A Hilltop Sanctuary on Thunderbird Drive
Aptos United Methodist Church sits on the hilltop of Thunderbird Drive in Aptos, California, with a motto that captures its spirit: "With a Welcome as Wide as the Sea." The congregation gathers each Sunday morning in the Sanctuary for a 10:00 AM classic worship service, and services are livestreamed on YouTube for those who cannot attend in person. Coffee and fellowship follow at 11:00 AM, making the morning a full hour of music, prayer, and conversation. A staffed nursery is available for infants during worship, and younger children are invited to step out to Sunday School shortly after Children's Time.
From Valencia Hall to the Hilltop
The congregation's roots reach back to the early 1940s, when a handful of Aptos neighbors began organizing a Sunday School in Valencia Hall, the village's meeting place. At the same time, Mary Elizabeth Brown, a Methodist deaconess and widow known to the community as "Grandma Brown," was holding an afternoon Sunday school of her own. The two efforts merged, and on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1944, the first Methodist Church of Aptos was officially consecrated with retired Methodist minister Frank Farr as its first pastor. Grandma Brown eventually deeded her property to Monte Toyon, which deeded it back to the church.
By 1948 the "Brown Hall" congregation had outgrown its space, and founding member Gertrude Miller captained a fund drive for a new building. Three years later, members chose a lot next door belonging to fellow member Elta Andrews, and much of the construction was carried out by the people in the pews. The church and parsonage were finished, the years passed, and by the mid-1960s the building was once again too small. The first service in the present Sanctuary was held on January 28, 1968. The week leading up to that day had been so rainy that a lake of water stood in front of the building, and a visiting bishop's lengthy sermon ended abruptly when a car rolled out of the parking lot and slid down the bank into the water. The church, members like to say, was baptized with more than a little water that day.
Sunday Worship and Music
The Sunday morning service is intentionally grounded yet lively. Sermons aim to be applicable to real life, and a wide variety of music fills the Sanctuary, drawing on the traditional Cambiare choir, the contemporary SoulFire Praise Band, and the bell-ringing ministry of the Bells of Joy. Holy Communion is shared at the 10:00 service on the first Sunday of each month.
Visitors who arrive unsure of their place in a church setting are met with explicit reassurance. "The Methodist tradition has always been an 'open tent' tradition," the church explains, pointing to John Wesley's eighteenth-century vision of a movement that welcomes all who seek God's grace. Members add that no one needs to have arrived at faith to belong: "We are all at different stages in our journey in faith. We are not offended by different beliefs and mindsets." Anyone curious about the Christian faith is invited to reach out to Pastor Gabe House.
Children, Youth, and the After-School Program
Children's and youth ministries are a point of pride at Aptos UMC. Children's bulletins for ages three and up are prepared each week to help younger worshipers follow along, and a staffed nursery welcomes infants during the 10:00 service. After Children's Time in the service, children are invited to Sunday School. The church also hosts a wonderful after-school program on its campus and welcomes several non-profit children's organizations into its facilities, extending its ministry to young people well beyond Sunday morning.
Music for Every Ear
Music is woven through every layer of congregational life. Singers can join the Cambiare choir, which offers anthems during the classic service. Instrumentalists and vocalists are invited into the SoulFire band, and bell ringers - beginners included - can join the Bells of Joy, an ecumenical handbell choir that contributes to worship several times a year.
Small Groups and Connection
More than thirty groups meet across the life of the church. Small groups gather weekly to discuss scripture, current events, and ordinary life. Other regular gatherings include a monthly Saturday morning United Methodist Men breakfast with guest speakers, a book club that meets on the third Wednesday of each month, and a gardening group that tends the church grounds on Thursday mornings. Leadership teams - from finance to building maintenance - offer further ways to serve, and opportunities range from worship flowers and greeters to communion leaders and Sunday School teachers.
Mission and Outreach in Santa Cruz County
Mission work extends into the surrounding community in concrete ways. On the third Tuesday of each month, members prepare and serve dinner at St John's Church in Aptos for homeless neighbors in Santa Cruz County. Several times a year the congregation gathers at Second Harvest Food Bank to package hundreds of bags of grocery staples. The Families in Transition (FIT) ministry collects and distributes groceries to families moving out of homelessness into permanent housing. All-church mission dinners collect targeted items throughout the year, including Sock Night, Hygiene Kit Night, and Blanket Night. The Right Start BackPack Project fills new backpacks with school supplies for county children who lack basic necessities, and ongoing support goes to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) for disaster recovery around the world.
An Open and Reconciling Welcome
Aptos UMC is an inclusive community that welcomes and encourages full participation regardless of race, culture, age, economic circumstance, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical and mental abilities. The congregation intentionally welcomes LGBTQI people into the full life of the church and affirms the United Methodist motto, "Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors." Worship services, small group gatherings, mission projects, and social events are all described as open to anyone who walks through the door.
Weddings, Memorials, and a Building Shared
The Sanctuary and grounds are also available for weddings and memorials. All couples are welcome to celebrate their wedding at AUMC, and the pastor is available to meet with families to plan memorial services. The church hosts many community groups and non-profit organizations as well, sharing its space with neighbors beyond its own members.
