Over a Century on Jensen Drive: New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Northeast Houston

Baptist Church in Houston, Texas

New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church is a Missionary Baptist congregation in Northeast Houston that has been building families in Christ for more than a century, with Sunday worship, weekly Bible study, a wide slate of ministries, and the community-development work of the Houston Northeast Community Development Corporation.

About Bethlehem Baptist Church

For more than a century, New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church has been a steady witness on the northeast side of Houston. From a small body of believers organized in 1920 to the multi-generational congregation it is today, the church family has held tightly to a single calling: to glorify God by fostering a community of faith, hope, and love, equipping believers to grow in His Word, serve others with compassion, and share the transformative power of Christ with the world.

The church's home, 9126 Jensen Drive, opens its doors every Sunday morning at 9:00 AM for worship. Returning members, new neighbors, and friends from across the city find a warm seat in the sanctuary as the choir takes its place, communion is prepared on the first Sunday of the month, and Pastor David L. Smith steps into the pulpit to preach the Gospel he has carried for more than forty years.

Over a Century Walking by Faith

New Bethlehem's story begins in 1920, when the Reverend Monroe Lewis Fifer gathered a small group of believers and organized what was then known as Bethlehem Baptist Church. He and his wife Daisey shepherded the work from 1920 until Pastor Fifer's death in 1965. After two years under Reverend H.L. Goode, the Reverend Raphael Spiller assumed the pastorate in 1967 and led the congregation for eighteen years, teaching the family to trust in the Lord and not lean to its own understanding.

The church's history includes seasons of difficulty alongside seasons of growth. Under Reverend L.D. Spiller, who became the fourth pastor in 1986, the original West End building at 1601 Bonner at Spencer Street was lost to fire. Through great faith, the pastor and the members relocated in September 1987 to the Jensen Drive sanctuary the church still calls home, and at that point the congregation adopted the name New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church.

On April 26, 1992, a young, Spirit-filled Houston preacher named David L. Smith preached his first sermon as pastor, and the church has walked by faith and not by sight ever since. The New Bethlehem family remembers Sis. Elenora Peavy, one of the last remaining members from the Fifer era, who rested in the Lord on December 31, 2008 at the age of ninety-six. More than a century after its founding, New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church continues to develop and prepare the people of God for the coming of Christ.

A Pastor with a Kingdom Vision

Pastor David L. Smith has faithfully led New Bethlehem MBC for more than three decades. A Houston native, he attended the College of Biblical Studies and later graduated from Southern Reformed College and Seminary. He has been preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ for more than forty years, and his ministry is anchored in the conviction that there is one God, one faith, and one baptism, and that every believer can experience the abundant life that comes through Jesus Christ.

Smith is known for teaching Scripture in a way that is at once practical and rooted in the text, helping men and women apply biblical principles to everyday life. His passion extends well beyond the pulpit. He describes the work in two parts: "God is doing two things in the world: He is saving souls and maturing saints. Through discipleship development, you are able to become faithful, available, and teachable in all areas of your life." Among his recognitions for community service is his founding of the Houston Northeast Community Development Corporation (HNECDC), where he serves as president and works alongside community partners to promote health and wellness, education, economic empowerment, and neighborhood revitalization throughout Northeast Houston.

Married for thirty-nine years, Pastor Smith and Lady Linda have raised three daughters and now delight in four grandchildren. Together they welcome every newcomer to the New Bethlehem family with the same words they have used for decades: come in, sit down, and discover the work God has for your life.

Lady Linda Smith and the Women of the Church

Lady Linda Smith, a native of Smithfield, Virginia, has stood beside her husband for more than thirty-nine years of ministry. She surrendered her life to Christ early in life and has built a ministry around teaching, counseling, and walking with women through the everyday application of the Bible. She has guided women through prayer, confession, repentance, renewing the mind, and managing time and finances through a biblical lens, all rooted in her conviction that the scriptures "are without error and are the supreme standard by which all mankind should conduct their walk of life." Lady Smith holds that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are identical in nature, equal in power and glory, and share the same attributes and perfection.

Lady Smith is supported in this work by Deaconess Shirley Peavy and the Women's Ministry, which promotes fellowship, unity, and Godliness among the women and young ladies of the church through biblical teaching designed to help them live productive, faithful lifestyles.

Sunday Morning in the Sanctuary

The church's weekly rhythm centers on Sunday morning worship at 9:00 AM. Communion is observed on the first Sunday of each month, and immediately after the morning service on those first Sundays the congregation gathers for Life Enrichment, a time of fellowship, teaching, and connection for the whole family.

Music is a defining feature of the New Bethlehem worship experience. Calvin Brantley, the Music Ministry Director, coordinates a rotating schedule so that a different ensemble takes the stand each week of the month: the Praise Team on the first Sunday, the Mass Choir on the second, the Youth Choir on the third, the Male Chorus on the fourth, and the Women Choir on the fifth Sunday when the calendar allows. The music ministry's purpose is to create an atmosphere for praise and worship through songs that are consistent with Bible doctrine.

Beyond Sunday, the congregation gathers for Wednesday Bible study, a midweek pause for digging into the Word together. Visitors can expect a warm welcome from the Usher and Greeter Ministry, the deacons serving on duty, and members ready to help first-time guests find their place.

On the Air with Envision Radio

For neighbors who can't make it to Jensen Drive, New Bethlehem's pulpit travels by radio every week. Pastor David Smith broadcasts live on Envision Radio at 8:30 AM CST every Sunday morning, and on Tuesday mornings at 9:00 AM CST both Pastor Smith and Lady Linda Smith share the airwaves together. The Tuesday broadcast offers listeners an additional window into the church's teaching, conversation, and pastoral counsel.

For those who prefer to worship online, Sunday morning at 9:00 AM CST is livestreamed on Facebook, and recordings of worship services and sermons are shared on the church's YouTube channel, so family and friends across the country can join in real time or catch up later in the week.

Ministries for Every Stage of Life

New Bethlehem MBC's ministries are organized around the seasons of life and the gifts of the body. Each one is grounded in the conviction that there are different kinds of service, but the same Lord, and that each believer is given a gift for the common good.

The Men's Ministry unites the young boys and men of the church around fellowship, unity, and Godliness through Bible lessons on biblical doctrine. The Marriage Ministry helps couples learn to enjoy the kind of marriage God has designed. The Singles Ministry encourages unmarried believers to live a productive Christian life rooted in Scripture and to share fellowship with one another. The Baptismal Ministry walks new converts through the meaning of baptism according to Matthew 28:19-20, teaching them who God is, what the Fall means, what the Bible says about baptism, and what God expects of a new Christian.

The Youth Ministry empowers young people to come to know God for themselves. For children it teaches who God is, how to walk with Him, how to relate to one another, and how to share their faith. For older teens the ministry adds practical life preparation: selecting a college, navigating financial assistance, SAT preparation, and job-readiness skills such as interviewing, completing applications, and dressing for success. The ministry also sponsors outings such as movie nights, talent shows, sports events, musical events, and trips to amusement parks. The Music Ministry, the Kitchen Ministry, the Media Ministry, and the Usher and Greeter Ministry round out the work that happens behind the scenes, keeping services running smoothly and members well cared for.

Building Up Northeast Houston

Reaching beyond the church walls has been a hallmark of New Bethlehem from the days of its earliest pastors, and it remains central under Pastor Smith's leadership. Through the Houston Northeast Community Development Corporation, the church partners with other organizations to address the well-being of the whole person - spirit, body, family, and neighborhood - across Northeast Houston.

The church regularly hosts community-focused events on its Jensen Drive campus, including a Mobile Health day with free screenings and information, a Senior Healthy Eating and Cooking Class, and a Community Clean Up that takes members and neighbors into the surrounding blocks. Each fall the church joins other area congregations for the Jensen Jubilee at Shady Lane Park, a day of fellowship and outreach that draws families from across the 77093 community. Other annual touchpoints include Black Heritage Sunday, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Grandparents Day, and Family and Friends Day, all of which bring the church family and its neighbors together around the table.

A Church Family That Keeps Moving Forward

Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM on Jensen Drive remain the heartbeat of New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. The Praise Team, Mass Choir, Youth Choir, Male Chorus, and Women Choir take their appointed places, the deacons prepare the communion table on the first Sunday, Life Enrichment gathers the family for fellowship afterward, and Pastor David L. Smith steps into the pulpit to declare Mark 16:15 - "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" - just as the pastors before him did for more than a hundred years. The deacons, ministers, music directors, and ministry leaders serve in their stations, the kitchen and media teams prepare for the week ahead, and the doors of the sanctuary stay open to every neighbor who walks in looking for a family of faith, hope, and love.
