A Light House on St. Emanuel Street
Houston Berean Seventh-day Adventist Church stands at 2119 St. Emanuel Street in Houston's Third Ward, just minutes from downtown Houston and within easy reach of I-59, I-45, and I-10. The congregation has been gathering in the heart of the city for over a century, with members marking 105 years of ministry in September 2026. The building has also been designated as a Resiliency Hub, ready to provide resources to the surrounding community in the event of a natural disaster.
The church's tagline says it plainly: "Sharing the Love of God in the Heart of the City!" Inside the doors, Pastor Gilbert Williams and a team of elders, ministry leaders, and volunteers extend that calling through Bible study, worship, prayer, youth work, family support, and a community food pantry that serves neighbors across the surrounding zip codes. The church belongs to the worldwide Seventh-day Adventist Church, a mainstream Protestant denomination of roughly 19 million members, including more than one million across North America.
Gathered on the Seventh Day
Like other Seventh-day Adventist congregations, Houston Berean observes the Sabbath from Saturday morning through Saturday evening. Two gatherings anchor the day.
Sabbath School begins at 9:30 a.m. and runs until 10:40 a.m. The Sabbath School Lesson Quarterly is the church's study guide, with the current quarter titled "Growing in a Relationship with God." Classes are arranged by age, from Beginners (birth through age 2) and Kindergarten (ages 3 to 4) through Primary (ages 5 to 9), Junior PowerPoints (ages 10 to 14), Real Time Faith (ages 13 to 14), Cornerstone Connections (ages 15 to 18), and a Young Adult collegiate track. Adults gather for a single lesson study, with materials also available online through Gracelink, Hope Channel, and the Sabbath School Podcast.
The Worship Service follows at 11:00 a.m. and continues until 1:00 p.m. Members and visitors gather for prayer, praise, and fellowship, with a livestream broadcast on YouTube and Facebook Live under the handle @Houstonberean for those who cannot attend in person. The pastor and guest preachers deliver what the church calls "a dynamic word from the Lord," with congregational song, prayer, and an engaging message at the heart of the hour.
Wednesday Evenings and a Sunday Prayer Call
Beyond the Sabbath, the church keeps a steady midweek rhythm. Wednesday Bible Study and Prayer meets at 7:00 p.m. and runs for an hour. On the fourth Wednesday of each month, the evening takes on a youth focus as Youth Impact Night, an interactive service designed for teens that includes Bible trivia with cash prizes and a time of prayer for families.
On Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m., the Prayer Ministry hosts a one-hour Prayer Call over Zoom. The group prays specifically for the needs of the church family and welcomes anyone who would like to join. Prayer requests can also be submitted through the church at any time, with categories ranging from comfort and healing to finances, forgiveness, wisdom, and guidance.
Pastor Williams and the Leadership Team
Pastor Gilbert Williams leads Houston Berean alongside his wife Gwendolyn. His welcome letter to the congregation carries the phrase "Grow, Go and Glow With Us!" and emphasizes a desire to see each member and visitor "come into a personal relationship with Jesus." The pastor's letters describe Berean as "a lighthouse in the Third Ward for over 80 years" and a presence that has been "ministering God's word for over 100 years in Houston."
The Elder Board includes First Elder Michael Windham, Elder David Ssebulime, Elder Sophia Cheruiyot, and Elder James Kelley. Elder Ssebulime also leads free music lessons in guitar and piano for children and adults on the second and fourth Sabbaths of each month (currently on hold until further notice). Ministry directors round out the team, with Linda Walker serving as Community Services Director, Flona Francis (D.C.) and Sara Guzman-Reyes (M.D.) leading Health Ministries, Shatoya Kelley directing Children's Ministries, Ericka Stevenson and Elder James Kelley co-leading the Teen Small Group, and Kahla Durand leading the Adventist Youth Society.
Children's Ministries
Berean's Children's Ministries serve children from birth through age 13 with the goal of helping each child "develop a loving relationship with Christ and one another." Children's Church takes place every Sabbath morning, except on Sabbaths when Communion is scheduled, and children participate in the full service under the guidance of adult volunteers.
The Children's Ministry Information Form allows parents to register children for Children's Church, Vacation Bible School, Children's Revival Programming, or other offerings, and includes sections for allergies, medical needs, and any special considerations. Two specialized clubs round out the children's programming. The Adventurer Club supports parents and caregivers in leading younger children in a "growing, joyful love relationship with Jesus Christ," while the Pathfinder Club is a worldwide co-ed scouting-style program for juniors and teens in grades 5 through 10, open to youth of any faith or none at all.
Youth Ministries
The Youth Ministries department describes itself as designed for ages 12 to 19. The Berean Teen Small Group, led by Ericka Stevenson and Elder James Kelley, meets on the second and fourth Sabbath mornings during the 11:00 service. The group formed during the COVID-19 quarantine and has continued gathering ever since, checking in on the unique challenges and victories of being a young Seventh-day Adventist Christian.
The Adventist Youth Society, led by Kahla Durand, meets on second and fourth Sabbath afternoons for engaging Bible study and programming that connects with Pathfinder, Master Guide, and Adventist Christian Fellowship leaders. The Leaders In Training (L.I.T.) Mentorship Program pairs youth with adult mentors in their prospective career fields for academic and professional guidance. The Youth Impact Night midweek service rounds out the calendar with a teens-only gathering on the fourth Wednesday of each month, complete with Bible trivia and cash prizes.
Sabbath School: The Church at Study Time
The Sabbath School department at Houston Berean is described as "the church at study time," with the primary mission of teaching and proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ. Materials are produced by the worldwide Seventh-day Adventist Church, and the church recommends several online resources including the Adult Bible Study Guide, Gracelink for children, Junior PowerPoints, Real Time Faith, Cornerstone Connections, and Inverse Bible Study for young adults. Sabbath School podcasts and video lessons are available through Hope Channel, Amazing Facts, and Sabbath School University.
Community Service: ACS at Work
The Berean Adventist Community Service (ACS) is the congregation's outreach arm to the surrounding Third Ward neighborhood. Its purpose is to meet people's immediate needs through supplemental groceries, mentoring, tutoring, referrals, health screenings, disaster response, and inner-city ministries, building a trusting relationship between the church and its community.
The ACS Food Pantry is open to the community as a resource to supplement or provide temporary relief for individuals and families in need, with a primary service area of zip codes 77003 and 77004 plus registered church members and referrals. Food bags and boxes are prepared based on weekly donations, with the Houston Food Bank as the major partnership. Service days are currently Wednesday and Saturday on a pilot basis. All recipients must register by completing a Client Application.
The ACS Clothes Closet accepts new and gently used clothing and distributes by appointment or during major distribution days. Other ACS offerings include the Homework Buddy tutoring program, Single Parent Mentoring, Career and Resume Coaching, Community Outreach Events, Community Fellowship Lunches, Prayer and Bible Study Connection, First Aid and Health and Wellness Events, and Youth Activities and Referrals. The current ACS needs list includes deodorant, socks, underwear, bras, shoes, HISD school uniforms, household items like laundry detergent and toilet paper, non-perishable pantry staples, diapers, hair care products, and reusable grocery bags. Monetary donations are accepted online through the church's giving page.
Health Ministries
Health Ministries promotes "healthful living, mentally, physically, and spiritually" through preventive care education and lifestyle resources. The team is led by Flona Francis, D.C., and Sara Guzman-Reyes, M.D., and offers devotional series on staying young and articles on topics ranging from the effects of noise on hearing to natural skin care. The Health Ministries team also maintains a directory of local community health clinics, including Casa El Buen Samaritano, San Jose Clinic, Shalom Mobile Health Ministry, Christ Clinic in Katy, Tomagwa Ministries Medical Clinic, and several others throughout the greater Houston area.
Family, Women, Men, and Seniors
The Family Ministries department provides resources, training events, and networking opportunities for members and the community. Its "Family First Devotionals" cover everyday topics like laundry, family worship times, and budget vacations, while the "Building Bridges of Hope Series" includes studies on Christian hospitality, friendship evangelism, and Adventist lifestyles.
Women's Ministries helps women of the church "experience Jesus Christ in a personal, life-changing relationship" and serves both the congregation and surrounding community through support groups and ministry opportunities. Men's Ministries focuses on "men connecting with men in their church and community." Seniors' Ministries empowers and uplifts members age 50 and up, aligning with the pastor's evangelistic vision for the church, the local community, and the global community.
Communication and Newsletter
The Communication department oversees news and information, public relations, crisis communication, media production, and online services. The department publishes the Berean Family Connection Newsletter, a bimonthly publication now in its twentieth edition, with archived issues stretching back to 2023. The newsletter keeps members informed about church life, ministry updates, and community news.
What We Believe
Houston Berean is part of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a mainstream Protestant denomination with approximately 19 million members worldwide and more than one million members in North America. The denomination operates 173 hospitals and sanitariums and more than 7,500 schools globally, with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) working in more than 130 countries.
Adventists believe in a Trinity of three persons - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit - who make up one God. Salvation was made possible when Jesus, the Son, came to earth as a baby in Bethlehem, lived a sinless life in accordance with the Father's will, was crucified for the sins of the world, and rose again on the third day. After returning to heaven, Jesus left the Holy Spirit as Comforter and Counselor and promised to return a second time to complete His plan of salvation. Adventists look forward to that day.
The church's mission is summarized in the phrase "Believers Enjoying Redemption Evangelizing Anyone Now," or BE RE AN. Its core values are Worship, Stewardship, Relationship, and Discipleship. Members are encouraged to grow in faith through prayer, Bible study, song, fellowship, and small groups, with the church's vision to "grow in grace as we share God's love, one neighbor, one friend, one relative at a time, until God's character is reproduced in us and everyone we meet."
A Century and Counting
From its location near downtown Houston, Houston Berean continues to mark the rhythms of Adventist life. Sabbath School opens the door at 9:30 in the morning, worship fills the sanctuary from eleven until one, the prayer line gathers on Sunday evenings, and midweek Bible study draws the family back together on Wednesdays. Around those anchor points, children's classes, teen small groups, Pathfinders, Adventurers, ACS food distributions, and a steady calendar of devotionals and fellowship meals keep the community in motion.
