreath, and a family devotional book. Lessons and Carols fills the Sanctuary on the first Sunday of December, and the Children's Christmas Pageant brings the nativity story to life in a service the whole congregation is invited to attend. Christmas Eve brings a 2:30 p.m. Gathering service in the Chapel and candlelight services at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The Festival of Three Kings collects gifts for children in need, and the White Christmas Offering supports Embrace Alabama Kids (formerly the United Methodist Children's Home).

In Lent, the church collects an Easter Love Offering to support ministries such as the Church of the Reconciler, Fairhaven's Fountain of Love, McCoy Adult Day Care, and Urban Ministry. Palm Sunday is celebrated with waving palm branches at both services, and Maundy Thursday and Good Friday Tenebrae services fill the Sanctuary at 6:30 p.m. on successive evenings. The annual Children's Community Easter Egg Hunt brings ten thousand eggs, pictures with the Easter Bunny, door prizes, and special prize eggs to the campus grounds, and Easter Sunday worship is offered in both traditional and contemporary forms.

Joining the Family

Becoming a member of Bluff Park UMC is a simple step of getting in touch with the pastoral staff, who walk new members through what it means to join a United Methodist congregation. Newcomers who want to explore faith at their own pace are invited to reach out to a pastor through the Next Steps form on the livestream page, to visit Common Tables, to drop in on a Sunday School class, or simply to come worship in either the Sanctuary or the Chapel on a Sunday morning. Children and students have their own clear paths into the life of the church, and adults of any age or stage can find a place to belong, grow, and serve in this congregation that has been rooted on Shades Mountain since 1908.
